Man green is a huge dude
So is De'Veon Smith. I have a feeling he is not going to redshirt this year.
Smith looks pretty big, even standing next to Green.
I see we're still pre-Madonnas when it comes to grammar.
Mine as well say something about it.
for all intensive purposes.
We have to represent are university well.
Can't take the UM education for granite.
He should of thought about it before he posted.
Irregardlessly, I could really care less.
Really, after everything else in this thread? Still? Wow.
That was mind bottling.
Hold your tounge.
I'm not going to correct you because this made me LOL!!!
And I kinda think you did it on purpose...
I can't tell whether it is good or bad weight, but in all honesty, who cares? If it's bad weight, he is going to have pay for it in either extra conditioning or playing time. The level of obsession about a 18 year old kid's playing weight is absolutely ridiculous.
Its bad and the reason are claiming a minor injury. So gecan work it off prior to contact.
WTF are you saying???
It won't hurt to put a bit of effort in before throwing your hands up.
At the It's Bad and the Reason concert he found out that Minor is injured, and they fired Wellman. I'm sure we'll be seeing an interview with Gecan any hour now.
I'm sure this is good, because if there is one thing I know it is that no Michigan player has ever played with any bad weight.
I can't stop laughing at this response.
He doesn't look as lean as he did here, but that's not necessarily a bad thing and doesn't mean he still didn't add some lean mass as well. Ultimately his play will tell us if he's at a good weight or not and I'm looking forward to ending the speculation and seeing him on the field.
Is gorgeous al
Least flattering picture of the coaches ever.
mansiere(sp) or bro for some added support.
Carrying all that extra poundage is not healthy... lots of additional strain on the heart, circulatory system, and the joints.
You've got to die sometime. May be he likes his food! And what's so great eating like a rabbit so you can live an extra 10 years. I'm sure he's on statins!
I can't tell if you are serious or not, but if you are you just described the attitude that has lead to the explosion in obesity in this country, not to mention skyrocketing health care costs.
Why hasn't anyone ever told us about that?
what the heck is the guy to the right of Borges doing?
Do we know anything about his boo boo?
Green looks squishy and soft.
Now if he lost 5 lbs?... Beast-man.
His arms are bigger than my head. That dude's gonna be a load to bring down for the next few years.
There has to be some MAJOR distortion in that picture of the OL because Schofield and Lewan (the farthest back) look almost tiny when compared to Braden and, to a lesser extent, Kalis. Based on comparion using that photo, Braden would be like 6'11" and 370 lbs relative to Lewan's known measurements.
Is that a bounce house behind Green in the last pic??
They're doing it right
I'd like more pictures of the bouncy castle, please.
I sent one over to Derricks facebook for him
I really hope you're joking.
and didn't know him I wouldn't do that.
I just moved to Richmond, where is the best place to cat
married to a doctor doing residency...aka I don't have a clue where to watch it here. I'm from California(born in MI) so I don't RVA at all for UM fans. I just met Derrick through a neighbor kid once who played with him. I try to stay out of his life, he sent me a congrats private message for my son being born a few weeks before he committed in January though. never bugged him for an autograph or anything like that just so you guys don't think I'm creepy. Didn't bug him on recruiting, he knew I had a UM flag though on my house.
For taking the time to respond. Hope you are enjoying RVA.
just at a time in my life where the dvr is my way to watch sometimes. I know there is a UM bar here but I don't remember where, I will be driving up to the Minnesota game in October. also hope to see them play at Maryland whatever that year is. I'm little help though for this area, can't wait to move in 3 years honestly, not a humidity fan.
To watch the maize and blue?**
Jesus Borges. Hit a treadmill.
Looks like uncle fester ate cousin it
#4 is jacked too. He looks like a junior. All of our backs are huge...except Fitz and whoever is behind Shallman. Man, Fitz looks tiny there, and he's 200 lbs.
DeAnthony Hardison, #18.
You may or may not remember him from the spring game. He is a walk on(?) RB and got some carries. He isn't listed on the roster for some reason which I still do not understand.
A quick twitter search and I found this. He is apparently a freshman walk on. He is 5-8/164 out of Detroit East English Village (formerly Crockett).
isn't on the roster either. He has a bio (#79). Is it possible they didn't list walk-on players?
He is a mountain of a man for a freshman as well.
The photo with Dan Ferrigno is pretty amusing. I have to wonder if this is simply a way of telling people, "Look, we got this on special teams....".
Also, Derrick Green's arms are about four of mine on a per arm basis. Wow. Hopefully soon, he is running through people.
So did anyone else notice Graham Glasgow's super cheese in the OLine pic?
He was standing immeditaely next to Taylor ... so Lord only knows what was being said. It might have been all Glasgow could do to not fall over laughing at that point.
in pic #3
u can't start 6 guys lol
LTT looks like he's still a long way away from being at a desirable body composition.
Lewan's lower body looks considerablely slimmer than the rest of the O-linemen
For the posters that think Green looks good, im lost. Compared to a normal person, sure, he looks like a beast. Compared to a college RB, no......he looks fat and out of shape. Smith looks more ready to play than Green does.
P.J. Hill and Ron Dayne
There is a difference between being a overall big guy and carrying around 20 extra lbs. He was a 5 star RB at 220. 6 months later he is 240. That is not weight room, it is taco bell.
Said he was around 235 in high school, so somebody is reporting his HS weight wrong
Why can't that be weight room? This is d1....not high school. He was 280 at one point is his career. It's easy for him to gain weight and with the off season programs the coaches put them through, it would be easy for him to gain good weight.
Green was 268 lbs. as a freshman in high school.
I've never been able to determine conditioning via picture. Tell me your secret.
Hey, I hope I’m wrong, but if you have played football you know what a RB should looks like body wise. Green does not look the part right now. Tons of potential, but this extra weight could hurt his chance of having an immediate impact.
The guy reportedly has the most rididiculous workout regimes for a freshman in recent memory. So whether he weighs too much remains an open question (I think he looks fine), he can be "too big" and not have it be Taco Bell.
That's true, you could conceivably gain enough good weight to weigh too much, but it's really hard to gain that kind of muscle in a few months. It's less hard to gain it eating cake.
I've got the same body type Green has. In fact, I weigh about 25 pounds less than I did as a high school freshman--almost 20 years later. . I don't train like a college athlete, but I train hard and it's easy for me to get stronger. I gain weight when I eat junk food and stay pretty constant when I don't. It's really easy to fool yourself too, because the added calories (even bad ones) help recovery, so you feel stronger and even feel quicker for the first month or two.
He's the kind of guy who is going to struggle with weight after football. I'd be enormous if I hadn't gotten into exercise early.
I just don't think it's as easy to equate "is at a higher than ideal playing weight" with "showed up fat and out of shape." He may be more effective at 220 than 240, but that 240 doesn't look like terrible weight to me.
No doubt. You can have an insane workout regime and get stronger, more flexible, etc, while gaining bad weight. Body composition is more about diet than about training.
Wow...do some research before you speak. Everyone is all worried about a kid who is naturally big with a big frame. He had to drop weight to get to 240 for petes sake.
Green will never be a ripped looking guy because his body type won't allow it. As long as he can keep his feet and his stamina isn't a concern he will be fine.
I'd bet he played at 230 his senior year if not more and was fine. He was fine at the AA game and I'll bet he'll be fine here.
Not every RB in the world is going to be some cut up adonis when you look at them.
I have been reading this blog for years and I am not an avid poster. I read a lot of intelligent things by viewers, but I also read a lot of silly things. Your response makes no sense. At the Army All-American Game he weighed in at 220. Look a picture of him then (8 months ago) then now, big difference.
Yes, he did struggle with his weight in high school. He did not start until he lost the weight to get to 220. He never played anywhere near 240 or 230 for that matter. If you are going to bash another comment please make it intelligent
Where did you read that Green weighed in at 220 at the Army Bowl?
His bio on the website. Like I said before, I hope im wrong. I was hoping he would come in and make a difference this year. I am dissapointed with how he arrived on campus, but he has pleantly of time to get game ready. As a former football player, I was just staing my opinion on his current weight and shape. This is my last response on the topic.
Ahh yes...the always reliable guys from these AA games that would never fudge numbers to make all these kids look like supermen.
Do you also believe all skill position players run 4.3 to 4.38 40's as well?
You mean the website of the Army All-American Bowl? The one that happens to have the same measurements as Rivals? The website of the all-star game that was affiliated with Rivals?
Hmm, how strange that he weighed exactly the same at the USAAAB as he did on Rivals... We all know how people's weight stays static, and they never gain or a lose a pound, right?
That pic of Dayne was strecthed and actually made him look smaller. Here's the original image:
I dunno, looks about the same to me.
I don't think it's that people expect him to look like Adrian Peterson, but people saw pics of him in high school and he simply doesn't appear to be as lean any longer. That doesn't mean he won't lean out some, can't still be effective at his current weight, or anything in between. But, he has been leaner in the past and that is the point, albeit an overemphasized one.
Look at the legs at the waist. Hes a good ten to fifteen lbs overweight. Believe me.
You're not the one who determines good weight and bad weight, especially from two pictures. Remember the Eddie Lacy photos? Why should anyone believe you on this?
You have been watching people that are assembled the wrong way.
The ones who said he's the #1 running back in the country or the ones who said he's a top-10 running back in the country? He is not out of shape, he's been in the weight room all summer. Rivals measurements are not always accurate. If Fred Jackson said he played at 235 in high school, I believe him.
Yeah, he looks like he's carrying about 15 more pounds than he should be. He is a big, strong guy, but those 15 pounds will slow him down a lot.
Well, he's only a freshman. Barring injury, he'll get some carries. If his weight is bad for his game, he won't get the carries and lesson learned. However, I can't remember the last time I saw a college RB with a belly like that except for Dayne.
"Fat and out of shape" is a strong way to describe him. I think he could probably shed about five pounds or so, but that's the case for just about everyone. I don't think people who are five pounds overweight count as being "fat and out of shape."
So is Lewan. His arms are GIGANTIC. Kalis looks solid too.
If he doesn't drop a considerable amount of weight in the next month due to all the conditioning they're doing, then we'll know it was probably good weight.
Fat and out of shape???? Running backs come in all shapes and sizes-He was never cut up. He may need to shed 5-10lbs but he could play right now at 240 and be productive-So chill out
I agree. Eye test ill take De'veon there. Luckily for the coaches they don't decide a starting lineup from prom pics.
He looks like he came in a little soft. Hopefully its just the clothes/camera. It doesn't mean anything if he did. He could be a bettis/dayne type of build. Bowling ball. Hoke & co don't seem worried about it so I guess we probably shouldn't be either. Deveon looks effin' Jacked. So does big three-six.
Justice Hayes looks BIG! Wasn't he a runt coming out of HS?
I thought this too
He's standing closer to the photographer than anyone, and his arms are smaller than just about every other guy's in the picture.
That mean the guys standing farther away arms aren't really that big? Lol sorry couldn't resist
He was not a 5-star anywhere.
Braden is an absolute monster
Looks alot different than in his recruitment pics at 220. He looks a little chubby to me. I'm sure a year with wellman will get rid of that. Hopefully he can contribute this year. Would be a shame if touissant isn't up to par and green isn't either because of weight gain
It would be a shame if Jeremy Gallon lost a step and Amarah Darboh doesn't live up to the hype. Also it would be a shame if Taylor Lewan is looking ahead to the NFL and is afraid of getting injured and Kyle Kalis turns out to be overrated. I can play this game too. There is no indication that either of those things will happen, so it's a totally meaningless statement.
I guess what you said makes sense if I don't think about it. Thanks for sharing
He's making fun of the "would be a shame if..." sentiment.
What he said does make sense, because Green is overweight right now.
I'm not seeing what everyone else is seeing. Does Green actually look fat? I just figured it was where the photo cuts off (before his knees) and the way he's standing (looks like he's in mid-walk) and the fact that his shirt is untucked. It's not like he's pulling a BWC and his gut is poking out of his shirt.
Seriously, look at the group shot. If Green's fat, Rawls is fatter.
He looks close to 6 ft. So yes please!
The whole team looked like monsters today. I was very impressed by how big the team looks just from a year ago.
You don't need to play the position at the level the person in question does to be able to look at a guy's frame and tell if he's added body fat since last year or not. These powers come from pure observation and simply comparing how a guy looks in one set of pictures or videos to another.
I never thought Deveon had a serious shot at getting more than 11% of the carries until now. He could very well pass Green. I think they're even.
I mean hell...Lendale White played at 235 with no trouble at all, you can look at his pictures in college and claim he needed to drop a few lbs.
From what I remember he was fine as could be. People who think Borges wants to go with a one back Leveon Bell style workload are out of their mind.
Borges has said again and again that he prefers to have one running back carry the load, rather than splitting carries. We just haven't been able to do that yet. It will never be the number of carries Bell had, because we can run a balanced offense.
In Borges' six seasons at Auburn and SDSU, the primary back averaged 55% of RB carries. They never exceeded 67% (Ronnie Hillman in '2010).
LeVeon Bell tallied 89% of MSU's carries. That is all kinds of insane.
I guess his words don't necessarily match his actions then. I'd prefer to get all of our stud RB's some carries, but whatever wins games...
I think he does want a workhorse, but he wants that workhorse to get a healthy majority of the carries (60%-65%), not OMG ALL THE CARRIES. I think he mostly doesn't want a 40-40-20 split scenario.
But is slightly at odds with his past comments. On another note, I can't wait for the season to start. Getting excited.
Green wont be out of shape when the season starts. If you listen to WTKA Marcus Ray said you can lose around 10-15 pounds during camp. Green will be fine, the face that people are complaining about this is a joke. Get a life a stop worrying if someone is five pounds overweight.
To the guy who says Green looks fat and out of shape. Get your eyes checked. Seriously. You must be the supreme specimen of a human being to call what I see in those pictures "fat and out of shape."
I agree with your first sentence, but I pretty much don't believe anything that comes out of Fred Jackson's mouth.
Braden just needs to find someone to hit, Falk will find the helmet.
What a fatty! Gorgeous Borges, on the other hand...
He's like Christian Okoye and Ironhead Heyward but faster.
Kerridge is literally twice as wide as the little guy next to him. Those are some broad shoulders.
but I'm overwhelmed by the differenece in bulk between Hoke and RR squads.
We look like a Big Ten team again.
Paging Section 1, paging Section 1
I've always liked Section 1 (even if he is a conservative) but that's funny as hell. Goddammit we need posbangs. +1000 anyhow
Appearing in his All In For Michigan t-shirt from 2009 and authentic RR hat.
Okay that was kind of mean.
Is borges approaching Weiss territory? Coach hoke looks like a smashed piece of meat.
In that picture, Green reminds me of PJ Hill from Wisconsin, same body shape.
Well that would be disappointing because I would much rather have Monte ball, the guy who beat Hill for his starting position.
Except that Ball didn't beat out anyone for the starting job. Clay started and got the bulk of the carries during Ball's Freshman year but was nursing an injury the year after so Ball was the main guy for a large part of that season by default.
Except Ball did beat out two guys for the starting job who were ahead of him; James White and John Clay. I apologize for my mistake; I was getting my UW big backs confused. Hill's last season was 2008, and Ball's frosh year was 2009. But example still stands. Ball beat out B1G offensive player of the year Clay as well as B1G frosh of the year White (both 1000 yard rushers) after dropping 26 pounds from 231 to 205. The rest is history.
Good lord, some of the comments in this post......
They can't bring back the neg-bang fast enough.
Be careful what you wish for...
Le'Veon Bell while at MSU was listed as an inch or two taller and basically the same weight (237). I personally think that if Hoke could have picked one RB in the BIG that he could have had on his team it would have been Bell. That would seem to be the prototyical body type that he would love to give the ball too like 25-30-times per game. After going through 2 a days and all the conditioning Green will be around 230-235 and hopefully eating LB's and DB's!!!
Only the Michigan fan base can get the best running back recruit in the country, then worry that he is out of shape, and then argue about it. The best part is that there hasn't been a down of football played yet.
But every time I see this gif, I think it's Simon Pegg and just picture it as him
Fit & finish wise, looks like Adidas has the unis under control. Lots of M's, though.
Might have have been cooler to do a ghosted 'M' over the nameplate?
(kinda like the shoulder treatment of the mid 90's.)
Overall, still happy. I want Adidas to do well.
The "damn that guy looks a little crazy award" should go to Sione Houma.
Looks angry... like another high schooler tried to arm tackle him
A well respected strength coach once said:
The best athletes rarely outperform their peers in pre-season testing like bench pressing and squatting. Their distinguishing qualities are motor control. The ability to exert strength quickly, deactivate muscle quickly, and optimally project forces throughout the body linkage is characteristic of this skill.
But, that being said, you'd be a fool to believe that manipulating your body composition wouldn't improve your performance.
It looks like he put on a lot of upper body strength in the Gym. I see him losing 5 lbs in camp and 5 more during September. He should be around 230 by October. I don't believe he was ever 220 with that frame.
looking at our O-Linemen, Wellman will fix it / get it right. Green's a freshman, just give him time. I'm imaginingo eggs, chicken, and fish in his future, and not very many carbs.
In the meantime, if Fred and the coaches say he is good enough to play, then so be it. I know we don't play them, but my mind brings up 1st and goal from the one yard line at Illinois: now imagine that scenario with Kerridge and Green in the backfield ...
So... Green came in a little out of shape...
he looks like he's up to a solid double-D right now
Calm down, everyone.
Green's not out of shape. The top photo looks different than the group photo. His shirt's untucked in the top one and he's walking (see Tuley-Tillman behind him similarly).
In the group shot there's no indication that he's overweight.
"In the group shot there's no indication that he's overweight."
I guess I... uhhhh... disagree with that assessment.
I'm not sure how this photo didn't make the OP it is by far my favorite:
"Two Linemen and a Kicker! Coming to TBS this fall.
TBS. Very funny."
Having met Green in person, I can definitely say that he is thicker in the mid-section (unless that camera played some tricks). He was really proud of his core and how thinned out he was in the middle. Said it made him feel more balanced and fluid moving laterally.
And yes, I had a conversation with Green about his battle with weight. I told him I was very impressed with how hard he had worked and he appreciated the encouragement. We talked about his battle for about ten minutes and he lit up like a little kid at Christmas.
First, the disclaimers. Green is a great prospect and I'm elated he's here. I also think we've got about the best damn staff in the country. Most of the guys are looking awesome.
But t here's no denying Green looks heavier here than I'd like. His face is too round, his mid-section looks too thick, and there doesn't appear to be great definition in his lower body . He obviously has a lot of arm muscle, but there's some padding and hang in those. True, he is a kid and camp will do wonders. Just not crazy about how he looks out of the gate.
Bluntly, a few of the coaches could drop some weight. Mattison could use a bra. I'm concerned for their well being and it wouldn't hurt image-wise.
You mean Borges?
Wanted to see if folks read the whole post. Thanks.
