MDen selling Woodson & Howard jerseys with nameplates; first time ever
Glen Rice too: http://www.mden.com/shopping/product.cgi?TI1308+1014
Sorry, no name plate but they are using his name.
Guys, we should keep this on the DL. I don't want Howard to get suspended.
+1 Insightful
If he gets suspended that means he will be able to return.
Already have a Howard one (from Champs like 5 years ago).
But the Woodson is my dream. Dreams do come true!
Woodson is my all time favorite. I haven't bought a jersey in a long time but it looks like that is about to change....
Know if the players get a cut $ of the sales of these jerseys? They should. And glen rice should get a cut from the throw back jerseys that Tiedman and formby vintage athletic co. made. They are cool. I might get one, but I hope the players get a cut.
that we have never met?
If you're the ID, he could be the Superego? You need to find an Ego as a moderator.
I have seen your post or comments, and thought cool another Tripp fan. I don't comment that often, but I read most of the post.
cc
They're also doing a Howard road jersey.
Man those colors are dark. I thought that was an Iowa jersey.
No human should have to make a decision like that!
$160 for a screen-printed jersey? No thanks. (I know the MDen page says embroidered but those photos definitely look screenprinted). They don't appear to be a major jump in quality from the $65 "replica" jerseys.
The home jerseys look like tackle-twill to me. The road jersey posted doesn't, but it's all kind of funny anyway--back then, everything was screen-printed. Sounds like they may use authentic-style fabrics.
I'll grant that it's hard to tell with these, and MDen's online pictures are relatively hit or miss as far as such things go. I'd like to see one in person. And I'm not sure but screen print may be accurate to the era (sidenote - I have a #32 adidas practice jersey from one of the garage sales that I'm pretty sure belonged to Kovacs - no name but right era and size, and it's very similar to this - mesh front and back, screenprinted numbers, but thickly screened so the holes are mostly filled in).
In any case, these are $40 more than the customized "Premier" jerseys. Which, yeah it's Woodson/Howard, but that's steep.
and by embroidered it looks like the letters are screened onto a separate piece of fabric, which is "embroidered" onto the jersey.
Still cool as all get out.!
Yeah... You're paying $160 for a polyester t-shirt.
They've also missed one key detail on the Woodson jersey: the subtle embossed M design on each shoulder, only worn in 1995-7.
The jerseys that Howard (Russell Athletic) and Woodson (NIke) wore at Michigan were screen printed. The numbers were screened and the names were screened on name plates and the plates were sewn on. I actually liked the screened Nike jerseys better than the sewn Nike or Adidas jerseys. They were awesome.
And that's fine, but it's still a cheaper process so it's ridiculous to charge $160 for something that's similar to current "replica" jerseys.
Does anyone know when MGoBlog will unveil new shirts for this season? How about the new team shirt?
I was just looking at that on the MDen site. Question: Is the image on the front really black, like it looks in the pics, or blue, like you would expect for a Michigan garment? Black would be pretty lame. Has anyone seen them in person?
The printing is navy blue.
Hadn't seen that yet. Any idea about new MGoBlog shirts? I need moar.
In response to the Jay Bilas brouhaha, Mark Emmert has just announced that the NCAA is getting out of the business of jersey sales on its website, saying that he completely understands why that would seem hypocritical.
In the meantime, I think this is cool. And of course there can be no doubt that Howard and Woodson are getting cuts, as they should. Per Howards tweet history, it sounds like he is pondering joining the Obannon suit--no way Michigan sells named stuff of his without his consent and benefit.
but there's a Glen Rice jersey too!
edit: dammit, double post...
I've looked at the Cazzie and Rice ones in stores. The quality is TERRIBLE. They're cheap, very thin material and the numbers/names look like they'd peel off in 20 minutes. I was severely disappointed with Tiedman & Formby on them. I was ready to drop a bucket of money on the Cazzie one and walked away instead.
I'm afraid the Woodson/Desmond ones will be just as bad. The only high-quality ones that company's ever made were the old-school Ford/Kramer/Oosterban ones.
Are they Adidas?
Nike retro. so its not really the first time.
Yep, they definitely sold throwback jerseys with nameplates during the Nike years. They were expensive and short-lived, but it happened. So, OP is wrong...
No he's not.
This is the first time MDen is selling jerseys with nameplates on them. They had a policy before to not sell them "out of respect for former players".
I complained about this on here after I was denied a Tom Harmon jersey.
And what we're telling you is that MDen DID sell jerseys with nameplates in the late 90s-early 00s. Nike throwbacks. I saw them, and apparently others did, too.
What you're talking about is MDen's jersey customization service, which prohibits nameplates with current or former players' names and numbers. These jerseys aren't like those anyway, as these are throwbacks specifically mass-produced for Howard and Woodson by a third party, not just a one-off on a blank Adidas (or Nike) jersey ordered by a fan.
So, yes, MDen HAS sold jerseys with nameplates on the back. You're just probably not old enough to remember it.
They used to have a Brady bowl game jersey as well. This is not new.
The weirdest part was they were selling both a home and away version of the Brady Orange Bowl jersey, even though we wore the whites in the actual game...
EDIT: eBay examples:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Hand-Signed-Tom-Brady-Fed-Ex-Orange-Bowl-Mi...
That's exactly it, I DON'T remember MDen ever selling them. I've seen them before online and in memorabilia stores.
But I guess I'll take your word for it.
Sell the numbers with an old name attached (who can get a cut) to keep the current players with number 21 & 2 from arguing that the school/NCAA is selling "their" jersey.
Also, this shirt. Not enough lolz.

Rivalries never die... Unless Notre Dame wants to play Purdue instead.
They apparently forgot the rest of the sentence, which should read, "....except by hand-delivered letter."
But they can be killed.
Since they didn't put a picture of the back of the shirt.....
I wonder how these might sell in Ohio.
*Whistles and slowly walks away*
That's a good question. My first inclination is that they would sell much like hotcakes.
Next you're going to tell me that Desmond did something to change the tide in the rivalry
In my head I checked overrated...but then thought the second part of your post was funny so switched it back to normal.
Well, that explains at least one voice in my head.
Nike made a line of legends jerseys back in the day like, 2002 and I think Howard was one of them. I bought a Harrington one from Oregon - tremendous waste of money.
Wow 140.00 for the Glen Rice Jersey, I love Glen but damn that is ridiculous.
I'll be picking up one of the Woodson jersey
These are awesome as pieces of nostalgia, but count me in the camp that they look a bit cheap for $160. I mean, 1997 wasn't that long ago. The pictures might not be doing them justice, but that Woodson jersey in particular looks too much like a knock-off than I'd like.
Still, pretty awesome that you can get "official"-ish jerseys for the greats. Wonder who will be in the next batch? Brady? Long? Hart?
the number on the front looks a lot smaller then it should and smaller the the back by to much. its probably fine but I just went off the websites pics.
My only NFL jersey is a packers Woodson jersey. I'm tempted to make it a set.
Neat. I'd love either jersey. But I'd also like a Anthony Carter #1 jersey.
I have one like that, of Martell Webb.
You have to be the apparel junkie on this board. We all have gotten pieces here and there of all your apparel/memorabilia, but damn would I love to see all of the stuff that you have. I don't want to think of the costs though.
I had the absolute worst luck buying football jerseys for awhile. Keep in mind, at the time I wanted to have the exact jersey the team was wearing.
Ones off the top of my head-
- Bought a white #1 screen printed Nike (the ones with the Ms on the sleeves) in 2004 and they switch to the "bib" road jerseys the following year
- Bought an authentic #86 Home Jersey in June 2008 and I find out the next day they are switching to adidas the upcoming year. That press release came out way before June 2008 but I guess I missed it as shocking as that is.
- Bought an authentic, $180 #2 "elephant tusk" road jersey in winter 2008 which was supossed to be for McGuffie and then he transfers shortly after. Good thing Vincent Smith came in. Retired it as a Vincent Smith jersey when they made the switch recently and de-tusked the road jerseys.
The streak was broken in 2010 when I bought an authentic home jersey, #2 for only $30 (I know a guy).
Still haven't got around to buying a current road jersey because they have those annoying little block Ms above where the nameplate is supossed to be. I guess they produced those designs back in 2011 when Michigan was supossed to wear the TechFits but then that debacle in the game at Northwestern happened.
I refuse to buy a current jersey until they remove the nameplate block Ms and they add the B1G logo patch. I've been pestering Doug at MDen about getting the patches on there or at the very least sell patches and I can sew it onto my current home #2 jersey.
I pre ordered these 2 from MDEN when Tiedman & Formby posted on their facebook that they were making them. MDEN just emailed me a couple hours ago that they would be shipping so when I receive them I will take some pics and let you guys know if they are worthy of the price tag or not. At the very least I will pair both of them with my Packers jerseys from both and frame them.
The picture makes it look cheap but the description says embroidered numbers and name so maybe this is just a placeholder pic? Their website doesn't have many pictures of their items so a good one may not exist. Would definitely like to see a real picture before jumping in.
Is there any connection between this and the O'Bannon suit? Are they getting a cut of the proceeds?
LOL at $160. I got my authentic Denard and Charles jerseys from China for $22 a piece.
You mean to tell me that this whole time, those #2 jerseys were really for Charles Woodson?? They told me it was just an arbitrary #2 and it was a coincidence. We've been had!
