McMurphy: MSU to Holiday Bowl

Submitted by Larry Appleton on
So we’ve either jumped them for the Outback, or we’ve fallen to the Pinstripe. Regardless, PANIC!!!

Yeah, I would much prefer Michigan play an interesting opponent than some mediocre SEC team in Tampa. If MSU asked Manuel to switch games tomorrow, I'd hope he'd do it. But then again, this is a fanbase that thinks calling Michigan "Regular Michigan" a put down, so not surprising they complained about a totally meaningless bowl game matchup.

Washington getting picked for the Fiesta Bowl killed that. Stanford was only going to make the Holliday Bowl if there was only one Pac 12 team in the NY6. Once there were two, Stanford was booked to the Alamo Bowl.

I don't care about most fans--I care about watching Michigan, as do most people who care about watching Michigan, and it's pretty rad to wake up on New Year's Day and turn on a Michigan bowl game.

funny respect and disrespeckt.   Going to try to make it back for SMU and Nebraska next year.  As long as we win the Bowl game its ok with me.

Citrus is going to be LSU-ND. ACC gets the slot if B1G gets Orange Bowl berth apparently. MSU will win the Holiday due to Disrespekt

We get to play an 8-4 USC team with a pulse, vs. being matched up with a 7-5 Oregon team with no QB that no one respects. We have a lot to gain in the Outback Bowl and nothing to win vs. Oregon. Also we jumped Sparty for no fair reason again, which is just so disrespektful

To the sparty whining. But selfishly I would have been to able to go to San Diego. And as far as match ups I think going against Coach Leach and Luke Falk would have been much more fun than watching replays of the Clowney Vincent Smith play pregame. Plus it wouldn't hurt recruiting in Socal

It's going to be Michigan’s 101st-ranked total offense against South Carolina’s 51st-ranked total defense, and South Carolina’s 107th-ranked total offense against Michigan’s third-ranked total defense.

That would seem like Michigan has the edge, based on defense, but 8-4 South Carolina has two wins against teams with winning records, North Carolina State (8-4) and Missouri (7-5). Granted, those were South Carolina's first two games of the season, but 8-4 Michigan has not beaten a team with a winning record this season.

While it will be painful to watch hundreds of replays of Jadeveon Clowney meeting Vincent Smith in the backfield and knocking Mr. Smith's winged helmet nine yards back while recovering the fumble in the 2013 Outback Bowl, it might be nice if Jim Harbaugh were to invite Vincent Smith to be one of the team's guests on the sidelines for inspiration during the 2018 Outback Bowl. #EATING

SCAR is not good.  I've watched them a little bit this year and was not impressed.  8-4 because NC State was one of those teams that could have won big but also was capable of losing to almost anyone ... and the SEC East was historically pathetic.  So don't overread that headline 'W' or their record.

They really, really didn't beat anyone this year.  That #107 ranking for their offense is not misleading ... they were very unimpressive on the hoof.

This ought to be a game where we can get a good bit of traction for Peters to build from.

Michigan's offense overall is 72nd per S&P; South Carolina has the 88th ranked offense. The defenses are 10th and 46th. South Carolina really is a 6-6 team that had some good TO luck and beat a crap ton of teams ranked 80+ in the nation. And they are an experienced team; top 10 in returning production. So this isn't some young team learning the game. It's a mediocre team that won some toss-ups. Michigan is the better team and my guess is this game looks like the Florida game where the Gamecocks hang around a bit before Michigan figures out their defense and then just runs over them.
