GMATT already claimed him at 5-tech

McGary as TE makes some obvious sense -- he's big and tall ... throw the ball into his zip code and it's a TD.

But Mattison's talk of McGary as 5-tech intrigued me.  I'm sure Mattison was joking ... but only joking to a degree.  Can a guy that size effectively play 5-Tech?  Or is he "too" tall for the role?

(I'd pity the QB trying to throw over McGary with his arms up.)

I guess we wouldn't need to roll him out of the pocket.

On a serious note, I've always wondered why some of the more athletic college basketball centers have not been red zone specialists.  Can you imagine declaring McGary eligible the for the OSU game, without giving them time to rearrange their roster to match up?  I'm not sure about the NCAA rules on this, but what would stop Brady from signing him for a single game like that, aside from eating a scholarship that was destined for the basketball team?

While I am being reflective, how come big time basketball schools don't let some of their players sit the bench for football?  Isn't the rule that a two sport athlete defaults their scholarship to the football team?  Am I completely wrong?  That seems like an easy way to game the system.  Having tons of basketball scholarships available for teams like Indiana would only help them.

But based on his progression this year in BBall he'd be silly to risk an injury.  Still, he's got great hands.  Can you imagine a 6' 10" TE in the Red-Zone?  Wow.....

As awesome as McGary would be as a red zone threat, I bet GRIII would be better. MM has 4 inches on him, but I bet GRIII has McGary by 15 inches in vertical leap, and he could get to his spot faster. GRIII would be a slightly taller version of Funchess but with probably a better vertical. Would be sick.

A 6'10" tight end in the red zone who already has great hands? Yes please.

But in all seriousness, stick with basketball. No need for further risking an injury, especially with McGary's progression over the past few weeks.

In all seriousness for as tough as McGary is, basketball is less physical and he's a vital asset to this team next year. No reason at all to risk him in another sport doing something like this. Would be just as dumb as OSU playing Craft at DB.

My guess is that there is so much more to learn in the sport that there's a very small chance that the guy will be useful.  You can outjump any DB, but there's still a relatively small window for a QB to throw the ball, and you're useless to the team other than your ability to grab the ball in that four square foot window.

I would prefer that he and Bacari work on his post moves so that Michigan can return to the final four next year and tear up the nba after that. But that's just me.

Would McGary dive after incomplete passes and balls thown out of bounds?

I picture him leaping into the stands three rows deep
