McGary elects to have back surgery, out indefinitely
I wonder if McGary misses the season whether he'll still go out in the draft or whether the injury forces him back to Ann Arbor for 2014-15?
This injury has to be a major blow to his draft stock. On the bright side...2014 should be a great year for us considering neither GRIII or Stauskas are producing NBA first rd pick type seasons. We should have a ton of experience and an improved Walton/Irvin.
Robinson has done enough to still be a 1st rounder. Plus, he's been trending upwards.
Here's a mock draft from 5 days ago that has him going 23rd (with MM ahead of him).
But his game will necessarily change with McGary out...
Respectfully disagree. Robinson is not first round material. He cannot create offense off the dribble in a half court set. He is a small forward, he will to improve his offense. He needs another year, and I truly believe this will help make his mind up. I think he stays and 2014 if Kameron Chapman can develop, M will be loaded. Also wonder of Donnal loses his red shirt now, which sucks.
I understand your argument given the first 10ish games this year, but all the insiders and people who cover the NBA say he's a first rounder.
He has (finally) started to create his own shot (see: Arizona and Stanford). I don't think that's in his nature, but he has the ability and is slowly starting to show it. And remember that creating off the dribble isn't at all the most important thing NBA people want to see out of him. He's always been a high NBA prospect because of his athleticism, defending, rebounding, and shooting for his position. When you throw in the emerging off-the-dribble stuff, I would bet he's far more likely to work his way back into the lotto than he is to fall out of round 1.
His mind is already made up, so I'm hoping and rooting for him to continue this progression and do everything he can to help himself and the team this year. He isn't coming back for his junior season. Of course that could change especially with MM's future uncertain, but I think it's foolish for anyone to expect him to be back next year.
I have heard same scout stuff, so it is tough to argue against that. Just my two cents. Stanford is not the most athletic team and it will be interesting how Robinson performs in half court sets against, Wisconsin and MSU. Teams are focusing on shutting down Stauskus penetraton and Walton just can't get it done yet. The opportunity will be there for GRIII to create a little. I hope I am wrong, but if I am right we get another year of Robinson. I still think he is back.
Also wonder of Donnal loses his red shirt now, which sucks.
As I posted below, Beilein said at the press conference that Donnal will still redshirt, barring another injury.
thank you missed that, but I am glad dude is skinny
thank you missed that, but I am glad dude is skinny
projecting their evaluations of players on NBA GMs---who likely know a tad more about how a player projects than we fans. GRIII would have gone in the 1st round last year and will certainly go in the 1st this year if he elects to come out--which he will. Every respectable source says so. I suspect those who believe GRIII isn't ready were equally certain that Timmy wouldn't be drafted in the 1st round, wouldn't make an NBA roster and was headed for the D league. I am also comfortable that GRIII will get good advice--he is surrounded by people who understand the system.
I also fear that back surgery is not likely to change Mitch's decision about going pro---but, of course, it may well depend on the results of the surgery. Selfishly, this is horrible for how it impacts this season.
Stop trying to talk like one. This is the same kind of talk that said THJ wasn't a first rounder.
I love how 90% of this board HATES the NBA, but everyone is a Jay Bilas Draft expert.
The NBA drafts on POTENTIAL NOT PRODUCTION.
GRIII is still VERY much a 1st rounder. McGary is too if he can prove his condition isn't long term.
All of this can change, but as of now, both of those are facts. Whether we like them or not, whether they make sense or not.
I personally think they both need another year, but that's my opinion. It doesn't change the fact that they're a still both first rounders. However, neither may be lottery picks anymore (at this time).
The issue with the 2014/2015 season is that we don't have enough scholarships for everyone to return--with Morgan the only one leaving with no more eligibility remaining. If everyone returned, then we would have 14 players on scholarships with the incoming freshman class. Horford would be the only 5th-year senior and would be sticking around.
Was wondering the same thing. This could mean he laces up in Ann Arbor for another year. Really wish him the best & a fast recovery either way.
Just talked to a couple NBA guys -- both echoed same sentiment with McGary. With back issues and way be plays, could fall out of 1st round.

Do you by chance mean the year 2013 when UM basketball went to a Final Four for the first time since before most current undergrads were born? That is the year you don't like, I kinda think it was a fair to ok year for basketball.
Well obviously not, just referring to all the bad and/or unfortunate crap that has happened to us this year, which it seems like UM has definitely had its fair share.
In ten to twenty years all of you will only remember Trey Burke v. Kansas when you think about 2013.
This "worst year ever" meme around here is so whiny and tired. The basketball team had its best season since 1989, but somehow losing a close NCAA title game is included as some terrible event. And the football team went 7-5; that was disappointing for sure but a far cry from where we were just a few years ago. This is the kind of emo nonsense that makes this blog at times hard to read, especially when it catches on like wildfire.
I think you're taking it waaaay too seriously. It's a joke. Because the year is almost over. Get it?
and sure I guess you can say that 7-5 is a far cry from the 3-9 RR put up in his first year but the situations are totally incomparible.
The fact is Hoke went 7-5 in his third year and so did RR. To me this year was as disapointing as RR's 3rd year if not more.
How do you not recognize the relentless awfulness that has occurred since the beginning of April?
There have been plenty of interstitials, like the nut punch of losing out on both Booker and Blackmon.
It's only a quirk of the calendar that leaves no catchy way to refer to this string of punishing misery.
This year has two parts. And for 2/3rds of a year, this has been the year from hell. Everything after the national semifinals has been vile.
Everyone recognizes the football season was disappointing, not 2008 aweful, but disappointing. However since we have only played for a national championship in the two big sports a total of five combined times in 50 years...perhaps that should be something that trumps an below average fall.
2013. Just end already!
One last kick in the balls...
Its a running kick in the balls.
You're always soooo positive! 2013 must have been a bummer
DAMMIT! I hope and pray its a quick recovery.
I hate you 2013!
The M related news this year has been unbelievably bad
2014 can't get here soon enough.
A decent way into the season, even passably playing in his time out there. Little chance at return too. Wish we could know what the actual diagnosis and surgery were, just from a curiosity standpoint.
Die in a fucking fire, 2013.
But he might not. Lots of people think he can go pro and he just may.
With the draft as deep as it is this year and with so many questions now about Mitch's back he would probably slide into the second round. And at that point it makes sense to come back.
That would certainly be a silver lining. Next year's frontcourt could be pretty rough.
I guess we've seen the last of Mitch this season, and hopefully not for his Michigan career.
Hold me closer, Tiny Dancer.
I always thought it was Tony Danza.
Well, there goes the basketball season.
Seriously, 2013. You can go fuck yourself one-hundred-infinity-thousand-million times.
Fuck you, 2013.
I hate when teams use the word, "out indefiniely" or "suspended indefinely". Indefinely could mean so many different things
I had a lower back injury while in college, and you could have listed me as "unable to do X, Y, and Z indefinitely" at one point and been as truthful as you were able to be. Back injuries are a relative mystery compared to, say, knee injuries.
You are a piece of shit year!!! Thank god it ends soon and we can move on
That's cute and all, but come on man. McGary is our most dominating force on the team. Without him our post is all but dwindled down to Morgan and Horford. As much as I appreciate Morgan's rebounding and Horford's shot blocking skills, They are an obvious downgrade especially now that our frontcourt depth is gone. It's a shitty situation and you have to admit, this obviously hinders our chances of a Sweet 16 appearance.
Much easier to say with a team of 112 players versus a team of 12 players.
We have plenty of all Americans sure fire nba first rounders ready to step up...oh wait a minute...
Ha ha ha ha ha. Yeah, our preseason all american big man is interchangeable with someone else. Right.
This ain't college football, and it's definitely not 185 kids on a roster/World of the Big Two/Pre-every team everywhere is on tv, somewhere college football.
Geez, this year really could not be more demoralizing. Oh crap! I just said that. I am now vigoorously knocking on wood, rubbing rabbits feet, casting spells on myself and anything else that might reverse the bad mojo.
That is all
Not that it matters because I don't believe he plans on staying the full four years, but I'll be the guy to ask the obligatory question: Can he apply for a medical redshirt?
It almost certainly won't matter. He's not likely to stay for five years total, so calling this year a medical redshirt likely won't ever affect anything.
No panic... what the hell am I talking about?... THIS SUCKS!!! Jordan Morgan: man up and start playing big boy basketball or else we are NIT bound.
Tell me this year has just been a bad dream....
Hopefully, everything goes well and Mitch gets back to playing as soon as possible. I did like what he said - he wanted to be healthy for the team and contribute as best he could, hence this decision. His presence will be missed, but I would rather have Mitch at 100% later than have someone play through pain and potentially compound an injury. I wish him a speedy recovery.
Please ask Brian to start reporting on a fictional basketball season in which things go much better. I, for one, will happily go along with this.
Batman had better run faster.
Hopefully he has a speedy recovery. I wish him the best.
That 2014 posbang thread was started too early!
Heal up, rest up, and get well soon. That's what's important. Good luck to Mitch and the rest of the Wolverines as they carry on strong.
I wish Mitch a speedy and full recovery, I hope he comes back stronger from this. I also hope that this is a silver lining that causes him to return for his junior year to lead us to the promised land that season.
I really hope that this is the last dong-punch we get for 2013. <realizes we still have games on the calendar for this month, prays nothing bad happens>
sucks that he's out especially since he couldve been a high draft pick last year and this only hurts that. I wonder tho was surgery an option back in August? And if so, what was the reason to not have it done.
Do we burn Donnal's redshirt now?
If Morgan and Horford can stay out of foul trouble, I don't think we need Donnal. But, if he can play the 4, it seems necessary to play him. Basically Robinson and Bielefeld are the only options at 4 now.
I dont even have the energy or the surprise anymore to post the 'Panic and Run Around Screaming' picture. I'm so over it
There is an outside chance that our entire roster outside of Jordan Morgan returns next year now. That seemed unthinkable a couple months back.
That slim possibility doesn't do much to make me feel better now...
This is outstanding.
I really like that the throwing of an entire table doesn't seem to cow the other side even marginally. This gif is made so much better by the fact that after she throws a fucking table two people still have the temerity to ding her with chairs. Impressive accuracy on the chair tosses, btw. She is large, but that is still uncanny aim.
speedy recovery, mitch.
I hope he gets healthy soon. I now hop we burn donnel redshirt if he is out long for depth in frontcourt go blue
Having this surgery at this absurd time will harm his draft stock, harm the team, and most importantly harm blog-reading fans dramatically. McGary, OTOH, has one back to live with and I'll bet the situation must've been pretty extreme for him to chose to have the surgery right now. Retired athletes often have injuries that affect them for their entire lives; I'm sure it's the smart choice. One more reason why we should appreciate these guys who choose to come back when they could be drafted.
If he does this because he plans on coming back next season then this is actually a plus IMO. He didn't seem right playing this year and hell come back fully healed by next October. It's a big IF though
the other reason to do it now is to get right for the predraft camps. if he comes back next year then great but I won't be shocked if he left after the season
if coming back didn't help either GRIII or Mitch--albeit for different reasons--then those two specifically as well as future pro prospects generally may opt to go early rather than risk injury or a down season. Show me the money---now!
Fuck!! This sucks. Why does this year hate everything that is Michigan?!?!
Good luck, Mitch. Hopefully he has a quick and complete recovery!!!!!
Fuck, shit, fuck. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
I guess we should lower expectations to a more realistic goal at least make the NCAA tournament. Donnal should play I don't understand why they redshirt in bball anyways if he really is a good player he probably won't stay five years anyways. Get him in the lineup tomorrow
With or without McGary, this team still is talented enough to make it to the second weekend of the tournament.
Jordan Morgan is a perfect example of why it sometimes pays off to redshirt in basketball. He wouldn't be on the roster this season if he hadn't redshirted, and the team definitely needs him now. Donnal strikes me as a four-year player, so giving him an extra year to develop seems like the smart move.
right now, then he wouldn't have been red-shirted. If he was ready, he'd be playing. Beilein understands that there is little reason to red-shirt high end players. Donnal is a prospect--far from a certain contributor.
if his draft stock is ever gonna rise up again, he's gonna have to come back better than he was during the tourny.
While this is a big blow, I would still bet on this team making the tourney.
Definitely! They can still go 10-8 in big ten play its not that difficult
you mean "reasonably expect," then yes, i would reasonably expect michigan to make the tourny.
but would i bet on it? nawwwww.
With the information that was public, I didn't think that his injury was that bad...guess I was horribly wrong. Sure hope he recovers to his old self, the young man has a very bright future.
To every one of you posters who earlier stated "well, at least 2013 can't get worse" here's your answer - it can always get worse.
So stop asking that!
Mitch's career is in jeopardy, really feel for the kid, for his sake, I hope he can come back and lead us on a nice tourney run this spring. If not, and he returns for 2014-15', and then goes pro, he'd be a 23 yaer old rookie in the NBA with only 2 seasons of college and back surgery as experience, those guys don't get drafted in the NBA.
Selfishly, I want him to help us this season or next, but in reality, this kid's career is in question now.
Someone let me know when this fucking year is over.
Do we know what type of lower back surgery was performed? There has to be a Doctor or two on this site..lol....
on up to a fusion; We don't have anything to go on, of course, but given his age and potential I imagine they will try to do the least invasive procedure possible.
They would not do a fusion on an athlete like that. Microdiscectomy would be the only surgery I could justifiably see. If they go through anteriorly he could realistically be back by mid February.
From WEB MD...
If your job requires physical labor (such as lifting or operating machinery that vibrates) you may be able to go back to work 4 to 8 weeks after surgery.
Here's to a microdiscectomy.
Not a doctor, but I do monitor spinal surgeries for a living. LIke the above said, it depends. If it's just a disc and there's no instability or hardware necessary, it generally isn't that big of a deal. (relatively speaking)
I'm not a doctor but it all depends on where Izzo stuck the needle in the voodoo doll.
Wishing Mitch a swift & full recovery.
Oh, 2013, it must have been March Madness that made me fall for you, but you turned out to be a real bitch. Get thee hence!
Nothing else needs to be said on the matter.
We've supported the team through mediocre seasons before. We can support them through whatever this season brings. Basketball is a funny game, and they could still surprise us. Go blue, And go Michigan rehabilitation!
If we have to rely on Jordan Morgan to get to the tournament we are screwed
That worked out pretty well for us actually when Darius was getting him the ball. Morgan played his ass off last game(for as long as the crooked refs would let him play). All is not yet lost.
We can get to the tournament but not having McGary definitely hurts us once we are there.
Well they beat Stanford without Mitch or Horford (pretty much). They will still be tough. And remember that JM started most of the B1G season last year, which turned out ok, and all of the season before that, which turned out really ok.
OTOH, the MSU and OSU games suddenly look much harder. Mitch was our biggest advantage vs OSU, and a HUGE potential neutralizer in the MSU games vs Payne.
i just hope he can eventually play in 2014-15 and beyond. by describing it as a "condition" that he doesn't want to elaborate on, instead of just a disc problem, i have serious concerns that his career may be over. let's hope the surgery goes well.
It may not be a disc problem. Could be a painful spondylolysis/listhesis or something of that nature. Neither a disc herniation or a spondy is necessarily career-ending.
Welp, I am glad I have a full glass of Sailor Jerry's and coke...
Sailor Jerry's is delicious!
Welp, I am glad I have a full glass of Sailor Jerry's and coke...
Apparently it was a double.
great determination. He worked heavily prior to last season because he knew McGary could take his job. He may not have the talent but he has the heart to do well. My cousin worked with him one on one all summer prior to the previous season. He will do his part. Horford, he is intelligent but fouls and strength are what he needs to work on, like his potential but its on him to produce.
That is all.
You beat me to it. Absurd to call 2013 worst year ever. Everyone just loves to exaggerate on the internets apparently.
Well, remember that plenty of people posting here grew up in the 90s so they only have 20 or so years to fall back on. And I think the general consensus is this is the worst year based off expectations. We have seen underperforming from plenty of Michigan football teams but I can't remember an offense struggling to the degree this years team did, especially given what we knew they were capable of.
2008 was bad, but I feel like it was expected once we had the mass exodus. Hell, my big beef with 08 is losing to Notre Dame in the frozen four. That game still pisses me off.
2005 was mediocre but IMO that team wasn't really all that great. The losses were frustrating in fashion but with a sophomore backfield and no downfield threat opposite Avant the offense was what it was. And the defense had a tendency to collapse when it mattered.
Personally I'm not a huge basketball fan. March was fun but I would take a hockey championship over basketball any day and the end of the streak was rough. Add on the frustrations of football season and the seemingly endless run of bad luck and bad news and I can understand the meme. The only thing that could stop our bad luck was running into northwesterns worse luck.
Just my two cents.
Makes sense. If he was really having trouble physically this year, he should have surgery and rehab for next year. I seriously doubt a team will spend a 1st rounder on him unless there is just overwhelming proof he's fine or if they are open to stashing a pick (like San Antonio or Houston).
Mitch, the team, and the fans. I wish him a full and fast recovery. He should almost certainly return next year. I would doubt an NBA team would risk a first round pick on him. But, the rest of the year will need a BIG increase in performance from Morgan, Horford, and Bielfeldt. It is what it is.
Well, pain there you are again.
He seems to be a great kid with talent and an insane work ethic. I hope he fully recovers and has a great life in basketball or not.
Any idea on when he'll come back?
I was recently at the orthopedic guy for my disc issues and there was an older woman sitting across from me with a neck brace and a cane. She said one thing to me: "Make sure you take care of your back." Her words were pretty ominous. Back problems don't just go away so I'm glad he's not ignoring them. I wish him a complete recovery.
Come back stronger than ever.
Worst year of my life due my dad passing unexpectedly. Michigan sports struggles, albeit painful and anger provoking, were viewed in a different perspective by me this year. However, 2013 is when I realized I met my future wife. So, there was a silver lining.
Sorry for your loss.
Get well soon Mitch. One final dong punch later today and this year will finally be done. 2014 has to be better, right? Right??!!
have the ability to be a formidable tournament team. It is going to pay serious dividends to have experienced bigs such as Morgan and Horford for this specific reason. Losing last years tournament Mitch, a devastating blow. Losing this years obviously laboring Mitch, it sucks, but I for one have been kind of planning for this inevitability in my mind for a while. We beat Stanford at a neutral site without him, there is no reason to think we can't compete against other tournament quality teams without him. We need to win the next 3 games desperately to get a head start on the tournament.
You are drinking some kool aid man
Die. Die. Die!
(Is anyone else legitimately worried about tonight?)
Hide your kids....hide your wife. Just get to 1/1/14.
Now a plate of macaroni salad.... This place is crazy!!
