McGary elects to have back surgery, out indefinitely
Hopefully he heals quickly and comes back full strength

MOD EDIT: We'll combine the threads into one discussion. Also, I am not fond of 2013 - LSA

I hate when teams use the word, "out indefiniely" or "suspended indefinely". Indefinely could mean so many different things

I had a lower back injury while in college, and you could have listed me as "unable to do X, Y, and Z indefinitely" at one point and been as truthful as you were able to be. Back injuries are a relative mystery compared to, say, knee injuries.

And what, you think magic happens when the calendar turns 2014 just because those are new numbers?
The illogical "It's 2013's fault. This year sucks" meme has taken on accidental elements of the occult in this thread.

The expectation is on the position not the player. - Bo Schembechler
This is Michigan. No excuses. Next man up.

That's cute and all, but come on man. McGary is our most dominating force on the team. Without him our post is all but dwindled down to Morgan and Horford. As much as I appreciate Morgan's rebounding and Horford's shot blocking skills, They are an obvious downgrade especially now that our frontcourt depth is gone. It's a shitty situation and you have to admit, this obviously hinders our chances of a Sweet 16 appearance.

Much easier to say with a team of 112 players versus a team of 12 players.

Ha ha ha ha ha. Yeah, our preseason all american big man is interchangeable with someone else. Right.
This ain't college football, and it's definitely not 185 kids on a roster/World of the Big Two/Pre-every team everywhere is on tv, somewhere college football.

Geez, this year really could not be more demoralizing. Oh crap! I just said that. I am now vigoorously knocking on wood, rubbing rabbits feet, casting spells on myself and anything else that might reverse the bad mojo.

That is all

It almost certainly won't matter. He's not likely to stay for five years total, so calling this year a medical redshirt likely won't ever affect anything.

No panic... what the hell am I talking about?... THIS SUCKS!!! Jordan Morgan: man up and start playing big boy basketball or else we are NIT bound.

Hopefully, everything goes well and Mitch gets back to playing as soon as possible. I did like what he said - he wanted to be healthy for the team and contribute as best he could, hence this decision. His presence will be missed, but I would rather have Mitch at 100% later than have someone play through pain and potentially compound an injury. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Please ask Brian to start reporting on a fictional basketball season in which things go much better. I, for one, will happily go along with this.

Batman had better run faster.
Hopefully he has a speedy recovery. I wish him the best.

Heal up, rest up, and get well soon. That's what's important. Good luck to Mitch and the rest of the Wolverines as they carry on strong.

I wish Mitch a speedy and full recovery, I hope he comes back stronger from this. I also hope that this is a silver lining that causes him to return for his junior year to lead us to the promised land that season.
I really hope that this is the last dong-punch we get for 2013. <realizes we still have games on the calendar for this month, prays nothing bad happens>

Beilein says Mark Donnal will still redshirt. Would take another injury to change that plan.

There is an outside chance that our entire roster outside of Jordan Morgan returns next year now. That seemed unthinkable a couple months back.
That slim possibility doesn't do much to make me feel better now...

I really like that the throwing of an entire table doesn't seem to cow the other side even marginally. This gif is made so much better by the fact that after she throws a fucking table two people still have the temerity to ding her with chairs. Impressive accuracy on the chair tosses, btw. She is large, but that is still uncanny aim.

Having this surgery at this absurd time will harm his draft stock, harm the team, and most importantly harm blog-reading fans dramatically. McGary, OTOH, has one back to live with and I'll bet the situation must've been pretty extreme for him to chose to have the surgery right now. Retired athletes often have injuries that affect them for their entire lives; I'm sure it's the smart choice. One more reason why we should appreciate these guys who choose to come back when they could be drafted.

if coming back didn't help either GRIII or Mitch--albeit for different reasons--then those two specifically as well as future pro prospects generally may opt to go early rather than risk injury or a down season. Show me the money---now!

Fuck!! This sucks. Why does this year hate everything that is Michigan?!?!
Good luck, Mitch. Hopefully he has a quick and complete recovery!!!!!
