Malik McDowell RT @D1_LEEK My top 4 colleges! Michigan, Michigan State, Florida State, Ohio State.— Tom VanHaaren (@TomVH) January 28, 2014
If he had no interest, he didn't have to list us. Maybe there's a chance.
I'll believe it when he signs.
Sorry, don't mean to be a downer.
You'll believe he has interest when he signs? So...if he doesn't sign with Michigan, he wasn't interested? Interesting...
Considering he skipped OSU to go to East Lansing last weekend, I'd assume they are 4th in that list?
He's going to OSU this weekend.
for Urban to do Urban-like things.
Cuz if you are not first, your last
His last what?
Tuxedo t-shirt baby Jesus
Particularly true in recruiting.
I refuse to be optimistic about him committing. I don't want to be let down again.
Keep your expectations low, and then you'll always be pleasantly surprised. Or a know-it-all.
The basketball program has made a habit of exceeding expectations. The football program... well, you get the picture.
Mayb the win in bball really helped
Could have, actually. The parties on campus Saturday night probably were more subdued after they lost.
I will tell you that State parties just the same in any situation.
I was hoping for the same
to commit to U of M, but it's classy (or at least a good political move) to include Michigan in the top 4. I'm guessing MSU still but who knows...
Well, it's better than not being in his previous top 6. I don't know why, but I would be shocked if he picks us.
Saw he'd be taking his final official to Ohio State. Personally, I think we miss out on him but hey what do I know.
Here is a novel thought... Notice how he took officials on the other three schools
Its as if his dad told him to "get it out of your system now."
Or "see if any of them can offer more"
Ask yourself this...how does a childhood fan whose own parents are huge fans NOT go on an official?
This smells fishy...and in OUR favor.
put down the pipe
So...childhood lifelong fan...grew up in a wolverine household.....his dad quoted yesterday in saying hes going to the best progrem with the best academics.
Top 4 teams he listed in order
The latter three of which, he takes official visits to. Hmmmm
If all the above is true, then you should see the pattern here. It seems like hes trying to see if anyone can offer more than michigan. Or that his dad said to get it all out of his system and go visit.
It is ODD AS HELL that he didnt take an official here, given the above facts.
Not in order I don't have a order!
— FAT LEEK (@D1_LEEK) January 28, 2014
Did he not list them in that order RAOUL ?
He's saying that regardless of how they're listed, the order is not indicative of anything. This happens all the time: A prospect will release a list, and people will jump to conclusions based on the order.
I really hope you were high last night when you wrote all of that. Reads like a person who likes the ganj' and was imbibing at the time.
He SHOULD have listed the Top 4 in a circular pattern to avoid confusion. Come on, man. Stop getting our hopes up!
Are you seriously alleging that McDowell or his father are seeking financial compensation?
That's a common phrase in recruiting that has nothing to do with money.
Listen, the kid is getting a full ride scholarship. As much he or his dad are Michigan fans, his dad should be happy wherever he goes. Not that i don't want him, but let's lay off thinking that a 17 year old is going to make a decision purely based on his "life long" fandom.
Agreed. He's Blue, not buying all the Sparty love. Of course they are in it, they are the OTHER in state school and playing close to home is a priority, they had the number one D and won the Rose Bowl - but Hoke and Gmatt got this on lock down..it's 2014 bitches...
Is that right?
Don't fail me now!
It seems like usually M hopes the parents stay out of it. Now, the tables have turned.
Are you just making things up?
Nope, his dad has said that they are trying to check everything the school has to offer including academics, and has raved about how great of a school Michigan is, based on the latest I've read it seems like his parents really want him to pick Michigan... At least that's what I think... so, Go parents I guess...
So you're telling me there's a chance!
Took at official visit. All I know is Michigan was my childhood favorite and nothing can change that love. Not even one bad season. This program will to the highest levels again for a long time.
Right. I think we found the fraud here in all this. Too odd he visits the other three and not us. ???? Cmon.
I smell a rat. This fucking media likes to bs everyone to keep readership.
Don't keep us in suspense. Just exactly what constitutes the "fraud" you're alleging is taking place?
would an official visit have made? He's been to AA like 10 times, he knows the coaches, knows the campus, knows what he'll be getting himself into...
So, he was a lifelong Michigan fan and the coaches are about to whiff on him due to one bad season?
What a fiasco.
You can't put the recruiting hopes and dreams of Michigan on the back of one guy deciding whether he'd like to go to school there or not. People have different preferences and it's not a lock that the best school in the state automatically gets the best players from that state (and it's not very debatable which program is the best in the state right now anyway).
People are individuals. We've poached Derrick Green from VA, Peppers from NJ, Donovan Warren from CA, Stephen Schilling from WA, and on and on. McDowell just might not like Michigan that much
So you are saying that there is a school out there that has not lost a "lifetime fan" recruit to another school before? Please list that school.
Hint: it happens all the time.
You realize that for a 17 year old, "life long Michigan fan" likely means like four or five years, right? When I was a kid I was a life long Michigan fan who also really liked Kentucky and Arizona and Miami and like half a dozen other schools. I was a life long Pistons fan who had a Dallas Mavericks jersey (Jamal Mashburn) and a Charlotte Hornets starter jacket. I was. Life long Lions fan but my only football jersey was a Ricky Waters Eagles jersey.
The fandom of a kid isn't always crazy loyal.
If you liked all of them then you were never a life long fan. I do see your point though.
I was a die-hard Pistons fan, but I definitely had that Orlando Magic T-mac jersey. Wore it to practice all the time.
Oh god, this post just reminded me of my old Charlotte Hornets Starter jacket that I used to wear every winter as a kid...
FOR SHAME, ME...
McDowell has already decided Michigan is the choice and is visiting other schools to waste their time. Yes?
That's the 2014 way of thinking. It's got us this far. Our odds of landing Malik can't be worse than our odds of beating Wisc, Iowa, AND State. Plus, we have a history with DT's with the initials MM.
Didn't Big Will Campbell do that very thing? Didn't include UM in one of his cuts either, then there they were on the table at the Army AA Game.
I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised
This is the alternate reality I have decided to live in.
ITS 2014 MY MAN THE YEAR OF THE. POSBANG
Michigan State only gets good production out of 2 star recruits. Ohio State cannot coach defense.
If he ends up at either school I can't complain!
You lost me
I smell a surprise Michigan victory here.
When he was a UM lock all the RCMB said was how overrated he was. It will be funny to see them backtrack when he goes to MSU.
I don't think that'll be very funny at all.
If you put a team first in your Twitter favorites list, you inevitably commit to them. I'm just using history, science, and geology to back up my facts, so you don't even have to bother checking.
As a geology historian, I can confirm that this is indeed true.
He has been to Ann Arbor 12 times from what I saw from one of the recuiting services. Maybe he is giving the other schools a chance to win him over, just to make sure. Plus maybe his official to msu was more to watch the game.
TA DA!!!!!!! finally someone here sees what i see
I think Marshall had visited MSU like 5-7 times but never committed. Finds something he likes better (Michigan) and commits. MSU. Friendzoned.
It's the same with McDowell. Visited Michigan a ton of times and had a thousand chances to commit but didn't. It's likely because Michigan is missing something and he's looking for something better.
Love the optimisim.
I think kid is doing the right thing. Of course I hope he commits to Michigan.
As a matter of fact we NEED him. Our defense NEEDS more talent.
The farther away from 2013 we get the better our chances. It's science.
Just tell him we wouldn't let Hand do engineering, but if he wants in to the EECS program, BROKE (Brandon+Hoke) will give him special permission...
'Noles man, noles
He is not going to FSU. Sam Webb has said on his radio show that distance is a huge issue for his family, especially his grandmother who wants to watch him play. I'd be surprised if he leaves the state.
We've played this game before, so many times before. Guy has Michigan as his childhood favorite and/or proclaimed leader early on, maintains that position through process, slowly starts to drift and visit other schools, and then inevitably signs somewhere else.
People will neg me but you know you watch this exact scenario play out several times each and every recruiting cycle. McDowell isn't going to play for Michigan.
Agreed. I'm not going to name any of the previous examples, but he just seems like a new lead in the same role. I'd love to be wrong, but it hasn't even seemed like a possibility in weeks. I'll hope for a pleasant surprise, but I'm not expecting much.
I would go so far as to say this scenario is like a guy caught in the friendzone. He doesn't want to believe he doesn't really have a chance anymore. "Dude shut up. She totally said I'm one of her bestest friends. I even went with her to get her nails done last week!...So what if she's hanging out with that guy from the football team?! That doesn't mean anything! I'm not in the friendzone!!!"
Who are the previous examples???? Damien Harris doesnt count. Who were lifelong M fans that we wanted that committed elsewhere?????
I was talking about guys who we were sure were coming to UM, who had some connection, or visited 100 times, or were a lock, but then ended up elsewhere. Zettel, Treadwell, Diamond, etc. Even when signs pointed to no, we held out hope, only to have those hopes dashed.
We were sure only because the media told us so. None of them u mentioned were A lifelong fan from a M family. Big big difference here.
Zettel wasn't a lifelong UM fan from a family of UM fans?
I read an article on his family, so don't know personally. But I can tell you Zettel attended a ton of Michigan games. I know because I walked by him in the blue lot on my way to the stadium, always looked like he was having fun. Was absolutely shocked that he went to PSU. He must have really, really hated the 3-3-5 (as well as his HS coach).
Just think that bridge will be there and it'll be there.
Glad to find another Kelly's Heroes fan
Well we don't really know anything about him other than he's visited MSU and Ohio recently so maybe we are in the lead for all we can tell. I would think we would have offered another DL if we didn't have a chance with us only taking 3 last year.
dude lists 4 teams doesn't mean chit. It's probably down to 2 right now, but everyone would puke in their cocoa puffs if he actually said that, so he just leaves in the other 2 that might make sense. Ain't no way a kid who grew up a fan wouldn't have taken an official here by now. Good luck to him but he won't play for Michigan.
Let's get him!
I would love to end all this speculation and accept the kids that sign their letters of intent to Michigan. I hope that McDowel joins that group.
Hopefully UM earns the commitment from him.
I'm gonna go ahead and assume since Michigan was the first school he typed on that list, we're the favorite :)
Malik is a smart kid from a great family. That's why I say we have a chance. Dad has a bigger perspective that one Rose Bowl. Plus they value academics - which is a plus.
Speaking personally UM has opened so many doors for me it's crazy. My company's management team has quite a few Michigan grads, but no Spartys. MSU is a good school, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't have the national reputation of M.
If Malik chooses another school don't go all ballistic on the kid. He's doing what he wants.
Anyway I hope he comes to Michigan. Go Blue!
"Speaking personally UM has opened so many doors for me it's crazy."
Similar for me, although I did not attend UM (was fortunate enough to get into a private school in California that I shall not name) there are somehow many other UM fans in upper management at my company and that has opened more doors/created connections than the prestige of my alma mater. There's no doubt in my mind I would not be where I am in my career if I were not a big UM fan and had those connections as a result.
Which is also said by virtually every recruit who chooses a school other than Michigan. Nobody ever says, "well, education isn't really important so I chose Ohio State."
OK, everybody except Cardale Jones.
Hopefully he realizes that Narduzzi will be gone after next season and doesn't want to deal with the uncertainty of who will replace him. Maybe he also realizes that Michigan has the makings of an elite defense that just needs some elite talent on the d-line. Maybe he just realizes that Michigan is a FAR BETTER school and Ann Arbor is a better town then EL. Who knows?
Hopefully he decides to GO BLUE!
is going nowhere...he'll be the defensive coordinator as long as Dantonio is around.
I'm gonna go ahead and say no. He was very close to taking the UCONN job this year, but turned it down because they wouldn't commit enough money for assistants. Very small chance he's at Msu after this season
What constitutes him being close to taking the Uconn job?
MSU - 75%
OSU - 20%
UM - 2.5%
FSU - 2.5%
I dont believe this is a Will Campbell situation. If he really prefers UM over MSU, he wd have taken the official with UM, not MSU. I understand him taking an official to FSU, Florida or LSU cos those are far away places. But MSU? A place he has visited many times?
Maybe he would have taken an official to Michigan if there were any good basketball games going on in Ann Arbor...
I predict that he will pick a college in America, cause America.
Count out Toronto just yet...
If his parents being huge fans were deciding this, he'd have committed to us by now. It's pretty clear he's making this decision based on what HE wants, and Sam has mentioned he's largely about the fun - and for whatever reason he has more fun at Staee.
he's been to michigan a lot! He may already have his mind made up that Michigan is the place and is taking all these O.V. to make sure. The contrary is Michigan isn't even in top 2 and he isn't even interested, only keeping us in the list out of respect. Tough to say, it's this kids decision, I hope he goes where he is happiest.
I want to care, but I just can't anymore. Call me on NSD.
He talked about McDowell yet again on this morning's recruiting roundup (podcast; go to ~5:30). His key point may have been this: "If anyone is telling you which way this is going to go, they are not privy to the inner workings of this recruitment."
He also suggested that Florida State may arise as a comprimise choice. McDowell had an "outstanding" visit down there, his mom liked their coaches, and they have family down there.
He also said things could change as far as the plans for the OSU official go. The Michigan staff is trying to at least get an in-home visit set up.
Dad wants Michigan.
Malik wants MSU.
Mom likes FSU and they go that route so dad and family aren't upset he chose Sparty over Michigan.
I think your rough quote is a misinterpretation. There were people claiming that McDowell committed to MSU last weekend. Webb is saying those claims are wrong and that the family still has a deliberation process to go through before a decision is made.
Wasn't in any way saying Sparty was out of it. Reiterated that McDowell has more fun at MSU (which, must have been a fun year on campus when they go 11-1, but if the 7-6 year before probably wasn't the same atmosphere).
Best thing to take from the update is that he says no one knows. I personally think Sam lets his heart get in the way and biases toward M (he should have seen the Hand decision coming given his access), so I'm still thinking MSU. But it's better news than the flood of crystal ball picks, or rumors McDowell already committed to Sparty last weekend.
I listen to Sam virtually every morning, and in the final 2-3 weeks prior to Hand's announcement Sam was very open in saying that it was wide open between UM and Alabama, and while he was his usual optimistic "Michigan has a chance!" self, he was NOT predicting Hand to Michigan. In fact, he said repeatedly that if Hand's decision was purely about football, that he would go to Alabama.
He just meant that in terms of UA being a football factory. His final statement was, "If he's going with his heart, it will be Michigan; if he's going with his mind, it will be Alabama." Which I agree is neither one way or the other.
But do you remember what another criteria was that last week (or even the day or two before)? The father told him that whether Nick Saban stays at UA or goes to Texas would be one of the primary factors. That right there should have been the indicator that he was going to Alabama. I'm a biased fan homer, so I didn't pick up on that either. But after the fact, with a clear head on what people say, that was the key in knowing Hand was going to UA. In my opinion Sam should have known that.
But no offense implied, I'm a Sam fan. I promote his show on this blog every chance I get (listen on WTKA if in the area or hook them up on Iheartradio)
Yep, I remember that well. In addition, the fact that Sam did not travel down to VA to attend the presser was a tipoff to me that Hand wasn't coming here. Sam strenuously tried to deny that there was any connection, but I was skeptical of his denial.
By early fall I concluded that Hand wasn't coming here anyhow, so the decision wasn't a shock to me in the least.
All he's saying that a lot of people have concluded he's going to Sparty, and in his opinion no one knows because the family doesn't even know yet. He's specifically trying to refute those who believe he's 100% headed to Sparty or already committed.
I listened to Sam this morning too, and his statement could just as easily apply to all the people who think he'll choose Michigan because "he's been a lifelong fan" or "Education!"
If anything, what Sam has said repeatedly over the last week or so about how much MM "has more fun at MSU" (whatever that means) leads me to suspect that MSU will be the final destination, and that Sam won't be surprised at all.
If it's not Michigan, I hope it FSU, just on the chance he turns out to be a bona fide beast.
Isn't coming to Michigan! On to 2015 recruits!
being in there. Because as twitter has proven, douchebags will be douchebags
what difference there is between official visit and a unofficial? I do know the school foots the bill (on a official visit) and makes it easier for recruits who live far away to come and get a good look at school, but can't they take a unofficial and still get the same tour as a official visitor. I guess what I am asking in short is why would he MM waste an official to visit a close school when he can do it unofficially with his parents? It would make perfect sense that he would take an official to FSU so the school would pay air fare.
This is good news. Maybe? Who the hell knows......
There is a pretty good update on the status of MM's recruitment on the podcast. The feeling is that no one knows what's going on. MM's mother said the decision may go beyond National Signing Day.
I was trying to think about this from a player's perspective this morning, especially a defensive player. MSU is coming off a Rose Bowl win, FSU is coming off a national championship. MSU's defensive staff is being praised left and right all over America. There are obviously many many benefits to coming to UM, but those facts certainly weigh against it. Hopefully the degree, his connection to current players and recruits, his childhood fandom, and a belief that he can help right the ship will be enough to get him to commit to UM.
He might have to sit at either FSU or MSU, which would help Michigan's cause
I'm not sure about Florida State, but I think McDowell could probably be in the two-deep at MSU almost immediately.
