This is my main gripe with the recruiting industry. All off season these analysts rave about certain QB's throwing against air with no pass rush and no defense. It's like no one told them it's not real football.

Hunter Johnson is a perfect example of this. #1 QB in the country and looks great in drills but was last on this list. Put a defense out there and he's lost. Anyone who watched Brandon Peters and Avon last year vs Brownsburg saw how overmatched Johnson looked in comparison to Peters. Now, I think Johnson will be good in college mainly because of the offense he's going to play in, but he's not the pro style QB prospect a guy like Peters or McCaffrey is.

McCaffrey's mental makeup is off the charts and that's the most important trait in a QB. Add in that he's 6'5" with a great frame, doesn't have a private Qb coach, plays multiple sports, etc and his upside is off the charts. Excited to see what he's going to do under Harbaugh.

He doesn't need one now, but the point that the guy is making is that if you have a qb coach then you look more polished at this level which equates to getting a higher rating than you probably should have. Not that having a qb coach at this level is bad, but you are more likely to be near your "peak", so if that peak isn't truly elite then you may not have as much room to grow as someone that doesn't have a qb coach and has a lot of room for little technique adjustments that they haven't had in the past.

Dylan is an amazing athlete from a world class athletic family. Kids who hire QB coaches are compensating for shortcomings and hoping to overcome what they lack. McCaffrey doesn't need that. That is my point. Hiring someone to make you look better during auditions so you can hopefully get to college on a scholarship is what QB coaches are for.

Couldn't agree more.  I think one of the early evals of McCaffrey this week said he was too relaxed and if he could pick up his urgency and show off his arm strength more he would move up the list.  Well when there's a 300 pound behemoth coming down the pipe to destroy you I want the guy who's relaxed and doesn't just rifle it out at the first friendly jersey he sees.

Check out this video on Bleacher Report which is covering the "It Factory".

Watch how Dylan McCaffrey handles physical adversity, especially the part where he has to run up the sand dune and come back down and recite the play. In general, he was calm, cool, and collected performing these drills. I know he hasn't played a college down yet, but I would say that he carries himself the same way that Tom Brady carries himself on and off the field. He's not easily rattled. In other words, I think he brings the intangibles that make a successful quarterback.

Note: Dylan McCaffrey is seen in the video in about the first 5 minutes and nothing after that (for those of you that don't want to watch the whole clip). He is placed 6th following the conclusion of this particular day.

That's very true and underscores the importance of a good QB/OL relationship. Obviously if they're close buddies it helps the QB be less prone to shaking in his boots when he drops back.

Probably a reason NFL teams were dissuaded by the douchiness of Connor Cook.

Even The Opening itself is not that great a test of how a QB will play in a real game.

As Harbaugh points out, all these guys are capable and can perform.  He's looking for the guy that can perform without making the big mistake under pressure.

It's kind of hard to make that big mistake at the Opening when nobody is within 5 yards of you, blocking your vision and trying to kill you.

I'm not sold on Martell. The fact that he has committed to 3 schools before his senior season is a red flag IMO. Secondly, he's tiny. He's listed at 5'10 but I wouldn't be surprised if he's even smaller than that. He has some Manziel like qualities for sure, but even JF was a few inches taller and was a bit better athlete.

I don't count the TAMU decommit...

...when you look at that situation, I don't blame anyone for leaving that nonsense.

And until you actually know the kid or know more about him...it's unfair to compare him to Manziel unless you're talking about football only.

So, /s aside, that's pretty neat. For those who missed it, Michigan-themed team Hypercool (~5 MI commits) beat the OSU-themed team Lunarbeast (~6 OSU commits) on a last-second McCaffrey throw, even though DPJ, a five-star receiver and last year's Nike Football Rating National Champion, sat out from an injury.

We would have put him towards the bottom of the list until a defense was added

Imagine that. Evaluating a football player while he's.....you now, playing football against other football players. I think they're on to something.

But my old baseball coach would always yell at us if we were running our wind sprints in practice without our baseball gloves on hand. His theory was how can you chase down a fly or foul ball if you weren't use to running with your glove on. Your post reminded me of him.
