MBSB: Michigan Volleyball upsets #17 Ohio State

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Not a jam-packed day in Michigan Athletics, but a very nice one.

Michigan Volleyball (12-14, 7-9 B1G) pulled out a great upset win over #17 Ohio State at Cliff Keen Arena. They won a close set one, 25-23. In the second set, they blew OSU away winning 25-14. The Buckeyes took the third in a back-and-forth set 3. And in set 4, Michigan pulled out a thriller, winning it 25-23 and taking the match.

Frustrating set 4. Michigan was up 24-17 and nearly lost their sure-thing victory as OSU rallied and pulled the score to 24-23. The star of the match, Caroline Knop, ended OSU's comeback hopes with a kill that sealed the upset.

Knop had a team-high 14 kills and 12 digs with 1 ace while Lexi Dannemiller led Michigan with 5 blocks.

NCAA Tournament hopes look very slim. But this is a good start if they are going to pull off a miracle run. The team has been rocked by injuries this season, causing the disappointing record. Their schedule does not get any easier as they will host the dynasty, Penn State, at Cliff Keen Arena for their next match.

#8 Michigan Wrestling (1-1, 0-0 B1G) went 1-1 today at the EMU Duals in Ypsilanti. They dismantled #24 Ohio University by the score of 28-3 in the first dual of the day with Michigan claiming two upset victories in the 174 and 197 matches-

Future WWE Champion Adam Coon starts his season 2-0. Next up, the Wolverines will face Central Michigan on 11/25 which will be their final dual meet until B1G competition begins in January.

#8 Women's Cross Country and #12 Men's Cross Country both received at-large bids for the NCAA Championships which will be held next Saturday in Terre Haute, IN.

I was in attendance at the MBB game, the Volleyball match and Hockey's game. I'm glad I typed this in between MBB and VB in my car because I'm exhausted.

Only one sport is in action tomorrow...

W Basketball: vs Bucknell (2pm/BTN Plus)

Congrats Wolverines. And on a side note, what makes Coon a future WWE champion? Is that a joke or just a way to say he's wicked awesome? Just curious. Thanks for the weekend update WD!

He's incredible. He was undefeated for most of last year and was responsible for Michigan upsetting #2 Minnesota. He has a career record of 34-5.

He is also one of two team captains. Again, a sophomore. I'd say that speaks volumes about him.

I can only hope we get another Wolverine in WWE. We have a nice history in that department that involes the gold.

Maybe he could challenge this guy some day for the world title and we could have a Little Brown Jug match up of the squared circle with the trophy being the title belt.

I think it's pretty crazy that Brock Lesnar once wrestled at Cliff Keen Arena. Dude is just......a monster.

Brock used to eat there every time he was wrestling in the Detroit area. Always looked like he was having a lot of fun, always had an attractive female with him, and was always super nice and friendly. (Not too mention a good tipper.) I was never a WWE fan, but it was always cool to see a really famous person act respectful to us lowly pizza makers when no cameras or reporters were around. Truly a good guy.

Not a jam packed day?  I just got back from the basketball - volleyball - hockey triple header. It was eleven hours focused on Michigan sports.  The volleyball was great.  It was sold out so the only way I got in was to buy an extra from a group - volleyball hasn't made it to stub hub yet and the guys aren't out on the street buying and selling extras.  Even the student section was full - I think a bunch of students came from the basketball game because they were wearing Maize Rage shirts.  So crowded the locked the student entrance.  They even had a band and a group of twirlers from Saline.  I think the crowd helped even though the crowd was filled with school groups that don't know much about Michigan sports - they were rooting for Michigan but didn't seem to know any cheers.  I think volleyball is the most exciting of the women's sports from a spectator's point of view.  It would be great if they could get a better following.

Thanks for the first hand updates! I have a special interest in volleyball since Abby Cole is from my home town and high school (Grand Haven - see avitar). The B1G is tough, I hope they can make a run and get to the tourney.
