Defense.  Do we play any?  It's like we've never seen a pick-n-roll..  Back-to-back 20+ losses to IU and NU doesn't bode well for where we are as a program.

I just read the Mattison thread along with the Kellen Jones thread and am on somewhat of a high.

So I thought I'd check in on this game thread to bring me back to earth.

Good God, this is depressing.

I think the main problem for us on offense is that all our players are either one-dimensional of zero-point-five-dimensional. Some of them can shoot sometimes. Morris can dribble. I hear rumors that some of our guys can shoot sometimes. That's about it.

1 guy on 4 inside

pathetic

We may not even go to the NIT at this rate

Were gonna keep Coach B 2 seasons to many just like we did Amaker

but you're right with the NIT, it's not gonna happen.

Here's the remaining schedule:

Sat, Jan 22 Minnesota
Thu, Jan 27 at (18) Michigan State
Sun, Jan 30 Iowa
Thu, Feb 3 at (2) Ohio State
Sun, Feb 6 at Penn State
Wed, Feb 9 Northwestern
Sat, Feb 12 Indiana
Wed, Feb 16 at (16) Illinois
Sat, Feb 19 at Iowa
Wed, Feb 23 (20) Wisconsin
Sat, Feb 26 at Minnesota
Sat, Mar 5 (18) Michigan State

I would be surprised if there's 3-4 more wins in that schedule.

I'm not trying to dis, just being realistic.

Our defense has disappeared, too many fouls, bad shot selection, no rebounding and you can see the no confidence look on their faces.

after 08-09.  Firmly on the fence after 09-10, and this year I am thinking that next year needs to be a year where we are competitive for an NCAA tournament birth.  We kept Amaker for 6 years and JB should get the exact same.  This team is super young, and does have talent.  I really wonder if we can win in the big ten with this offense.  what do you think?

That sounds fair. I think the talent level next year should be to a point where we can reasonably expect to be very competitive. Senior Douglass/Novak, Junior Morris, Redshirt Soph Morgan... along with the incoming recruits. I'd be very disappointed if we're not in the running for the tourney.

all that passing inside, backdoor cuts, screens nowhere to be found

since Big ten play looks like this team is dysfunctional and relying only on Individual play besides the 2nd half vs penn state

I love the kid's effort but damn, come on.  We can't be so competitive against #2 and #3 and then crap the bed against Indiana and Northwestern.  Son of a bitch...........

This is embrassing. I mean no disrespect to anybody here but I honestly think we could give some posters on here 28 minutes on air and they wouldn't put up 62 points. Indiana and NW just killed us. We might be lucky to win another game with this defense.

As they hit the tough Big Ten season, but Beilein seems to get them to play better basketball at the end of the season, so we'll see.

What the hell is going on!?! I don't think youth is the only problem, maybe Cuse/Kansas/OSU were flukes, WE SUCK. It would have been nice if the team didn't give us hope in the first place.

Why are facilities keep us from recruiting against the likes of MSU or OSU. I do. But can someone explain to me how we haven't been able to recruit any upper classmen in year 4 that can keep up within 20 of Northwestern? (I mean, have you seen how piss poor their facilities are?)

it looks like even NW has recruited better than Michigan.

You can win a National Championship just by recruiting Southeastern Michigan.  Yet Beilein can't seem to recruit.  It does not matter how great a coach you are if you can't recruit the horses.

Ten years ago, you could win a National Championship by recruiting SE Michigan, but only if you had it all to yourself, as Izzo did after the Ed Martin scandal.  Since the economy has caused a rather large population shift, I don't think there are enough quality players to win it all without some outside help anymore.

I know the Fab Five didn't win it all, but only two of them were from Detroit.  The 1989 team, while it had a lot of Michigan kids, also had Sean Higgins from LA, without whose last second baseline shot against Illinois there would have been no Championship, and East Coast native Rumeal Robinson.

As for JB "not being able to recruit," nobody has really recruited well at Michigan since the scandal, and this year's and next year's class look to be two of the best in Ann Arbor for a long time.

I know that RR's dismissal has so-called "Michigan fans" who like to see coaches fired in a feeding frenzy, but JB deserves another few years.  It's not like he was taking over Duke or UNC when he came to Ann Arbor.

We're not as bad as we look tonight.  We did beat Clemson on the road, Utah at home, and take three top 10 teams down to the wire.  But we're extremely young, and seem a little shell-shocked right now.  Morris really needs to get it together.  He's been a total nonfactor in all our road games in the Big Ten (Wisc, Ind, NW).  He needs to lead this team.

Before the season, I never expected a team with no seniors, no star players, poor outside shooters, no good frontcourt players and average coaching to compete in the Big Ten or win even as many as ten games. I expected Michigan to be favored against fewer than five teams on its schedule and win no more than one or two Big Ten games.  I was hoping to just see some steady improvement.

So, in terms of wins – and close losses against Syracuse, Kansas and Ohio State – this team has exceeded my expectations. Darius Morris could get honorable mention on the the All-Big Ten team; for most of the season Jordan Morgan has been a pleasant surprise; and Tim Hardaway, Jr. has shown some potential to become a good player.

But despite those positives, considering their recent play, it is hard to envision this Michigan team winning enough games to qualify for any post-season tournament this year (or even winning two or three more Big Ten games). Unless there’s considerable improvement between now and the end of the regular season, I’d expect the coaching search to begin in earnest (if it hasn’t already started, despite the too-early contract extension John Beilein received). By now, it should be obvious that Beilein’s recruiting of role players and expecting them to become dependable Big Ten starters isn’t working for him or for Michigan.

Beilein may have to focus his recruiting overseas and find a couple of good outside shooters and a couple of strong frontcourt players in Europe, Africa, Argentina or Brazil to combine with Darius Morris, Jordan Morgan and Tim Hardaway, Jr. (guessing that Blake McLimans and Matt Vogrich will be playing elsewhere next season and that Morris and Hardaway won’t transfer – although it might be tough to convince both of them to stay, especially when there may be other programs willing to offer them the "Udoh Advantage").

I realize that before becoming Michigan's head coach, Beilein had experienced only three losing seasons in 29 seasons as a head coach, but if this becomes Beilein's third losing season out of four at Michigan and he can’t immediately bring in some good overseas talent who won’t consider him to be tainted by his less-than-stellar record as Michigan’s head coach, unless the powers that be are content to let Michigan men's basketball take a back seat to men's hockey, soccer, baseball and club lacrosse, I would guess that Dave Brandon may have to decide that any improvements to Crisler Arena also will have to be accompanied by a coaching change after this season ends.
