I need to see maximum effort, specifically defensively, and smart offense. Let's get back to the basics of competing and understanding how to run a fucking offense

Maybe it's because I don't often frequent open threads, but I'm trying to figure out how a first half where we are up by 20 (and saw the first mini signs of life from Kam Chatman) has a majority of super negative comments.

This is sort of similar to the football team playing a really bad FCS team and being up 17-7 at halftime.  Yeah, technically they're up a couple scores, and I'm sure you could pick out a couple guys playing well.  But when you consider the competition and think about all the plays that weren't made (that would hurt us against better competition,) some level of criticism would be warranted.

Delaware State is one of the worst D1 teams there is.  They've yet to really make any kind of play offensively, and aside from one pretty good blocked shot they haven't done anything special defensively, either.  Any halfway decent major conference team would have this game more or less over at halftime.

That said, if you've watched this team in previous games, I'm not sure how anything you've seen today could be considered surprising.  This is basically what I'd expect in this one.  With a healthy Walton, we'd likely have it even more firmly in hand.

I'm not sure what world where a 20 pt halftime lead in basketball is equal to a 10 pt lead in football. We outscored them in the paint 20-0. They only rebounded 20% of their misses (off of ugly shots that produce weird bounces). They didn't get a FT. I'm not saying this team is going to the Final Four or even the tournament, but to be displeased with that first half performance (I'm not bringing the 2nd half so far into account) is to fundamentally misunderstand basketball and how Beilein teams have performed against this competition usually. I can point out many better UM teams who struggled much more against equivalent competition (Concordia game from a couple years ago, 2008 team against Saginaw Valley, etc.).

Honestly, a pretty meh half.  DSU is AWFUL.  They can get any look they want out there any time they're patient, and defensively all they really have to do is try to avoid giving away any free open looks, because there's nothing going on offensively that is going to create easy opportunities.

It concerns me that it was an 11 pt game with 4 minutes left in the half.  I mean, it's no greater concern than watching them get shelled by three different non-conference opponents.  It's at least been nice to see them attack the basket a bit more late in the first half, but like I said, they can get anything they want against this defense.  Will they be patient and poised enough to play aggressively against better teams?

has done nothing to alleviate my growing fears of a LONG season ahead...Its a low energy team...We are really going to miss Spike and his hustle and energy

I really hope Kam gets going. He's been one of my favorite players because of his skillset. If he gets his confidence and really attacks I think he can be really good. I hate seeing people rip on him because he has a ton of potential and he's still really young.
