I only started one other MBB game thread this year and it was for Illinois and that one turned out well. Hopefully twice is still a charm.
I feel that Michigan is going to destroy Illinois today.
Let's Go Blue!
I will happily take another 30 point demolishing this afternoon.
Anyone have a stream beside btn2go? Please?
Nevermind, here is the link for anyone else stuck at work like me.
Lets just keep from starting extremely slow and allowing Illinois to stay in the game longer than they should.
Does anybody have a stream link? Direct TV customer here stuck at work.....
first row sports
Also, if you can't get a video link, use TuneIn Radio for the audio.
It's an ESPN game so it's on ESPN3.
WTF?? We cannot watch this on watchespn?
I'm watching it on watchespn
Edit: just crapped out
It's not working on my computer, but the ap seems to work fine.
And not on hbo2go, either. Sucks.
What radio station can i listen to this on in SE MI? Ill be drivign during the game.
950 AM, everywhere else see link
Yea, let's beat the snot out of these guys again, mmmkay.
I can't see another 30 point drubbing but if our guys do what they do and hit a few shots we should take this one.
Helluva way to start he game
Let's see if Illinois can keep it within 30 this time.
Damn that was beautiful!
That leads to the sweet Stauskus lay in
3s not dropping
Ball's falling short and the refs aren't calling anything. If the refs keep that up and we adjust with the shot, we're fine.
Nik hot early
My internet provider/cable doesn't support watchespn. Anyone have a stream?
GR3 aggressiveness up 10fold last 5-6 games
That was the best drive to the basket of his career!
Dang. Did Morgan just get a call under the basket? It's a good day.
GR3 is very impressive.
Good start not flat
The least they could do is have a decent link to watch. I can't get through.
is WatchESPN crapping out for anyone else right now?
So far so good for WatchESPN for me.
edit: now working.
If this team beats us, I'll be shocked. They have next to zero offensive skill and we are getting plenty of good looks so far. Just need to start knocking them down. I'm seeing a repeat of the last time we played them.
How many games has he scored the 1st basket? Seems like the game plan.
How do the unis looks? More importantly, how does the team look today?
can anyone share a link that has the game streamed? Can't get ESPN3 either
Has been the dapper don on the sideline this year
Vinnie Zak Irvin Johnson
More than just a shooter according to Dakitch.
Comes in sniping right away
for those that live in countries where firstrowsports.com won't work (Korea for me)
Irvin - 1 for 1
Is it just me or does Horford always hedge wayyyyy too hard? Seems like Morgan knows the timing of when to get back a lot better.
Yes exactly this, he's consistently too far out.
Illinois feasting inside
I know we emphasize that our Bigs hedge on the screens but, it seems like Horford always hedges out too far and it kills the defensive rotation.
Thinking the exact thing
Horford isn't as quick as Morgan, so if he gets caught out there the recovery isn't going to happen as fast. It may be worth backing off on the hedges a bit when he's out there, just IMHO.
Egwu is eating Horford up.
The whole game stops for a contact lens problem?
Best uniforms in awhile.
3pt % coming back to earth from the last meeting, which is to be expected. Gotta keep attacking the basket. Stauskas is penetrating but everyone else a bit passive so far.
low scoring game. We've missed a couple of open jumpers.
That one line up that was in just before the contact lens issue seemed pretty disjointed.
Illinois benefitting from having a game under their belts already. We look a little tight.
LeVert a bit cold today, hopefully he heats up a bit.
Just a player
GR3 a totally different player here last 2.5 weeks
Can only watch on gamecast, with watchespn not working. Why is Illinois getting a ton of layups? Bad on ball defense? Transition?
To me, it looks like they keep running right past our defense. A few times they've just gone around the defenders right to the rim. This is disconcerting.
I was going to ask the same thing. All of Illinois's shots are at the rim...why so many layups?
Slow feet on D. We are not awake yet. Dead atmosphere.
or think a vanquished opponent's gonna come back the same.
If they didn't strategize they wouldn't be in this conference.
If anything, we should treat 'em like they been vaccinated. Gonna come harder, change up their game.
I think we've been startled awake now -- damn was that alarm buzzer loud -- hopefully adrenaline keeps pumping. If so , shouldn't have any trouble winning.
Bad on ball defense....they r driving to the bucket without much trouble...
We seem to be afraid of their terrible 3-ball, so they fake it then duck under and drive. The refs aren't calling much, but we're still playing defense like we're afraid to foul.
They're getting penetration up top and we aren't really contesting at the rim. No true shot blockers on this team with Mitch down unfortunately.
watchespn started working for me around the 11minute mark.
Why oh why do we let ballhandlers knife right ot the bucket... how many layups have we given up in a half court set so far...
tighten up the d
we literally can not stop dribble penetration, giving easy points to bad offenses is how you lose games you shouldn't in the tourney.
Morgan gets slapped and hacked more than anyone and NEVER gets a call.
I've watched him get pushed down low a few times when he had good positioning
To Illinois credit they are attacking inside relentlessly which is where we are weak.
Three of the team just standing around in the lane and no one stepped out to stop that lay up. I know it shouldn't surprise me anymore, but dang.
Kind of a slow game. M is getting owned off the dribble right now, though.
Our shots need to fall because we are not winning anything with our D.
Caris has missed a few short floaters or this game would look differently. Playing about average on offense, but giving up too many easy drives on defense.
Not watching the game but it seems like defense was optional today.
Game still on!
it ain't over till the *very* last second -- don forget Kansas in the tourney last year!
*this* is when tourney teams are forged...
For all the bad D if he hit those open 3's we'd be up by few possessions.
We're playing great. No one should be complaining.
Beilein is clearly going to get quirky tournament lineup to save legs. Stauskas and Morgan were out early with no foul. He's basically using Irvin to rest the legs of GRIII, LeVert AND Stauskas.
I'm not looking for a game anywhere close to the game a couple weeks ago. Basically I'm just looking for some execution and for us to make that 10-0 run when we can and hold it throughout the game.
equals weird guys?
stay in front of somebody...
I find it funny that Burke could get tackled on a drive to teh hoop and never get the call and Nik (almost) always gets the call.
Yeah, it's like they thought Burke is so tough he does not need any help.
Wish he would've passed that or gone up stronger, but the foul might pay off later.
Feel fairly confident about today's game, and while I agree that rest at this point would be ideal, late March holding more potential jewels, still...
I don't think we can afford to slack, take for granted, or give up this game. Would not look good.
They're gonna come out roaring, seeking revenge & a chance -- it's last gasp survival for them -- we have to be ready to fight.
It's also a good chance to firm up on D. before full-on Tournament Madness.
And Illinois keeps getting lay ups, we will lose this game.
There you go boy
hopefully that will calm things down a bit. Illinois can't afford to get behind by much
teams'll figure it out
GR3 END TO END WOW
Could have been +1, too.
HELL YES GRIII!
Is playing like a different player today.
Best play of Glenn's career
Open it up . . .
espn. Opened a new screen and it worked.
GRIII just flew past everyone and Egwu got plastered by his own guy.
Did he get the foul call? Looked like a foul. Great drive by GR3, he has been a completely different player lately.
I like when GR3 plays aggresively like this!
I've never seen him like this before. I love it.
Listed as being on ESPN2, but it is the damn ACC tournament. Of course I didn't find that out until now when I turned on the DVR. What the hell?
Illini defender hacks own player....gets hurt
Especially as of late.
This team is going to go as far as GR3 takes it. If he plays soft and with no energy, we won't make it off the first weekend. If he plays like this, we may return to the Final Four.
He's the ultimate X-factor, he's the only player on the team that you don't know what you're going to get.
Looks like Horford having one of those games again.
Kind of a good thing that he picked up another foul.
How so? It's only the first half. Michigan needs Morgan and Horford.
Egwu is hurt
Just has to foul something
Bad jump and couldn't get out the way.
The worst offense in the Big Ten has now scored on 7 of their last 9 possessions. Come on.
30-23 Michigan with 4:46 left in the 1st
That "and one" foul call was pretty damn weak.
Woefully timed jump costs us 3 points. Not ideal...
Horford - illegal screen
This team needs to get it together defensively , illinois is a poor shooting team there is no reason they should be able to get into the lane. If they are hitting jump shots fine but our gaurds can not let them turn the corner.
...in the game of basketball about offensive players jumping into defensive players. It's in the rule book, it's called principal of verticality, and it doesn't only apply to offensive players.
This is Illinois pace - 60 pt game. We want 75+
No, we want to play defense. How bout that.
We can easily get a few more baskets.
We're not going to blow them out...
#1 - they're playing for their lives.
#2 - we embarrassed them last time.
#3 - Beilein isn't playing his usual rotation.
We just have to execute and win this game by 7-10 points and take the win.
Don't think for a second this is going to be a blowout again...Beilein is going to get all the rest he can get for the starters.
I don't think anyone is expecting a blowout, but there have been some real lapses in defense with some big mistakes on both ends. We could be up by more. We don't have to blow them out, but this game doesn't need to be close, either.
We're on pace to score 76 points and we've executed very well. We're not a great defensive team and we've never been so nothing that has happened has been surprising. It's not like we're making them look like an offensive juggernaut. They're making some tough shots, give some credit. That said, it's not like they hung 40+ on us that half.
I expect we'll come out of the gates in the 2nd half with a better defensive effort. I'm not sure why it takes the team so long to adjust.
Illinois take outside shots. This is way too easy for them.
Illini talking us to the rack and hitting shots
Zero defense being played by Michigan. Illinois is getting into the lane at will.
Isn't that the second time that GR3 has been hit on the arm shooting?
Two awful calls back to back with Walton going up for a rebound. And it's cost us 6 points wtf
the game through ESPN's wonderful Gamcast... this blows. I should have subscibed to Xfinity.
I'm watching through xfinity and it sucks too. It keeps blacking out and it's really slow. I've been behind the whole game.
This kind of defense will get us booted in the second round. Just awful.
Just like our bad defense did last year?
This defense displayed this game is worse than anything we played in the tourney.
And I am sure looking at the play of this single game is an excellent predictor for our future games.
I never said it was. I said this is the kind of defense that, if played in the tournament, would get us bounced early.
Offense is actually doing about as well as they did in Champaign. The difference is Illinois isn't missing all their shots this time.
I think John Groce just showed the pangs of regret on his face after that three from Caris.
Nice rebound Morgan!
Nik is cold hearted
That was a lazy ass pass. Lazy.
Because Illinois was crossing the imaginary line.
We are not good at getting the ball in from out of bound plays
NOT a lazy ass dunk however
Stating the obvious, but Stauskas is so freaking good. Wow. It's just fun to watch him play.
Wtf was that pass? Maybe should've pulled up for a J.
I hate when Nik whines for foul even when one should've been called
Come out strong in the second half.
Up five at the half with a so-so first half performance. I'll take it.
Anyone else as sick of the "turnovers to touchdowns" meme as me?
1 offensive rebound all game
Nik should've just pulled up for a 15 footer there
describe the dunk? ...Gamcast just said he dunked with an assist from Walton. I am imagining it was on a fastbreak.
Steal, passout to half court and monster slam
It was. walton found him running free and the pass looked a bit long, but Caris picked it up and went to the hoop without a dribble and slammed it with one hand
that sounds sexy. Thanks
...it wasn't that impressive until you take that into account.
LeVert screaming downcourt, great feed in stride, LeVert slams it down with the left hand!
Halftime: 38-33 Michigan
looks a little like Mr. Burns, no?
I can see that. With his stache (which I don't know if he has one right now because I cant see any faces) he reminds me of a french butler from the 1930's. I am trying to think of who I am trying to compare him to. Also, Jim Furyk.
I'm A okay with this half...
We're never going to be a great defensive team, so those complaining about that should probably stop watching Michigan this season.
We're rotating guys like crazy - expected, Beilein likes to get a lot of rest in the first game.
We're executing on offense for the most part.
Can't ask for much more. Illinois is playing better, give them credit. It's not like we've got the worlds greatest defense. Illinois is attacking and making plays, more power to them. We're doing the same and we're up 5.
We can't let them hang around too long because the crowd will get in it and they always root for the underdog. But I expect us to be up 10-12, hold on to it at the end by 8-9 and get a "boring" W and go back to the hotel and rest for the remainder of the day. Nothing wrong with that.
There is a difference between not being a good defensive team and letting a team get to the basket at will. Our guys are athletic, staying in front of their guys on defense is about playing intelligent and sound defense, doesn't have to be spectacular but what went on in the first half is inexcusable.
They have 33 points. Relax.
This would be a double digit lead, except that we haven't contested a shot since that Morgan block in the opening couple of minutes. Guys are scoring inside way too easily, and there were even a couple short jumpers that were completely undefended. I realize that we're a better offensive team than defensive, sure. But just one example, when Walton got posted up at one point, his man just turned and put up a shot maybe eight feet from the basket and Derrick literally just stood there. No jump, no hand in the air, just sort of casually turned his head and watched the ball drop through the net. There were multiple possessions like that this half. It's amazing how much better you can be defensively simply by putting effort into it. I don't expect them to be elite, just you know.... look like you're working out there, at least.
I'm sure we'll tighten it up some this half. These guys are competitors and want to win this game.
I'm less concerned about a guy hitting a turnaround jumper from 10 feet than I am the 4 or 5 straight dribble drives which let to uncontested layups.
Michigan shooting 52% (13-25), 6-13 from 3, 6-6 from the line
Illinois shooting 48% (14-29), 3-9 from 3, 2-3 from the line.
Illinois 16 rebounds - Michigan 12
People still can't spell one of our best players names correctly.
I'll work harder, coach.
Michigan eFG% - 64.00%
Michigan OREB% - 8.33%
Michigan free throw rate -24.00%
Michigan turnover % - 9.79%
Illinois eFG% - 53.45%
Illinois OREB% - 31.25%
Illinois free throw rate - 10.34%
Illinois turnover % - 16.52%
Michigan PPP - 1.29, compared to Illinois at 1.06. We held Illinois to 0.88 PPP for the game in Champaign.
...just have to give Illinois some credit. They're making some great plays and some tough shots. I mean it is what it is. We're still up 5 and at no point in the half did it feel like they were in control or had momentum.
There are no style points. Just calmly win the game by 10 and move on.
I'll say this for Illinois: They have made a concerted effort to get the ball inside. They're not settling nearly as often as is typical for them. They would have won a couple more games this year if they'd played this aggressively all the way through.
Why wouldn't you when you're getting layups every time. Not exactly rocket science. Man we miss Mitch inside. After re-watching last years run, that's becoming more and more obvious.
layups aren't tough shots
edited to add I know i've been negative in this thread and I think we win this game going away, but there is no way we beat any team we play in the sweet sixteen on playing this kind of defense.
Walton's two fumbled rebounds have cost us six points.
Alum, we're ahead of your pace.
Like I said, relax my man...the game is pretty much going as anyone realisitcally could've planned.
Yes the spurt late helped. Illinois started playing offense like they can
For folks who can't get on WatchESPN:
to grey hair and velcro sneakers.
I thank you.
1050 WTKA online constant commercials?
It's been 25 minutes and no talkie.
WTKA is NOT allowed to stream the audio per university rules, even though they're the official voice of the university, which is just a stupid rule.
Thanks, I did not know that. That IS stupid and I am writing a letter to someone.
Eh...fuck work. I left at noon to watch the BTT all day.
Best post in thread
We'll win by 20 again if refs keep calling hand checks
...and even if they do, we should win by 10 points.
Caris is just money.
If you have Comcast- instead of going through watchespn, just go through the comcast site directly, sign in and watch live tv.
Nice hustle Walton
That ball was clearly deflected by an Illinois player.
He should've dunked it on both Illinois guys.
That's what I was expecting him to do and it would have been glorious.
Awesome Dakitch move on the bench just then
When people get our best bench celebrator's name wrong. Dakich
Dockich isn't that hard to remember.
It's hilarious. I think he knows people like it now, so he does it on purpose.
I guess a ball can magically change directions on it's own now.
I expect it to go up 5 and back to 10 for most of the half...
Good post move
Nice play there.
I saw Andrew...and then they acknowledged it!
Dakich getting the love, right after a great celebration following J-Mo's shot.
That was a bad call. Wasn't foul
in 3, 2, 1, ....
He wasn't shooting yet you idiots
Andrew's highlight video just got a mention
Awesome. Ace's Dakich bench celebration video gets mentioned on air just one day after creation.
We helped to created an ESPN meme!
Battling for bench clown supremacy. Love it!
Gotten a couple good defensive plays this half by swiping balls before guys can go up. If you're not a great shot blocker, there are other ways to interfere with a guy. Good to see. Loved LeVert's charge, too. More active this half. Great job so far.
Just turned the game on at work :)
The Wolverine Way? Really?
Right now we're way more focused. Looks like we got more hustle too
This team is RIGHT there with those guys...I love that THEY love playing with each other, they have fun, they play hard, and now with GRIII playing the way he should...they get the most of their ability. You can't ask for more. No matter if you're 0-30 or 30-0, those are some of the things you always want to see in a team.
Dakich is on the Big 10 First Team Celebration team (coaches and media)
Dakich video needs update now with that pregame dance.
I want one of those shirts. Much better than WE ON
seed is going to come down to who does better in the BTT between us and Wisconsin. Once the favorite consolidates I think the Big Ten gets a 1 seed.
Skinny guys a freak
LeVert has really picked it up. Glad to see him doing it against Illinois.
If Groce is gonna zone us, the game is over.
Don't EVER hesitate.
Lol yes Rice go ahead and start talking when you're down double digits.
Dang it. Nik just wasn't quite set after not shooting off the bat. That woulda crushed Illinois. Now instead Morgan has his third. Oh well. Time for Horford to step it up from his play in the 1st half.
I'm convinced Dakich is not only aware of his bench celebrity, but now intentionally feeds the cult of Dakich. I think he does so sincerely, and I have no problem with it.
They just talked about the video.
Anyone else think that Dick'd commercial was really bad?
How does a guy go from 158 lbs to 185 lbs over the summer and appear to be much quicker at the same time? Sanderson is a magician.
He was 158 when he arrived on campus.
Did he just airball a layup...
Hedge and get out the way
Lets go, Mizzou
That was an airball! And GRIII pass to Stauskas!
Too many early shots right now. It would be one thing if they were lay ups, but we don't need the long shots.
This looks like the first round GR3 scouts were talking about
Beilein saying that he wasn't coach of the year - that he voted for Miles - another in a long line of examples of the type of leader Beilein is. What a man - what a leader - what a coach.
(and my coach of the year)
If we could rebound at all today we would be running away.
I think I've seen Spike hit that exact same shot every other game.
How was that not an offensive push off?
You simply could not ask for better defense. LeVert did EVERYTHING you could've asked. The guy pushes off, creates enough space to get the pass.
But that was amazing defense and defensive position.
More weird lineups...like I said, we're not going to blow them out. But expect it to hang around 10 and we'll be fine.
Holy cow we need to get Max out of the game.
Winning and resting the 2 big guys is huge
When max is in the game...it's like playing 5v4.
Way to support a guy who's playing just fine in a game we're winning by 10.
Max has been in the game for about 3 minutes and Dakich hasn't talked about his calves once.
Or a layup.
Coach's no foul philosophy has worked, but I'd love to see Max come in and knock some heads
Beilein is playing weird guys.
He took Morgan and Stauskas out with no fould with 17 minutes in the first half.
He also subbed LeVert and GRIII out early.
Gotta rest people and cut down the minutes if your gonna make a BTT run back to back to back games for a big guy can be exhausting.
This is fun. How can anyone NOT like Michigan athletics? I will never understand it.
He's lost on offense
Where was the foul?
Many and 1's are they gonna get
As many as it takes for the refs to keep them in the game? /s
All these are not fouls
He's got a quiet 18 so far
We've got to keep driving to the hoop. Refs are calling contact. Let's take advantage
Can't keep giving up penetration so easily, just getting wrecked off the dribble.
Nik didn't move once that possession
Getting good looks. Just not hitting right now. This one will be tight.
gotta step it up on defense..they just driving through us every possession
Refs trying to keep Illinois in it.
It sure looks that way when they get touch fouls called going to the hoop and we don't.
Gone from a 13 point lead to 4. Not good.
Not a good series right now. Come on guys let's get it together.
Why start slowing down the offense with 10 minutes left? Just passing around the perimeter for 20 seconds without even attacking.
The Scheme The Scheme The Scheme
Foul calls even out and we got this.
Having watched the Syracuse game the other day, this looks incredibly familiar.
Horford is having an awful game, he's really not contributing at either end.
