Don't you mean Clemson? Syracuse was last week.
MBB UM/Clemson Open Thread
I think he's trying to change the results of the 'Cuse game, but I may be wrong.
What happened to you?
but when nick lachey got engaged i gained 15 pounds of sadness weight
Thanks for this...
Geaux_Blue might ask to have his own thread deleted. (And didn't we already have an ACC challenge open thread?)
at this point you're just whining. about a thread in which random guys lusted after ann hathaway no less
After you've spent the week "hating Michigan fans" and complaining about the value of every thread. But I'm glad you think your stupid celebrity references have more value than other ones.
was Conan that put it over the edge.
This is my new Background :)
Let's go blue!
lets see what Michigan can do! Go Blue!
novak to morgan
THE Tim Hardaway Jr.
I'm impressed with the way we're rebounding on the defensive end. This is the one stat (D rebound %) that I think will dictate wins/losses this year.
EDIT: Why did I say that?
You're right they've been rebounding well... but that last possession... agh.
It is almost like the timing is off on our rebounds. I think I just saw two rebounds roll off of Novack's hands in that one position.
This rebounding problem.... think it's going to happen all year.
So, this is the first time I've watched the team play, I like them. I know they are young, and are going to have growing pains, but they have the potential to be real good as they grow. It is weird too, we have big guys!
Lets go BLUE!
Gotta pad this lead. Clemson's not going to shoot 15% all game.
i like the new adidas bball jerseys. when do they become available?
I agree. I was just looking for them but no luck yet.
The blue uni's are very sharp looking. I think they are a definite improvement over past Adidas bball uniforms.
"bailed out on a foul call"?
In what world was that not a foul?
Impressive performance thus far. Gotta keep building on this lead because Clemson is missing some open looks.
And I have to say that I kind of like what I'm seeing. I think they have some nice young pieces and players that could fit together pretty well. I like the backcourt with Hardaway Jr and Morris and Novak is certainly not spectacular but he doesnt kill you (kind of like a poor poor man's JJ Redik). Up front theyve been getting killed on the boards so they obviously need some size but I like Morgan, he actually looks like a power forward which it seems like it's been a while since Michigan has had that.
but this team is a lot of fun to watch....definitely excited to watch these kids grow together. Go Blue.
and playing tough on the road.
The performance thus far is even more impressive considering that Clemson is one of the most difficult road environments in the ACC.
We are playing some great defense thus far!
Smote does a beautiful George Gervin impression. Maybe this is our night.
Nice Evan. We are fired up or Clemson flat?
Smotrycz has been amazing so far in this game. Offensive rebounding, 3 point shooting, pump fake and drive to the basket. Very impressive.
Metrics = Gordon Hayward.
Is this a high school team we're playing?
They are looking good right now! Im very surprised! They are going to surprise us a few times this year I'm thinking.
Someone want to explain to me why were not excited to watch this team? I understand how young we are, but you can definitely see flashes of potential that bode well for the future. This team can make noise in the Big Ten within the next couple years.
As they get older, they are going to be nasty. Im very excited.
I didn't get to see the tourney this last weekend but did they play anything like this?
In the first half against Syracuse, kind of. In the second half of that game and in the UTEP game, there was a lot less movement and a lot of bricks from downtown.
This team plays with so much effort it's a lot of fun to watch. Definitely exceeding my preseason expectations.
Favorite quote of the game so far:
"... and they love to do a lot of backdoor stuff, too."
The passing has greatly improved since last year. They're looking good.
smotrycz had two shots in a row that made go WHAT? The first one was truly amazing. It was like a fake shot, fake pass, pump fake, then made the shot..... All in the air.
jerai is a cool name.
Smotrycz trails Clemson 16-15.
They are shooting the lights out.
Smotrycz and Hardaway are going to be the next big studs on the team. Both already play like sophomores. Evan can't miss right now and he's supplementing his hot shooting with solid rebounding (solid by our standards, at least).
I can't believe I'm stuck writing a giant final paper right now instead of watching this game. Keep up the updates, comrades, it makes for great reading when my short attention span for writing runs out & I need a quick break!
I am loving these easy layups.
the future potential of these youg guys. They seem to play as a team. They seem to be energetic on defence. They are going to be really good.
Their D is approaching a purely theoretical level. Come to think of it, so is their offense.
Michigan is 60% on FGs. Huge!
I kind of wish we were in the ACC. They play such a more open brand of basketball.
I'm with you on this one. Watching ACC and Big East basketball is just more enjoyable. It's hard to argue with the Big Ten's overall success, but sometimes it's a grind to watch.
A little bit of sloppy play as the half is coming to a close. Let's hope this isn't a reflection of the rest of the game.
I've always wanted one of those annoying white guys like Duke and Purdue always seem to have. Metrics! We has them!
I like Jon Horford. He's way undersized, but he seems to make a lot of nice hustle plays - and he's not afraid to throw that body around.
I like Horford's potential. Smotrycz, Morgan, Horford is a solid frontcourt for the next four years.
Michigan... end of half.
24 points in the paint!
Nice! Ok, I gotta write like crazy during halftime so I can justify a break to watch the second half!
Great first half boys! Looking damn good out there tonight.
Morris really has taken on a new role this year, he is noticeably more confident with his game. Great first half for this young team.
Morris and Smotrycz 10 and 13 pts. They are both playing very well.
Morris's first-half line is impressive: 10 pts, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover.
man i cannot get this game to load on espn3...is anyone else having problems.
And that's exactly what happened last game I tried to watch on ESPN3.com. But it seems to have kept working once it did. (not to tempt the evil eye!)
atdhe.net has two streams, I'm watching the first one and it's working just fine. ESPN3 was being a pain so I gave up.
I remember listening to an MGoPodcast with Tim in which he said this team might surprise people because the style of play Beilen prefers didn't mesh with the skills of Manny, especially defensively. After catching this first half, this team looks lightyears better than at any time last year, so maybe there is some truth to the idea this team could compete for an NIT bid.
Everyone needs to take a break from thinking/worrying/ranting about our football coach and enjoy this game
This team is going to be really, really good in 2 years. I mean, Top 10 good. Only guys who graduate after next season are Novak (SAD FACE) and Douglas (not so upset). A 2012-13 starting five of Morris, Hardaway, Metrics, Morgan, and Brundrige(????) plus a couple of other 4-star prospects.
VS fashion for all those wishing to watch Katy Perry perform due to their love for her amazing voice
Yeah, amazing voice... we'll go with that.
There are two things I like about that woman. But I can't put my hands, er... finger, on them, er...it.
thing. I had a new one that fit the criteria, but it doesn't work.
Was it sufficiently awesome? If not, that could be your problem.
with a winged cap, so you be the judge
Best half of basketball by this team all season. They are executing to perfection out there. I was really pleased to see Vogrich take it to the rack strong early in the game.
Even with his slender size Horford seems to be a much better interior defender than both Mclimas and Morgan.
So not one mention of the game by the ESPN halftime crew but they can spend a whole segment breaking down Duke/MSU.....tragic!
About the team so far, I think, is Morris. He looks great, like a different player from last year. Bodes well not only for his future but for coach b's talent development skills. If only a couple ofnthe freshman can make a Morris like improvement by next year we are going to be pretty good.
They just spent an entire segment breaking down the MSU-Duke game and didn't spend one minute discussing the game that people are actually tuned in to watch.
I understand that MSU-Duke is probably the biggest game of the season so far, but is it to much to ask for them to spend two minutes pretending to care about the Michigan-Clemson game?
Let's Go Blue!
Smotrycz needs to take a cue from Stu and clean up a bit. National television...
Let's not give up another 13-0 run to start the half. Not something we want to become a trend.
It's been avoided. This team is fun to watch when they're on.
Huge shot by Smotrycz. (I know that might be silly to say up 10 with 16 to go, but it was.)
No, you're right. We were losing momentum in the toughest arena in the ACC. Huge shot.
Michigan... 15:32 remaining
Dumars, Horford and Hardaway are mentioned after the break...(I know, too easy).
Is anyone else watching this game online and finding the UPS commercial song incredibly annoying? I'm shipping fedEX next time b/c of that commercial.
This is uncomfortably reminiscent of the last time we played Clemson (2009 tourney).
That game was more uncomfortable than it had to be but we did win. I'll take the same result today.
clemson cheerleaders. rawr.
Clemson figured out how to shoot and adjusted to faceguard the hell out of us this half.
Sure looked like Morris got fouled on that last drive there. Better get things settled & get some flow back to the offense before Clemson really heats up.
would really help us out... it's a lot easier to defend jump shooters from 20 feet than ball movement from 10
Morgan answering your request with a couple nice follows. :)
Couldn't help but think of this:
We are playing very aggressive ball. Exactly what I like to see in this young team.
49-39 8:22 to go
51-39 Michigan. Under 8 minutes.
Jordan Morgan getting two big baskets
24 Jennings on clemson looks like Jalen Rose
Wow - good call. He really does.
Make it three
He's taking over.
He's playing his role in the offense really well in this stretch. Hanging out by the rim, cleaning up the glass, making the easy buckets.
He's more polished than I was expecting. He's shown some nifty footwork. I love the thought of having him four years. Every championship team has a guy like him.
We look a real basketball team. Oh Holy Jesus, let it be true.
Is Clemson any good?
so not too bad of a performance if we can hang on, especially on the road.
and especially because Clemson has won something like 50 of their last 52 at home.
Am i wrong in saying this or do we have a good d this year? Weve got some size, but can shoot outside
The team definitely seems more active than last year. I'm sure they'll be ground up by some of the more talented, bigger teams in the B10, but this team definitely looks better than last year defensively. Clemson isn't anything great, but keeping them under 40 points late into the 2nd half is impressive against against AQ team.
J Mo the garbage man
Sounds good to me, Oscar the Grouch ! (muppet-esque)
Clemson is not a good team. We are still bottom 3 in Big Ten.
They certainly don't seem to be very good but it remains a very tough place to play and this is still an impressive performance from such a young team
Jesus. Fucking. Christ.
Can you not just be happy?
3pt - 4-18
FT - 9-13
Reb - 29
T/O - 9
Pts in Paint - 30!
I love that we're doing this without shooting well from 3.
Isn't it nice to watch a U-M sporting event without getting the Fear? It's surprisingly refreshing. Hey-o low expectations.
I'm just happy to forget about all the football coaching "controversy" for a while. Nice change of pace.
Sssh! This is why we can't have nice threads. But yeah, that's what I was trying to hint at.
Love the way this team is competing on the defensive end especially. If they can play this hard every night for 40 minutes they'll be in a lot of ballgames in the big 10
Douglass with a Novak-esque play there to steal a possession!
Loved the hustle by Douglas on that out of bounds run.
Just wanted to shove it in ESPN's face. Here's their predictions for the game
MICHIGAN AT CLEMSON (ESPN2, 9 ET)
Bilas: Clemson -- The Tigers are at home, and Michigan hasn't won away from home.
Brennan: Clemson -- Michigan might not be as bad as we thought, but it is not good enough to beat a capable Clemson team, whose only loss was a one-point neutral-court defeat to ODU.
Fraschilla: Clemson -- Early returns about new coach Brad Brownell are positive.
Gottlieb: Michigan -- Searching for an upset here, the 1-3-1 proves tough to tame. The Wolverines appear a bit better than expected, though they will suffer in conference.
Katz: Clemson -- The Tigers, regardless of coach, are too tough at home against similar-level teams.
Leung: Clemson -- Tigers coach Brad Brownell is fitting right in and has enough weapons to win this one.
Lunardi: Clemson -- The Wolverines are a long way from being able to win at Littlejohn.
O’Neil: Clemson -- The Wolverines have done little to prove they're over what ailed them last season.
Williams: Clemson -- After losses to both Syracuse and UTEP, I don't see the Wolverines bouncing back at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Eat it haters!
Don't hate the player (or fomer player) hate the washed up coaches whose incoherent ramblings are paid for by the 4 letter network.
Dude! You can't post this before the game is over. Don't you remember what happened when somebody posted that Auburn was going down!?
The Tigers are at home, and Michigan hasn't won away from home.
Didn't they beat a team in Europe? Sure, it didn't count, but certainly away from home.
Just noticed C.J. Lee behind the Michigan bench. Good to see he's still involved with the program.
They are playing well in a tough place. Finially a couple threes from Novak, he shooting so bad this year. They really need him to hit just a few more shots each game.
It'd be nice to be a bit more consistent w/ our 3 point shooting. Don't feel comfortable with them jacking it up all the time. 25% isn't valid enough to pull the trigger out there.
And what happened to Stu Douglass? I remember when he went large against UConn. Practically standing at mid-court draining them. I WANT THAT STU BACK!!
Michigan - 3:54 Remaining
I'd be dead if I drank every time the PBP guy said "one and done." As if we needed more ways to use that idiom.
Totally just read that as PBR guy.
Not something you see often in a team so young. A 15pt lead at Clemson is no small feat for a team with no experience. I don't care if Clemson is that good or not. We could actually be pretty decent in a year or two after we mature.
What the hell kind of name for an arena is Littlejohn Colosseum? Is everyone required to talk in autotune?
No. You have to win a quarterstaff battle to gain entry. Clemson is old school, son!
That's a joke of a call. Charging in that instance, please. Block all the way.
Good to see crappy referees exist in the ACC as well.
- Morgan looks pretty good
- This team is dangerous if the shots fall. Not exactly something I'd like to rely on, but, it can't be as bad as last year in the shooting department, right?
- The graphic that showed UM with 0 Seniors and 13 Underclassmen was like bad deja vu with the football team. When does this "Michigan has a young team" nonsense stop? Just fix it,already.
When does this "Michigan has a young team" nonsense stop? Just fix it,already.
You do understand the whole "aging" thing right? As time goes by, people get older.
We should have a time machine. I've seen them in a lot of movies, why don't we get one of the ones they used? I blame Rodriguez.
Oh, is that how it works? Thanks a lot, princess. You're deep.
You two just need to make out and get it over with. This sexual tension is killing all of us.
Beilein has had 2 full recruiting classes and he got to hack one together really fast and got Stu and Zack out of a seemingly impossible situation (he also got poor Ben Cronin).
The difference between Beilein and RR is people realize that Beilein stepped into an absolute buzz saw of a situation because our record showed it and our facilities were horrific while RR stepped into a situation where the previous year's record had been good enough. Also people just care more about football than basketball so they're more impatient.
All of these charging calls are pushing it a bit. And the blocking call that just lead to the Clemson and-one was a bit sketchy.
"Michigan does not have a lot of good ballgame, they have a pretty good ballgame"
WTF?! Looks very good today!
I think they said
"Michigan does not have a lot of good ballhandlers, they have pretty good ballhandlers"
My mistake... thanks!
He was referring to Michigan's young ball handlers.
Like the win, Go Blue!
is a complete idiot.
I may disagree with some of his basketball opinions, but I generally don't think of Harvard Law grads as idiots.
He's probably not a complete idiot, but his ACC homerism near the end was fairly annoying. I was surprised to see that it was him when they pulled out to a shot of the commentators, as he usually is pretty balanced.
Any reason for this claim? Because his JD from Harvard would suggest otherwise
Time to make our free throws down the stretch. That's all that's left to salt this one away.
Michigan... 1:03 Remaining
Just 4 bench points? Not a deep bench but still, more fouls than points
Who cares what bench scores? A win is a win is a win.
Umm, there are going to be other games this year, during which bench scoring might matter. We win one game and we're no longer allowed to note flaws in an apparently perfect team?
Well, the guy commenting on the bench had nothing good to say but was just complaining that the team has no bench. To me, this seemed like a typical Michigan fan comment after a victory--instead of celebrating what was a pretty big upset, he focuses solely on the negative.
Let's make some free throws!
I hate how every single b-ball game has to end this way. Intentional fouls in the last two minutes should be two shots and the ball.
What is our B10/ACC Challenge record? I guess it's worse than 5-5, but it seems like we've won a few of these.
Michigan's record is now 4-6. This was their first road win in the challenge. Also first win for John Beilein in the challenge.
This was the first road win in the challenge? I remember us winning at Georgia Tech under Ellerbe (the game where Gavin Groninger was on fire) . . . wasn't that in the challenge? Or was it not around yet?
You're right. Michigan did win at GA Tech in 1999 in the first challenge, but that entire season was vacated because of the NCAA sanctions, so officially it's now a loss. U-M treats it that way at mgoblue.com (from the game story: "Michigan . . .withstood a second-half Clemson run to pick up its first-ever road win in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge") and the play-by-play guy on the radio did the same, saying throughout the game that Michigan was looking for its first road win in the challenge.
Looks like a win! Go Blue!
And as far as the "games will go well if the shots fall" feeling that is pretty common, I think we have enough shooters to make sure there is someone who is hot on any given night. This makes me happy.
Good job by the bball team to come in and play a tough team on the road and get the win.
Quick Wings update: 2-1 Wings. 8 minutes left in 1st. Playing the sharks.
Falling apart slightly at the end, I feel. But overall I have been very impressed with the performance.
will be there this season since Michigan is so young and inexperienced. Only Stu and Novak have significant experience. D-Mo has some experience as well. Everybody else, virtually no experience.
69-61... Michigan Wins!!
FG - 22-49
3pts - 6-20
FT - 19-28
Reb - 35
T/O - 14
Pts in Paint - 30
Great stuff. Love seeing a U-M team exceed expectations with a great performance on the road. That was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Also kudos to all here for a fun, snipe-free thread.
Snipe-free? What's that supposed to mean? You sound like a whiny Dick Fraud supporter.
Gotta like our freshman coming in. Better yet, they don't even get accused of sexual assault before they step on the floor to begin the season!
Do you know if Lloyd Brady was there to take it in?
That's a stupid question, sorry. Of course he was.
Evan Smotrycz is Lloyd Brady.
Road wins are always tough to come by, great win for the young hoopsters.
That was refreshing.
Too many mistakes there down the stretch, and that will kill us against the tougher opposition we will find in the Big Ten. Still, we played tough D & withstood a second half run in a hostile environment. All signs point to big things in this team's future.
the turnovers down the stretch were a little maddening, not to mention the missed FT's. I worry about this team against a good frontcourt. We will have to play better against the Purdue's and Wisconsin's of the big ten. Our frontcourt is thin after Morgan and Smotz.
Important road win will give them confidence. While I expect some mistakes, this team shows promise, and I'm just going to enjoy the ride.
I swear smotrycz is the exact type of player for the belein system....
Sorry if it has been discussed elsewhere but....Is Kelvin Grady going to play bball this year? He is a good ball handler and would add some depth.
Nope he's football only.
Has Beilein ever had a dominant post player? I feel like a true scoring threat big man would be ideal for his system, with all of his shooters providing spacing and opening up the center. Do we have any recruits coming in who can potentially fill that role?
Well, he had DeShawn last year.
Current commits are two guards for 2011--Trey Burke and Carlton Brundidge--plus Glenn Robinson III (6-foot-6 wing) for 2012. I guess you could hope for a big growth spurt from Robinson!
I think Horford has a chance to be pretty good in a couple years with some development and weight room training and Morgan is still just a freshman so he should continue to develop an adequate back to the basket game.
I think this team is still a year or two away from big things but they are already better than last years team chemistry wise. Morris and Morgan impress me the most right now. Both are very smooth and play under control.
Depth behind Morgan is a problem I think right now.
