What the thread title says. Lez git it awn.
MBB: UM vs. Penn State Open Thread.
This had to be the first comment...
That dude's a douche.
Yes he is.
Really hoping for a good start. Aggressive right from the tip
I can listen with the sound on this time. Does that give me reason enough to pop open a Two-Hearted? I await your response.
**looks around as a small "tsss..." of a whisper ripples through the room"
Let's go Blue.
Wire to wire domination please.
Thanks! My usual site didn't have it, and I was dreading being "that guy" who's begging for a stream link...
There's a really good quality stream here, straight from BTN.
Just copy/paste this into VLC (2.0.5 or newer):
Might work with other streaming software but I've only tried VLC and it works great.
Oh God. We got Tim Doyle tonight. "If lovin' Trey Burke is wrong, I don't want to be right."
Keep it in your pants guy.
Can't understand people's hate for Dakich but not Doyle.
Doyle says crazy things, but he doesn't try to act like he knows it all and isn't a flaming asshole like Dakish.
Did you know the same guy coaches Penn State's football and basketball team?
we will win this game way more convincingly than when we played PSU last week.
Good start would help, Go Blue!!!
Step on the gas. Stamp your foot down on their throats until there's no time left on the clock. Can't afford to take these guys lightly.
Little Big Dog SLAM!!!
That. Is a quick timeout.
Confirmed: he has ups
That's a SC Top 10 I'd say
Morgan will get career rebound 500 tonight. Stands at 495 according to Matt Shepard
That's a sorry-looking student section in Happy Valley. Can't really blame them, I suppose, those students have been through hell in terms of PSU athletics over the past year.
Why no Live Blog for MBB?
and looking solid.
would like to see Nik be more aggressive
Tight rims in Happy Valley.
There are no words for that sequence.
Camp Anawana, we hold you in our hearts.
calls the stupid refs have missed
They must have skipped the rebounding drills this week.
Need to take Penn State's 300 fans out of it
Stupid. Penn State getting a ton of offensive rebounds, just like they did at Crisler.
refs suck so bad?
Stauskas not just a shooter
God there is nothing that pisses me off then when the other team clearly is playing harder, that sequence was terrible, lazy pass and then lazy getting back and lazy boxing out, just bad.
Beat me by seconds.
Obligatory 'Stauskas is more than a shooter reference'. Drink.
J-Mo actually looks better offensively tonight than he did before the ankle injury. Now the defensive rebounding on the other hand...
Another "Stauskas is more than a shooter" comment..
Why are we wearing last years jerseys? They have the maize collar
Does it really matter?
I was just thinking our unis looked better than usual. Hooray for no spray paint design on our shorts.
That's one impressive can of spray paint considering what appears to be spray paint on the sides of the shorts are little block Ms.
...they don't have sleeves.
Is anyone else sick of hearing the "stauskas is more than a spot shooter" comment every game? Drives me nuts. If people still think that's all he is then they aren't watching michigan at all
He hasnt been very good at "spot up" shooting lately so I guess he is more than that. How about hes also a defensive liability...
Morgan still have a bit of movement disability? Given a few rebounds away this far and Morgan was in and around a few of them and not seeming to have the "swiftness" to track the ball down.
I'm guessing PSU fans don't have to camp out for BBall games
Shouldn't be giving up that many o-boards in like two possessions
Jordan Morgan is the difference between sweet 16 and the Final Four
Obligatory home team run aided by the no-call on that charge.
We're getting lay-up after lay-up. Not worried.
Love me some almost healthy Jordan Morgan.
They don't look at all interested in this game.
9 out of 10 Doyle is crazy!
he has a point. If you're uncontested and can spot up at the top of the key, you've gotta make them pay for not playing tighter D at the point. It's like a shot in warm ups.
Yea but not only is it to high, he also said anyone with a scholarship. If he changed it to elite prospects and made it 7 out 10 then i would agree.
Trey Burke is still really good.
Doyle already flashing the idiocy, claiming anyone with a scholarship must shoot 90% from beyond NBA range 3 if they are open.
Stauskas and 1, but the refs don't have whistles.
Great great hustle play by McGary, love it.
Big puppy hustle
Probably should've been an and-one for Stauskas.
Effort not an issue with McGary. We should be running away with this by now though
In B1G, if we run away, it is usually at the start of the second half.
And I expect us too here but just saying we had a shot to stretch it to 10 or 12 right there.
We're up 4 points 8.5 minutes in. At this pace we'll win by 19 points, which is 4 above Kenpom's prediction.
Why does it seem this broadcast is focused on an 0-12 BigTen team?
we coulda built the lead better there, but I like that we look like we're getting out of that Feb. funk
As an aside... how about Ryan Evans shooting jump shot fts?
LOL @ everyone cheering at what turned out to be a charge. Took 'em awhile to stop.
Need to push this lead to 10+.
I hate when the other team gets offensive rebounds. If I were an Indiana fan I probably would've combusted last night.
Ugh, it never stops. Always leave a guy all alone for the wide open 3.
Why is everyone cash against us from 3?
practice rebounding on defense?
I don't think we should overreact to these offensive rebounds. It is very, very difficult to rebound when the shots are missed this poorly. Brick City out there.
Not only bricks but really tight rims it seems.
Do we have anyone that can rebound.....seriously???
Of course they can rebound, we just don't. Prefer to keep games interesting and such.
Brick, bricks everywhere!
Did the PSU student section print "we are" shirts in the fashion of the "We On" shirts? Thats kind of sad.
We are... Penn state. It's their "go blue"
These refs are Penn State's best friends right now. Can't give up 30 free throws if the refs don't call fouls on shots.
Great pass there
just made an NBA worthy pass to Stauskas for the lay-in.
It feels like we're pretty much doing what we want on offense and Penn State is struggling on the other end. Maybe all those offensive rebounds we're giving up...
BIG TEN RAP. BRING IT
They block your big shots
Man, we're not taking advantage early on. If we don't start getting some free-throws/fouls then this is going to be another grinder.
At least we're attacking the basket and having some success.
New drinking game. Take a shot every time Michigan gives up an offensive rebound!
We can't play that. We couldn't watch the 2nd half then.
looked lost on transition defense before that ball went out of bounds, lucky for him.
Focus boys, focus
I think I could get a rebound against our defense and I am not very athletic.
Here comes our weirdest rotation ever.
Spike, Hardaway, Stauskas, Horford, Morgan. That's a new one
Man, I hope Stauskas gets going soon.
HOLY SHIT OREBOUNDS ARE AWESOME WHEN YOUR TEAM GETS THEM
Edit: Sorry, got excited. Turnovers after Orebs bring me back down to earth.
Tim Doyle thinks Staukas should've taken that shot and hit it 9/10 times
Just passed up a wide open 3
shoot the effing ball at the top of the key for a 3
Damn. We got an O rebound, but we couldn't convert.
Stauskas gets gunshy when he misses one. I do like trying two posts though.
we're really good at playing down to the level of our competition.
Miami and Florida are not impressed.
Looked exactly like a Burke pass
Aw shit son!
Spike to TIMMAY!
I like it when we get steals.
Wow. I'd say we're getting way way more out of him in year one than any of us had hoped
2 bigs and 2 pgs.
Edit: just kidding my grainy feed makes it hard to tell who is in.
Seems like we're turning the ball over quite a bit this game.
is a balla man! wait till he gains some experience, we're going to be just fine at PG in the next couple years.
Although while typing, Spike errs a bit there
Stop. Turning. It. Over.
So how many times have we turned the ball over?
Jeebus Hardaway and Albrecht
Laziness leads to turnovers.
its called a press. Space the floor, make smart passes. Get the ball to Trey
That is the feeling I get when we let a 0-14 in the B1G Penn State team hang right with us for 3 full halves now.
Was about to say I love spike as a backup after that alley oop. Then the next 15 seconds happened.
no sense of urgency right now. I know it isn't Beilein's style but he needs to rip his team to get them back to playing the fundamentals.
This is kind of annoying
Turnovers are 6 to Michigan, 4 to Penn State in case anyone is curious.
Hardaway has way to many turnovers. Take care of the ball dude. For goodness sake
We'd like to decline the penalty, please.
Bruke finds Morgan. Too bad it doesn't count
That penalty should be declined.
Hahaha Penn state bench
Would've rather had the basket.
Hold on to the fucking ball!!!
That is such a dumb rule. And get rid of the stupid rule that lets you call a timeout when your sliding across the floor why your at it.
Now Burke lazy with the ball. uggh
Bald coaches always look crazier in the huddle.
Unforced turnovers, yay!
How in hell is that a foul on Morgan? Didn't even touch him.
he looked at him in the wrong tone of voice.
bullshit call on Morgan, and now commercial. I don't even
I expected PSU to have wide open 3's and offensive rebounds. I did NOT expect us to have all these sloppy, lazy turnovers.
Why did Morgan get called for the foul when Newbill was pushing off arm extended and everything?
It was a bad call.
Gotta play through it. 4 minutes here. Hold them to a bucket, two tops and take an 8 point lead to halftime.
That guy has been doing that push off with the forearm all game.
Running next to a guy is now a foul.
kinda cheesy foul call is that, I see our guys get mugged on shit like that and we don't get calls, yet that was a foul?
I'm fucking confused anymore by ref calls, SMH
It looked the PSU guy put his hand on Morgan and they called it on Morgan.
pesky nittany lions
Second half different story looming!!!
It would be nice if we could put together a complete game. Maybe I ask too much, but, I like nice things.
I'm pretty confident we'll pull away. We just need to settle down and avoid the lazy turnovers. It's annoying that we've let them hang around this long, though.
"America's Play" that is all
He's right on the money there, actually. Everyone high school team in the country runs a "screen the screener" play and coaches do call it "America's Play."
LOL OK BRO
And here I thought Penn State was bad at jumpshots.
Never ready to play in the 1st half?
It seems like most teams play well against us. I think that comes with the territory of being a top program. We are going to get everyone's best shots. We have to learn how to play better with the target on our backs.
You have to be fucking kidding.
PSU won't shoot 3s this well and we won't shoot them this badly.
but we're gonna lose to a low seed in the tournment if we think we can get away with playing like this
Okay, PSU is 55.6% from 3. We're 12.5%. Both of these will regress to the mean.
Teams have shot the 3 against us all season long. Even when we win big, it still happens.
we're 1-8 from 3 and penn state is 5-10..what?
Seriously, how about we remember that we're Michigan and they're Penn State. No way they should even have 20 pts right now, let alone 30.
Can anyone tell me why we double them on the perimeter with Morgan? It pretty much leads to an open 3 every time, or worse an easy lay-in with our only big on the perimeter.
It's a hedge. We always hedge ball screens.
I know what a hedge is, and it usually involves Morgan diving back into the lane and not trying to trap. We ran 2 straight perimeter traps that resulted in open 3s.
Beilein should lay into the guys at half.
gottta play better than this
Our defense is just bad. No great on ball defenders, bigs get pushed around, struggle on zones and switching.
We're playing like shit wow
Another turnover then M foul sequence. What am I watching?
Good call on the blocking. He had time to set up for the charge, but he didn't do it properly.
Can't get calls at home, can't get them against bad teams.
This is a pathetic display.
Jesus Christ how many times is he going to say you have to make 9 out of 10 of those at the top of the key? I've counted 4.
9.5 at the current rate. Also, jesus, are we really essentially tied with Penn State at the half?
If we made 3-pointers at the same clip our opponents do against us, we'd be undefeated.
This is depressing. We don't have a chance against State or Indiana with the way we've played the last month.
Eh, different game at Crisler, but yes, it would appear we have the potential to be the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed ever with the play against Penn State.
Lol 9-10 comment again.
Turnover has been a problem tonight.
Turnover has been a problem tonight.
Shut up, Doyle.
a foul inside went our way!!!!
our "D" defense.
At some point, doesn't it go from "every team brings their 'A' game" to "our defense is not so good?"
It went to that about a month ago.
That was not a charge. are you kidding me?
Close call, he was shuffling a bit.
Someone needs to coach Stauskas on leaving his feet on drives.
I will take that
FUCKING BULLSHIT AGAIN
That was not a charge. Are you kidding me?
not a double post
Get the fuck out of here.
McGary stealing some momentum. Then Stauskas...
Not worth getting a T over. At halftime the coaches have a chance to talk things over with the officials.
Again, guy is shuffling and ANOTHER charge called. Can you shuffle and still get that call? I read somewhere that you can (I think). Shoddy.
Yes, you can. By rule, your feet do not have to be set.
Stauskas needs to just pull up and hit a mid-range jumper. That or control your freaking body.
What the fuck?!
but great effort Nik. Feed it to your teammates not named Mitch McGary.
Trillion time for Vogrich
I always think 'oh no, he's going to fall like 3 feet short of the basket' then he basically floats to a layup.
It would be nice if we could get charge calls too.
And I guarantee a turnover...
looks pissed. Wouldn't want to be a player in that locker room right now.
I'm finally coming around. The charge call may have run its course, time to get rid of it. Plus BIG ten refs are horrible.
Need to just pull up and bank that one off the window, instead of lowering your shoulder into a guy already planted. Would've been a great momentum killer.
I REALLY WISH STAUSKAS WOULD GET A T THERE. 2 straight bs "charges" on him. You could hear him say "are you kidding me?" audibly.
You wish he'd get a T? Fuck that.
Penn State on par to score 20+ above their conference average against us, again. Ugh. I also feel like every single game I hear about how are turning the ball over much more than our season average... at some point doesn't our average go up?
No. Our average stays the same no matter what.
We'd be up 8-10 if we weren't lazy in the first half. I don't think Beilein will allow that to happen in the 2nd.
Part of me thinks JB will go all, "if you're not in it, you're pulled." But another part things he will go all Al Gorgeous and go, "give it time; it'll work . . ."
Hire our own full-time referees. The B1G makes too much money not to be able to have their own full-time refs in football and hoops. If the Big East could go to 6 personal fouls for a couple years, we should be able to lobby to have our own refs.
What i would give for the NCAA to go to 6 fouls
Nice idea in theory, but then where do they come from.
No good referee is going to willingly limit his number of games by agreeing to only work the B10. Therefore, you're stuck with the refs who are willing to do that and they certainly will be bottom of the barrel.
According to Outside the Lines back in 2010 (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=5581117)
This quote from the article: "The average Division I ref might make $50,000 a year, if he can officiate 40 to 60 games a season, but that's before taxes -- and that earning power goes away the minute a guy is injured or sick or can't work for whatever reason."
This is referring to college basketball, but I'd let this be the starting point in the conversation. I think the B1G should at least look into it.
Interesting. The B10, however, gets the top officials in the game. Guys that routinely work 80-90 games and thus are making closer to $80,000+ a year.
Can we really pay the top X officials 80k a year to work only 20-30 games each?
I don't see the referees going for it. Especially considering working only B10 games is going to affect their upward mobility (re: working the national tournament).
But I'd be happy if there's at least a conversation about it. There's too much money involved now to not think about it.
drive me nuts with their inconsistency....and so does our BBall team for that matter
They have a shot at a BIG championship and that's the type of effort in the first half. Also, what does it take for Coach B to figure out he needs to cover the inbounder at the end of the half? 4.1 seconds and they give up an 8 foot jumper. Good thing PSU doesn't shoot all that well.
That halftime announcer is annoying. Haters gonna hate.
Jim Jackson is annoying. Sorry your son isn't on our team.
Those two charging calls on Stauskas were garbage.
Here's the shooting at halftime:
We've got eight offensive rebounds and eighteen overall, which is a much better pace than last week. We could stand a few less turnovers in the second half (10 compared to Penn State's 7), but otherwise very competitive and, from an offensive standpoint, in Michigan's favor. Having Morgan out there definitely helps - he was responsible for half of the offensive rebounds last week despite playing less than half the game, although McGary has the most of anyone tonight.
PSU not ending up at 50% from the 3 at the end of the game. Sure we leave em wide open, but, just no.
I feel like even if we didn't leave anybody on the floor PSU wouldn't normally shoot 50% from 3.
Crappy 1st half. This team is in a cons.
Stat of the half: 10 turnovers by Michigan. That just isn't tolerable. Should be rectified.
Look top teams have lost to worse teams already this season.
Not playing the best at the moment but I think this team will pick it up in the second half. Good way to almost score the last four points of the half and it started with good defense McGary.
Rationality is not welcome in a BB game thread
upset alert. upset alert.
Who is getting upset? Pitt is still in the first half.
Oh don't be a tool.
The charge calls in this game are getting absolutely ridiculous.
Also is it me or does Dakich play the Cheese in the Cheez-it commercials?
Cut the turnovers down and hit a couple threes. I think we still hit Kenpom's prediction.
Trying to figure out our 3-pt defense here....
Our rotations are often too slow or too late. I think what we're really missing is that on-the-ball defender that can recover from the ball screen quick enough so we don't have to wait on rotating back into place.
I won't be surprised to see some 2-3 in the second half.
I would really like to see a team just go cold against us. Like have a ton of things open and just miss it. We have our share of this, but it feels like forever since a team has done this against us.
That's because our defense is lousy.
And yet other PSU plays crappy D usually and that doesn't stop us from going cold.
Better yet, let's improve our rotations so we aren't giving up so many open shots in the first place.
Is it just me or does the one announcer keep calling him "Albrite?"
I vote for calling him Alright Albrite for the rest of his career.
More of that please
He's a sneaky one, did you see him ninja that ball away from the PSU inbounder?
They gave him credit for the BS charges.
That guy clearly pushed Morgan in the back on the rebound
i like stauskas moving around a lot and getting into the offense. Against Illinois he was just standing on the wing all game
much more active on def
but, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't feel like we ever actually force a TO from that. It seems it's more likely that the other team gets a wide open look from 3 after we get a double
Been cold for last 3 games or so,bound to get hot soon
Just in time for MSU and Indiana
Hopefully. He's been cold since the MSU game and it shows.
What in the world is being reviewed?
Luckily, they have the offense to.
If we know anything this year, it's that there is no flawless team.
Can I getta AND 1?!
Gif it right now.
Holy shat Burke, Hardaway.
Well this is a good start to the half
GUYS OH NO UPSET ALERT
seriously you still doubt the spurt ability of this team?
I like when we play well...it pleases me.
Trey Burke broke that guys ankles. Way to push the lead to 10 out of nowhere
Can we start the game on Sunday like that? How about the next two Sundays please?
Well...there's the 2nd run folks have been talking aout
Well, now. Let's have more of this.
Sickest crossover i have ever seen watching live in my life.
THJ had a pretty great one early in the season as well
One on three. That's embarrassing if you're Nittany.
I wish there was a "Gross" option for moderation.
Good lord... What the hell just happened
Turns out good things happen when a they finally regress to the mean on the threes
Burke just clowned that defender. Wow.
Did anyone else notice we are wearing last years shorts?
Some other guy mentioned it earlier in the thread.
