MBB Recruiting: New 2018 Offer Robby Carmody

Submitted by Matt EM on

2018 Wing Robby Carmody has just informed me that Coach Beilein has extended a scholarship offer. No secret that I'm a huge fan of his game. More importantly, there is legit mutual interest.

Here are some highlights I just put together on Robby from the Adidas Championship in late July

It's early in '18 ranking cycle, but if he's top 50 ESPN ranked at this point, chances are probably good we're looking at a consensus top 100 recruit here.   I don't mind kicking the tires on Carmody.  Great shooter, court vision, and passing.

2017 - no more offers will go out in the near future. The staff is waiting until September 9th, at which point home/school visits will be conducted with existing offers (Cain, Bowen, Jackson, Wilkes). Probably some brief courting after that assuming no commitments, and the staff will probably make some calls late September/early October to essentially say are you on board, or do we have to move on?

2018 - 2 kids that REALLY want an offer are Kevin Easley (4 star/#80ish) combo forward out of Indiana and Dwayne Cohill (4star/#80ish) PG out of Ohio.

Problem is the staff is waiting on Brandon Johns (who I think Easley is probably approaching, or just as good) with respect to Easley and we just took Eli Brooks, so there may not be a need for a PG in 18 according to the staff.

2018 out of Ohio (same HS as Caris) will also be visting Friday. Hunter is a combo forward that is a 3.5 star - i suspect his ranking will rise, but he plays for a small AAU club (OH Nova), so the exposure isnt' great. Be interesting to see if we offer, as Easley just visted this past weekend for camp and did not come away with an offer, despite the staff knowing he very much wanted one.

Both seem to be destined for the 2 guard spot, and while I think Ryan has the higher ceiling, I like Carmody's motor and aggressiveness. I think Beilein coached teams need a guy with attitude and will like Carmody. Ryan probably makes more sense from a strictly offensive point of view but I think Carmody would bring intangibles that are likely going to be needed.

and while I do agree with you that Cormac may have the higher ceiling, I think Robby is probably the more likely instant impact player, and let's face it, that's what we need. Robby has a college ready frame right now at 6'4-6'5 and 200lbs, can shoot the ball off the dribble or the catch, very underrated passer, attacks the offensive glass, finishes through contact with no problem at all, and plays defense extremely hard.

Cormac is certainly the better ballhandler and passer, hands down, he simply has more skill in that regard, and is an underrated athlete. However, he's very tentative when ball pressure is applied by the defense, he gets knocked off his spot and is off balance often. Cormac needs to gain about 30lbs of muscle and that is no exaggeration. His motor leaves a little something to be desired as well.

I would love to have either, but I think Cormac will take a year or 2 to adjust to the physicality and game speed at the B10 level, whereas I think Carmody could carve out a decent role from the minute he steps on campus.
