MBB: Potential Grad Transfer

Submitted by OaklandInPlay on
A 6-foot-7 small forward from Cornell, graduate transfer Shonn Miller met Michigan coaches on Friday, according to a report from ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman. He averages 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds in 31.3 minutes per game. He shot 43.4 percent from the field, 83.4 percent from the free-throw line, and made 28-of-104 3-pointers (.269).

Really think hes leaving after being hurt half the year?

I thought he still had some things to work on, might be a GRIII mistake at this point.  Come back for 1 more.

IMO  he is at the 4.  In Brian's world Irvin is a 4 but in my world Dawkins is our starting 4 next year with Chatman as the backup.  So I think he'd compete with those 2 and it allows DJ Wilson to form a 3 man group at the center assuming Donnal is still around.

Cornell doesnt play many P5 conferences but he did have games v South Carolina, Syracuse and PSU

SC

  • 29M, 2-6, 33% 9 pts, 0-2 from 3, 3 rbs, 1 block, fouled out

PSU

  • 34M, 7-12, 58% 15 pts 1-3 from 3, 3 rbs, 3 stls, 3 blocks, 2 fouls

Cuse

  • 37M, 6-11, 55% 12 pts 0-4 from 3, 5 rbs 2 stls 2 blocks, 2 fouls

So the guy can't shoot 3 pointers- neither can Brandon Dawson.  He is not a great rebounder vs P5 competition (gets double digit rebounds a lot in Ivy league but thats not comparable to Big 10) but his stat line is full of things like steals and blocks so it sounds like he has quick hands and probably is at least an average defender.  Which on our team would be one of our better defenders.  He looks like a solid shooter within the 3 pt line.  If you take out all his 3 pt misses he actually is shooting a very nice % within 2 pt range.

If these other dudes dont work out I'd welcome out a guy who actually is a threat on the defensive side of the ball.  You are not going to get a star in a grad transfer rental.

He doesnt play Max's position but you could argue he is a 1 for 1 trade for Max in terms of 1 year of eligibiliy if he came here.  If you think DJ Wilson is a 5 who can play 8-13 minutes a game next year (basically what Max does) than Wilson takes Max role on next year's team (adding 3 inches of height but losing bulk and this dude is more competition at the 4 for Chatman - behind Dawkins.   Or if you are pro Max you could say keep Max and make Wilson that competition at the 4 for Chatman.

He seems like a decent banger.  When I see rebounding issues against P5 teams, I always figure there is some athleticism limitations, but he seems like a plus defender who can hang inside against less athletic players, and he got to the line 169 times, which is a top-30 rating.

If Michigan has the space, he'd be a nice addition.  Would help balance out the youth on the front line, and gives you a guy who can you some freedom at the 4 and 5 if Wilson or Doyle struggle.

People need to stop with the 3 point emphasis. We cannot continue to live and die by the doggone 3 ball. We need more athletes that have an edge and this kid has that. I think hed be a great addition. We don't need another guy jacking 3s all over the place. We need defense and rebounding...athleticism.

Yeah it kills me - all year people (me included)  talk about the lack of athleticism, length, defensive prowess, rebounding, ability to block shots up front.  Then there is a prospect who brings that and people harp on 3 pointers as his main weakness.

We have another 6 guys who live on 3 pointers, not every guy needs to do it.

Could be an interesting pickup if they have the space.  He's got decent size, and while the Big Red have been a bit of a tire-fire recently, he's put up good numbers against decent competition.  He seems to get to the line a good amount, though if you look at his rebounding numbers against teams like Syracuse and PSU you can see there is probably an athleticism limitation in his game, but he's a good rebounder and had a pretty good defensive win shares, and he averaged almost 2 blocks a game.  So if nothing else, he would be a nice second-team banger against some of the more dinosaur teams in the league.
