MBB: Nebraska G/F Andrew White III to Grad Transfer

Submitted by The Victors on

Nebraska G/F Andrew White III will transfer for a 5th year at a different school for the 2016/17 season.  A few items of note:

  • 6-6/6-7 wing ranked around the top 50 prospects out of high school in 2012 out of Virginia
  • Played sparingly as a backup at Kansas for his freshman and sophomore seasons before transferring to Nebraska (sitting out the 2014/15 season)
  • Led Nebraska in scoring (16.6 pts/gm) and rebounding (5.9 reb/gm) last season
  • Put his name into this year's NBA draft and worked out for several teams before taking himself out on the deadline day

There are several other links found in The Google. I mostly posted this because it seems Michigan's biggest need this upcoming season is depth at the wing, though there is no indication of interest from either side or if White will be granted a full release to any school. But, from the outside, it does seem like a good fit. White is looking for more exposure to showcase his abilities to the NBA, which would mostly mean playing for a winning team and getting substantial playing time. The team would also need available scholarships for the upcoming season. Michigan seems to check those off on top of having a major need for a player like White (good athlete, create his own shot, rebound, etc.).

Doubt Beilein will wade into this one...

twitter.com 4 Seth Greenberg (SethOnHoops) The culture of the game today; the coaches are as much a part of the transfer problem as the players. No respect for each other. 8:00 PM - 25 Jun 2016

twitter.com 2 Seth Greenberg (SethOnHoops) Do you really think players just wake up at the end of June and say "I'm going to transfer". No. Their people field call and plant the seed. 8:18 PM - 25 Jun 2016

twitter.com 4 Seth Greenberg (SethOnHoops) Coaches integrity must be questioned when they "blow up"/negative recruit, tamper with players off others program. 8:08 PM - 25 Jun 2016

He'd been discussing leaving for quite awhile within the program and I guarantee he's already reached out and communicated with other programs before his release, either himself or through a third party.

If I'm Michigan, I still recruit him anyway though. This team desperately needs another wing and he's not only the best wing out there, but the best transfer available. He's also a great shooter with length that can play both ways too. Perfect fit for what Michigan needs most.

May not be the prettiest recruitment, but if I'm Michigan, I recruit him as hard as I can.

there was a thread over on umhoops about him.  Seems like there is some shadiness with this transfer.  JB would probably stay away from this.

I don't know the whole story, but why do we assume a coach "blew up their roster"? maybe he had intentions of going pro and another coach talked him into a transfer instead. either way he was leaving Nebraska. just a possibility...

He sounds like the kind of player who is convinced he is NBA material when he is not and is looking to blame anybody but himself for his own short comings. A player like Jon Horford comes to mind, but at least Horford didn't jump ship twice in college.

The thing is, if I were an NBA coach or GM, unless a player with a history like White's projected as a first or second round draft pick, I wouldn't waste my time with him.

NCAA free agency was the logical outcome as soon as the grad transfer was permitted.

The unintended consequence is that it also support 'regular' transfers, since transfers like White (and potentially Chatman, Doyle, Dawkins) who play as a freshman get 2 opportunities to transfer for the price of one. If those guys do well at lower levels, they'll get an opportunity to transfer back to a major program for their 5th year.

If you aren't a one-and-done type and your goal is to play professional basketball you can elect to get development from 3 different coaching stafffs.
