MBB Michigan vs Illinois

Submitted by goblue16 on

Huge road win against the Illini. I think we all need to give Mark Donnal a break. He played the best game of his career and added another great game against Penn St. unfortunately that game was not recorded and i have no way of getting it. If anyone has the Penn st game message me because i actually havent watched it. Next 3 games will be big for Michigan and especially Donnal. Enjoy GO BLUE!!

I am not sure why you are posting about a game from a week ago that has been covered already.  The Penn St game isn't going to show you much more than the Illinois game did.  They are hot when the 3 ball falls and they are cold when it doesn't.  Lavert didn't play and Donnal is good at one part of his game and not spectacular at anything.

I know this isn't a popular item, but when this team runs into another team with a true big guy we are going to struggle.  Donnal is good at running a pick and roll which is easy to defend when you have a true big, but he cannot generate points from the block.  Wagner is the only guy on the team who seems to understand playing from the post and he is 30lbs too light.  A year in the weight room will benefit tremendously.

Walton had an off game against Penn St and MAAR had a pretty good game.  This team could cause problems when they are on, but when they are off they are going to get beat pretty easy.

struggle when they are off. That doesn't negate the fact that Michigan starts every game with 4 legitimate 3P shooters whose range must be respected. It doesn't negate the spacing/lanes that creates or Donnal getting dump offs. Add to that Caris, Robinson, Walton and Irvin's passing abilities. I don't worry about Beilein's ability to generate offense. The thing to worry about is defending teams with legitimate inside games.

The OP says

I think people stopped picking on Donnal immediately after the Illinois game, where he played superbly.  It's nice that you posted video of the game (really), but I think that Donnal's gotten nothing but love around these parts for the past six days or so.

Let's credit Robinson and Walton too for giving Donnal and even Mo Wagner good, easy looks at the basket. Yes our bigs (if you would even call them that, no offense) are knocking down the shots but it starts with great ball movement and proves not every shot for this team needs to be a 3 pointer. Also anyone else getting the sense Irvin is starting to find his stroke beyond the arc?
