Looks like we are suffering from the injury bug.

Could see a lot of Lonergan tomorrow also.

EDIT: Was trying to embed below instead of block quote; anyone know how to fix that?

EDIT 2: All healthy players at this time:

MAAR

Dawkins

Lonergan

Donnal

Bielfeldt

Dakich

Hatch

...

Think it's fair to factor in that even a vintage Beilein team is terribly ill-suited to win 3 games in 3 days as a perimeter-oriented team. Meanwhile with their emphasis on D and rebounding MSU has won 4 BTT titles under Izzo, including 2 of the last 3.

My point being that I don't consider the result of that game at all representative of the quality of our team last year in comparison to theirs.

but I kind of have to disagree that he is not using the injuries as an "excuse" or something close to it.  I have heard JB play the injury card an uncomfortable number of times this year, and he spoke freely about the respiratory illnesses after the NW game.  It is not even close to the flat out blubbering that Izzo does, but "injuries" have certainly become a consistent word in his vocabulary this year.

I do tend to get a little irritated when a team consistently reports the injury of a player who is playing anyway.  That seems Izzo-ish to me.  I don't think we get to include Walton's "turf toe" or Spike's "lower body injury" in our tale of woe right now.

There's a difference between whining about it and using it as an excuse versus acknowledging injuries as an explanation for certain things (why player X is getting PT rather than player Y, why you had to adjust gameplans, etc).  There's no question injuries have been rampant this year, same as how they were for MSU last year, the difference is the language when talking about it.  Izzo took the "woe is us" approach, JB has been much more "this guy's hurt, next man up" with his responses.

I mean I can see the difference, I am not saying that JB is reaching Izzo level about it, but I have kind of heard him tip toeing the line a little bit.   Just as I really did not want to hear anything else about Appling's wrist last year, I am really not interested in constant discussion regarding the ins and outs of turf toe on a daily basis this year.

So they won 1 of 3 games against Michigan? Congrats - everything worked out for them, once, and they won.  I never understood this argument, because it applied to Michigan as well - UM was without Mitch McGary for both of those games, and he was an NBA first-rounder.

Izzo finally got his team up and running, and they beat Michigan once.  Michigan never had a full roster and still beat MSU 2 out of 3 times, and has been taking a majority of the games the past 3-4 years.

Izzo was right in that when he won games, he could say he had the right players out there.   But when he lost, it was because he was playing a bunch of unprepared, ill-equipped players who would optimally not have been out there, which is also called "being a coach".

MSU didn't lose anyone for the season last year.  Dawson and Payne each missed a few weeks during the regular season, but both were back by March.

We OTOH have lost our best player to a season-ending injury each of the last two years.

How can we be starting the Human Victory Cigar?  Does this mean I can't root for Lonergan to shoot every time he touches the ball anymore?  /s

On a serious note, good luck to the guys getting more PT.  They probably never expected this opportunity and it's not a great situation as far as the team is concerned, but it would be pretty awesome getting to start after all the hard work they put in.

I thought they agreed to let Andrew Dakich redshirt so that he could play at another school as a graduate student. Unless he has decided to sacrifice that graduate season in order to give the current Michigan team enough healthy players for the rest of the season, then it would seem fair to let him keep the redshirt.

If there's a real emergency and a need for some extra bench players, could Ian Bunting be granted permission by the football coaches to suit up for the basketball team for the rest of this season?

Calling Hatch healthy is definitely a stretch.

[Mandatory disclaimer that I love the kid and am rooting for him. Always seem to get criticized whenever I give an honest opinion about his future as an athlete]

With Dakich redshirting and Hatch still not technically healthy, we have 5 players perfectly healthy. If none of the injured can play, might as well go to a 2-3 zone all game to allow the players to play all 40 minutes. However, I expect Irvin and Walton to be able to go, and probably at least 1 more.

Time for MAAR and Dawkins show off their skills and grow up. I'm actually excited to see this happen. This will only help next season by giving these guys some invaluable experience.

The available players

Healthy; MAAR, Dawkins, Donnal, Lonergan, Dakich, Beilfeldt

Years: FR, FR, RS FR, SO, SO, SR

Playable; Hatch, Irvin, Walton

Years: FR, SO, SO

So Beilein is going to put a game plan using 4 freshmen, 4 sophomores and 1 senior

I know he made a run in the tournament with a starting 5 of SO, JR, FR, FR, FR a few years ago, but man, Beilein deals with some young players.
