MBB "Evaluating" 2014 Ohio Committ Ryan Taylor

Submitted by alum96 on

Let's avoid the Caris LeVert comparison because other than being a late signee and school he has a comittiment to, and size (6'6), build (makes Caris look fat) and position (SG) he is nothing like Caris... ok ok, feel free to get all crazy on projections.

More seriously he only has one offer and even that offer was originally a North Dakota State offer but said school's coach moved to Ohio and brought the offer with him.   Taylor says Seton Hall and Creighton are sniffing around in the general vicinity but no offers.   Kid played in same AAU program as Mitch, Spike, and GR3.

Anyhow UMhoops.com has the full story.

Profile at UMhoops - bored of developing 3 stars into NBA draft picks Beilein is trying for 0 stars.

Could be a great opportunity for Ryan. I trust Coach B. If he offers him, I expect he'll be a good fit. Best of luck to Ryan no matter where he ends up!

Caris was Ohio POY, young for his grade and 6'4''. That was an anomally.

That said, I hope this guy could potentially be a 4 yr prductive guy like Spike.

Oh I agree 100%.  I was just throwing it out there ahead of "well the last guy we got from Ohio is a projected 2015 NBA first rounder so here we go again".   Expectations have become a little nuts around here, expecting every 3 star to leave school early for the draft.  There are going to be misses here and there and not everyone has the ceiling.  We've had a glorious run of development and I think this staff can get the most out of everyone but everyone has a different ceiling.

Sounds like he has not even been to Ohio yet to visit so if Coach B wants him, it sounds like he would come.  As syou  said, if he can become a 4 year role player who has meaningful minutes in his soph-senior years we should be happy considering how late in the process he was offered and what his other offer(s) [singular] is.

Saw like 2 minutres of YouTube film. He's a good shooter, but his release is scary low. Like, he would have a tough time even getting a shot off in the B1G low. I think the film was from pre-prep school (i.e. his senior year), so hopefully that's changed over the past year.

Has to make his release higher and quicker.  Also looks long, but not explosive.  If he came he's a sure redshirt to put meat on his bones and gain some explosiveness.

That said, after a redshirt, you'd have a good shooter that's 6'6", even if he's not a ball handler/slasher, that's not bad to have at the end of your bench.

He's not an Ohio University commit; very confusing and misleading OP.

Below is a quote from the article linked in the OP. The article does not say he's committed to Ohio.

Ohio University is the only school that has offered Taylor at this point. The guard said he has also received interest from Creighton and Seton Hall. Even his offer to play at Ohio came circuitously – new Bobcats coach Saul Phillips offered Taylor while he was coach at North Dakota State and asked Taylor to follow him to Ohio.

Taylor said he will be visiting Ohio at some point. He also mentioned that he has already visited Michigan — unofficially, for the home loss against Wisconsin.

From the story it sounds like Beilein is developing some ties with AAU guys in Indiana, or at least one specifically. Assuming there is nothing shady about that guy, and I would give the honoroable Mr. Beilein, the benefit of the doubt this could be really good. An AAU pipeline out of Indiana would suit our program well. Now maybe we can get a pipeline out of Chicago or somewhere else in the Midwest. Hopeful thoughts.
