MBB on BTN outdraws Redwings and Pistons

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

I came across an article about the MBB team and the BTT.  When speaking about the recent increase in ratings of the BTN,   BTN President Mark Silverman said,

However, there’s little question the revival of the sleeping giant in Indiana and strong run by the Wolverines have helped fuel this surge.

Silverman also said,

there were nights where Michigan basketball on BTN did better ratings than the Redwings and Pistons

This is certainly interesting to see Michigan leading the RWs in ratings.  I know the RWs are down this year but the RW fans have been loyal for over 10 years.

hockey is a "niche" sport...compared to football and basketball. fans are loyal to the core but it doesn't attract the "average sports fan" whatever that means

The Wings and Pistons are less-than-stellar this year where as Big Ten hoops are a blast to watch and Michigan and Sparty are both doing well. Not a shock.

It's a bit of a shame actually that it is realtively difficult to get the Nielsen data except in bits and pieces unless you are a Nielsen client. That being said, a couple days ago, the BTN released it February data, which showed a 0.66 rating in BTN markets overall, ratings which were the highest ever apparently.

The Metro Detroit ratings are obviously buried in that, but if Michigan and Michigan State basketball are outstripping the Pistons and Red Wings in local ratings, and the BTN was getting a 0.66 in its "home market"....that's not very many people, I would think. It's sad in a way because the Wings were actually the #3 NHL draw nationally just a few years ago, I think. I seem to remember a Nielsen study to this effect anyway.
