MBB big moment 7 years ago

Submitted by UMfan21 on

In my Facebook TimeHop today my comments from November 20th, 2008 came up.  It was full of excitement that "Michigan basketball got their first huge win under Beilein!".  I had to look up the game, but it was a gem.

UofM (led by DeShawn Sims, Manny Harris, a pair of walk ons, and two kids named Novak and Stu Douglass) knocked off the #4 UCLA bruins.  It was UofM's first win over a ranked team in ELEVEN YEARS.  Watching this clip, I remember how excited I was for our future, I had no idea just how good we would become.

Ah, freshman year for me.  Remember being excited for the huge win over a #4 team UCLA and then beating another #4 Duke in Ann Arbor, which was one of my favorite bball games I've attended.

Maize Rage meetings were 5-10 people total. We couldn't fill up the bleachers. The school gave us pizza and pop before every game and gave swag giveaways to those of us with tickets who always showed up. Good times.

That Duke win is my favorite Michigan bball game and the watching the selection show live with the team was amazing.

This was the game where I thought Stu was going to be better than Novak.  But, Novak really came on after this game and had a much bigger impact over the course of his career.  Early on though, Stu looked like the stud.

Stu has always seemed underappreciated to me.  For a year or two it was said that he was the best athlete on the team.  He always drews the toughest backcourt matchup on the defensive side too.  And he had some big, big shots, including in the State game that everyone remembers Novak for.

Stu had a fine career, although I'm not sure why you would expect him to hold that record forever considering that he never advanced past the second round of the tourney, so he missed out on several potential games. Jordan Morgan (whose teams advanced deep into the tourney his junior and senior year) has already broken the record and someone else will probably eventually break his down the road.

It was UofM's first win over a ranked team in ELEVEN YEARS.

I think you mean the first win over a top-five team. ('97 Duke being the previous one.) We definitely beat some ranked teams under Amaker.

The Illinois game at home in the 05-06 year comes to mind.  They were ranked something like 9 - it was a huge win and at the time it seemed like that win would guarantee our tourney birth.  One of the best game atmosphere's I've ever been at.  Then we tanked down the stretch and missed our tourney bid...

Can remember listening to this game on the radio in bed. Went crazy when it finished. When I got to high school the next morning I can remember telling my gym teacher (an MSU alum) that Michigan Basketball is back! He laughed and said "there's no way throwing up that many 3s in a Big Ten game will result in wins"

I remember watching that game while I was at work, bartending. It was really slow at the time, so I was able to watch without much interruption. It was the start of a great era of MBB. Here is to more success to come!

That was an exciting win because it was so unexpected. I forgot that UCLA was ranked that high.

Look at the shot of the fans frantically jumping and hugging in the bottom right hand of the video when UCLA throws the ball away at 14 seconds. I love it!

Watching that video is what gives me hope for this year.  If Beilein can pull off that success with guys like Anthony Wright, Zach Gibson, and Kelvin Grady (an underrated player in my opinion) then I like our chances with the 2016 roster despite some of the obvious holes and lack of NBA talent.

I think Beilein has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.

Stu is probably my favorite Michigan basketball player of all time (2008-09 was also my freshman year), and you are right that he set the all time games played record (136) at the end of his senior year, but Jordan Morgan surpassed that two years later with 140.
