MBB: Aubrey Dawkins also visiting Michigan this weekend

Submitted by Raoul on

On both Twitter and today's recruiting roundup (podcast), Sam Webb has reported that the Michigan basketball program will host a second visitor this weekend—Aubrey Dawkins, a 6-4 shooting guard out of New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire. He's the son of Johnny Dawkins, head coach at Stanford and a national player of the year during his college career at Duke who went on to play nine years in the NBA. Rivals lists Aubrey Dawkins with offers from Dayton and Rhode Island. Why not Stanford? Sam says it's probably because of Stanford's tough admission standards.

So that's two possible late 2014 signees who are visiting this weekend—the other of course being Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman.

However I would find myself inclined to first try to add Dawkins to the class, then MAAR if he does not bite.  I would be hesitant to offer both because even though the chances of LeVert going pro after next season seem likely, I want a stud SG in the 2015 class.  We're well in the hunt for Jalen Coleman, I would not want to jeopardize that (caveats about predicting future class sizes applying here obviously).

Don't box Beilein in, people.  Yes, he loves his shooters, but he's happy to play a non-shooter in his rotation as long as there are shooters around him.  With Donnal and Wilson (presumably) able to shoot, there is plenty of room for a combo guard who excels at defending and getting to the rim.  Carlton Brudndidge is a guy that was similar and Michigan wanted him bad.  He was a bust, but it would be interesting to see what Beilein would do with a guy like that.

Not unprecedented anyway, we had some pretty good success with Manny Harris, who wasn't much of an outside shooter either.

Not only that, but shooting is sometimes a skill that can be developed.  If MAAR can do everything else, it'll work.

Don't expect a commitment from Dawkins this weekend if he gets a Michigan offer, as he still plans to visit Dayton, according to this tweet from his AAU team:

Michigan is apparently interested in Cole Huff, who's transferring from Nevada. He's a 6-8 sophomore forward who averaged 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 2013-14 and led his team in 3-point shooting (40.3%) and free-throw shooting (82.2%). Nevada is prohibiting him from transferring to about 45 schools, mostly on the West Coast.

He's appealed the decision, but in the meantime, Michigan is among the schools who have asked for and received his release in order to be able to contact him (per his former AAU coach, Clint Parks).
