MBB AP Preseason Ranking: #25

Submitted by Generic MGoBlogger on

Six Big Ten teams in the first basketball AP Top 25 Poll of the season...

#3: Maryland

#13: Staee

#15: Indiana

#17: Wisconsin

#23: Purdue

#25: Michigan

I guess this sorta confirms our belief that the Big Ten is a huge toss-up after Maryland.  Should be interesting to see the season unfold, but I'm psyched for this to kick off. Go Blue!

Bronson Koening is a quality PG and was better than Jackson last year. Wisconsin has two known quantities and there's Bo Ryan who somehow always find good white players who can shoot and play defense

Koenig, Bronson.

Former UM recruits Vitto Brown (Jr) and Brevin Pritzl (Fr) should get plenty of run.   I assume Brown becomes the de factor rebounder (with Hayes).

We'll also see the inevitable emergence of a redshirt Fr, or some other some other forgotten roster member who will make tremendous off-season strides.

I have learned to never underestimate Bo Ryan.

We're at least the third best team on this list, if you ask me. Predictions aren't worth much at this point, but it means a lot to have a ton of good players back and healthy and older and stronger. Should be a fun year.

If rankings meant a damn thing, my reply would be "they are not underrated." While we have some key guys returning, two of them missed significant time last season and the rest are still pretty young. Now, we SHOULD have a good season and definitely be in contention to win the conference, but 25 is about right (again, if rankings meant anything in basketball).

Gotta say, I think UM is very much being overlooked this year. Over reaction from weird almost everything-bad-that-can-happen-does kind of year. Won't be any walk-one playing real minutes this year.

Indiana should be an interesting matchup with Michigan. Two fantastic backcourts with question marks in the front court. Clear advantage in the coaching category for Michigan, but otherwise should be quite the contest.

Is #25 really overlooked for a team that didn't make the NIT last season?  Don't get me wrong, I think we'll outperform that #25 ranking, but we are coming off a bad season and we were pretty bad before the injury bug really got going.

Michigan is 43rd overall on Massey as of this morning and 6th overall in the conference - that's based on no data from this season yet, of course, but a middle of the road rating in the conference seems about right. The estimated record based on their calculations right now is 17-12 (it actually reads 17.39-11.61, which is the mean from many simulations as I recall).

Teams change so much as the season goes on. Pre-season rankings take into account what happened LAST YEAR and a bunch of unknown variables, which doesn't make sense to me. Personally I'd rather see rankings come out AFTER teams get done with their non-conference schedules.

last year as it was, this team will be deep and much more seasoned.

We waned at the end of games because we were shorthanded, that won't be the case this year alomg with having the 2 best players back. This could be a very special season like 2 years ago.

Maryland is the clear big dog.

I'd rank them like this

Tier 1 - Maryland - Should be a final 4 team.
Tier 2 - Michigan State will float #6-16 all season.  Michigan after a couple weeks will stay between #10-20 all season.

Tier 3 - Indiana will be in and out of the top 25.  Purdue will be okay, Wisconsin lost a ton.
