Actually, with the

Actually, with the temperature rising beneath Oregon's program, maybe (just matbe) we could muster up some Hokus-Pocus and pull a Roundtree on the Duck's QB. He was a target of ours (not that I know of any interest on his part). Longshot, but maybe Hoke can use some of that voodoo he do so well.

Actually, it's a Cole Porter

Actually, it's a Cole Porter lyrics reference:  "You do Something To Me." Also covered by everyone from Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald. I have no idea about Salt and Peppa.

As I said above, I have no idea if he had any interest in us at any time. I was merely positing that, if we wanted a QB, here's one we previously targeted and missed who might be coming around for a second shot. I'm only speaking to opportunity, not to probability of success.

He seems to be a solid commit, not sure if Hoke wants to go chasin' waterfalls but he ain't too proud to beg either if need be.  We don't for sure need to take a QB so we can be selective, we don't want no scrubs.

Edit: Shit wrong group I was thinking TLC!  Fail.

This is actually a good

This is actually a good thing.

Michigan certainly doesn't NEED a QB in this class given the roster needs. Also, if Russell Bellomy redshirts, he is a de facto 2012 QB. So, I hope the corches fill out other spots.

You know, you say that, and I

You know, you say that, and I tend to agree (who are we really going to get who's worth the scholarship, if not Fuller) but to put on the other hat quickly, recall that Houston lost their first and second string QB's last year...in the same game...in the third game of the year. It can happen. The real question to me is whether you can get someone who really amtters even if the worst should happen. In otherwords, with no Fuller, etc., do you really benefit from having Nick Sheridan Mk. II waiting in the wings.

Yeah, I get what you're

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and it's good to plan for that....but even if Bellomy plays next year, Morris arrives in 2013 and if the need is great they could take 2 QBs in 2013.

As for the injury point, Houston's situation was beyond weird. Put the Cougars aside (not something I do often) - what was the last time Michigan was forced to play its third-string QB as a result of injury (I'm not talking the Feagin experiment in 2008, or the "Gardner lesson" given to Tate last year)? 1985?

I still think 2008 should

I still think 2008 should count, even if you discount the Feagin experiment. Chris Forcier was supposed to be a senior, but transferred when Mallett showed up and instantly passed him on the depth chart. Then Mallett transferred with the coaching change. Ideally Sheridan and Threet would have been third string (at best) QBs had they stuck around, but what happened happened and suddenly they were the best options Rodriguez had.

I doubt something like that would happen again, but if Bellomy doesn't like his spot on the depth chart when Morris shows up, and then Morris gets injured/transfers/bombs out/whatever, the depth chart could get interesting. I don't think an additional line on the depth chart to prevent that would hurt.

The earliest Morris gets to

The earliest Morris gets to campus is January 2013, and the latest is June 2013.  From what I can tell by looking at the calendar...well...I can't, actually, because they haven't made calendars for 2013 yet.  He's anywhere from 18 months to 23 months away from arriving in Ann Arbor.  Anything can happen between now and then, including changing his commitment or (I certainly hope not) a severe injury.  We're all giddy about Jordan Payton decommitting from USC, but we ignore the possibility that it might happen to us.

Not taking a quarterback this year puts us in a very precarious position, especially with one QB who gets hurt 2/3 of the time and another QB who missed most of the year with...ahem...back problems.

I actually agree with Magnus

QB is very important, though with our thin numbers on both lines, and there being so much talent out there, I don't want to turn away a stud DL/OL in order to take a 4th string QB.  That's just my opinion, I of course will back UM with whatever they do.

Well, we have approximately 7

Well, we have approximately 7 or 8 scholarships left to fill.  If you add 2 more offensive linemen and 2 defensive tackles, that leaves 3 or 4 spots for positions that aren't important at all, such as quarterback.

Amen to this...we haven't seen a meaningful snap from Denard...

under Hoke either...if Borges can't adjust (which I think he will - but if he doesn't) we need depth at QB.  There is no surer way to 2008 than to tempt the fates.

Good for him.

Echoing the comments above, Mizzou's offense is a great fit for Mauk.   My guess is that he'll do well there.    I'd also be in favor of just tabling QB recruiting until the fall and seeing if someone moves up the charts or using that schollie on an extra DL/OL stud.

even though i wasnt a big fan of Mauk as a QB he wouldve made a good backup plan. Hopefully we can land Devin Fuller or a surprise QB later in the high school season

You dont go after kids expecting them to be a backup....although sometimes logic does. Wasn't the biggest Mauk fan, sucks to say it but that QB MSU got woulda been a nice option...if it still isn't

Correct me if I'm wrong, but

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Kiel rumored to be between Indiana and Missouri?  Obviously this changes things for him if Missouri was his top choice.  It sounded like Kiel has cut Alabama but now that this has happened, I bet Oklahoma is the favorite.

Missouri wasn't really a serious option for Kiel.  The "front-runners" have always been Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, Indiana, and Michigan (to varying degrees of truth).

Any impact on Gunner Kiel's decision?

I thought GK was thinking about Mizoo too, no?  Wonder if it has any incremental impact on him and his decision.  Can't see Kiel going to IU.  I also amd starting to think Hoke is tempted to is starting to be tempted do the strange (break the QB a year pattern) and not take a QB this year if its not Kiel and then double up next year or the year after.

I thought for sure Kiel was Mizzou bound, also.  If this happens, Oklahoma may be back in the mix and possibly Alabama again.  But IIRC, he wanted to stay closer to home.  Who knows with him -- he's tough to figure out.

It probably means Mizzou's

It probably means Mizzou's out for him but nothing would really surprise me with Kiel. And I wouldn't count out Indiana so quickly; they're close to home, his brother plays there and Oklahoma's OC just became their head coach. All of that plus probable early playing time and there's a lot of reasons why he could choose Indiana.

Also, Rod Smith is your QB

Also, Rod Smith is your QB coach.  Kiel could be the next Pat White.

I can't see Gunner Kiel being

I can't see Gunner Kiel being afraid of competition from Maty Mauk. No offense to Mauk, but Kiel could commit go Mizzou and turn Mauk into a career backup if he wanted to.

Mizzou is just as much

of a spread 'n shred offense as RR runs. Ideal for Mauk, but I can't see Kiel buying into that kind of system. To your point I don't see Kiel shying away from competition either. Apparently he wouldn't compete with his brother, but still have a year or so with him at Indiana, but he likely wouldn't be fazed by Morris either. I wouldn't expect him to commit to a school that already has a qb in the 2012 class, though.

I'm still surprised

I'm still surprised that ND doesn't appear to be anywhere close to being on Kiel's list of finalists.   Given that he's an Indiana kid and that he's got a family history there, I would have thought that ND would have been in his top 5.    Given that Mizzou is one of his finalists, he doesn't appear to be adverse to playing in a spread.

Pinkel might be lousy at powerpoint presentations

But he's got a pretty solid career as a HC under his belt. He was at Toledo for a decade, had just one losing season, with 9-, 10- and 11-win seasons. Mizzou had been more or less moribund since Dan Devine was HC from '58 to '70, and Pinkel's three double-digit win seasons at Mizzou are the first since Devine had 11 in 1960. Yes, Pinkel struggled some in Columbia during the first several years, with two embarrassing losses to Bowling Green along the way, and his less-than-sparkling personality led some disgruntled Mizzou fans to call him Gary Pickle. Since then, perhaps as a result of his Texas recruiting efforts, things have gotten significantly better. Given the fact that the recruiting base in Missouri is not significant, it's hardly a criticism of him that he's dipped down into Texas for recruits. OK has been doing that forever.

Both my parents and my sister were MIzzou grads, my grandfather was a longtime physics professor there, and I spent many summer days in Columbia when I was a kid, so I always root for Missouri. I hope Mauk does well in Pinkel's offense.

The entire Big 12/10 runs on

The entire Big 12/10 runs on Texas athletes. Always has, always will, right up until the day the conference dissolves. You look at the rosters of Iowa State, Nebraska and Kansas St., it's going to be the same story: Texas athletes in unsuspected quantities. If Mizzou is recruiting Texas well, that's to Pincky's credit.

Mauk visited today and then

Mauk visited today and then announced.  (Mizzo is really pulling in an outstanding class).

In something completely unrelated...

Per Josh at Rivals, Kalis is "thinking" about bringing the family to U of M this weekend. hmmmm.

Bellomy is the Key

Bellomy is the key factor.  Borges will get a chance this summer and fall to really see how talented he is and how quickly he picks up things.  I really like the kid, but if he doesn't pan out, we could have a bad scenario in a few years if DG doesn't get his medical redshirt.  We would have Morris as a redshirt Freshman, Bellomy and a true freshman.  I'm also guessing that the true freshman might be difficult to recruit, since not many kids want to follow a 5* star QB.

If Bellomy doesn't look promising this fall, I bet they go after QB pretty hard in this class.

I have a bunch of friends

I have a bunch of friends that follow Mizzou recruiting closely and the strong rumblings there are that Kiel is going to IU.  Mizzou knows this and called Mauk to come on a visit and accepted his committment... time will tell I suppose...

Can we still get Appleby?

Can't we still pick off Austin Appelby from Purdue or another QB recruit from one of the lower tier B1G schools if we don't end up getting Kiel or Fuller?  I thought it was pretty standard for Michigan to make a few late offers to kids already thought committed to fill out areas of need.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Losing Mauk not the end of the world

I'd rather see us use the relatively few remaining scholarships on highly-rated players at other positions of need rather than signing a so-so QB who will probably never play much.  Yes, ideally we should have 4 scholarship QB's at all times.  But, if we have to make due next year with 3, I think it will be OK.  Still, the coaches have a few options:

1.  Wait and see if a better option at QB emerges this fall if a guy lower on the radar "blows up" and has an outstanding senior season.  Then, sign him.

2.  Try and snake oil a top QB away from another school.

3.  Look for a very promising QB prospect and offer him a preferred walk-on deal.  This would only make sense if he's a better player than Kennedy.

But, there's a lot of time between now and February 1st, so we'll see what happens.

What are positions of need?

What are positions of need?  Offensive line, defensive tackle, and...?  We've got safeties and linebackers and cornerbacks and defensive ends and tight ends and running backs and wide receivers (numbers-wise, anyway).

We have the same 85-scholarship limit as everyone else in the country.  I get the feeling that a lot of fans think any position is a position of "need" as long as it doesn't go three-deep with All-Americans.  I just think it's silly when people are like "We need to offer Norfleet so we can have an EIGHTH tailback" and then they don't want to spend an extra scholarship on a fourth quarterback, which just so happens to be the most difficult position in the entire sport. (I'm not saying you're one of those people.)

Great, so we'll have five running backs sitting on the bench every game...and only two quarterbacks as backups before you get to Nick Sheridan-esque walk-ons.

Keil

alot of people have been talking about Keil.  I live in bloomington, and there's an article about him at least once a week.

Here is the biggest reason I think he's not going to Indiana.  His older brother plays here.  He's not that good, but even with a redshirt year of seperation, Gunner would be competing directly against his Dusty during Dusty's junior and senior year.  I just don't see this kid, who seems to be very tight with his brothers, coming to a school where he is going to steal the last two chances his older brother has to play on the D-1 level, and most likely ever again in his life.  How do you go to Christmas and see your family, including the guy you stole his two best years of his life from.

Ok, so this is a bit of an exaggeration, but in all seriousness, I just don't see it happening.  This kid can go anywhere in the country, why would he end up going to one of the worst schools in the BCS thats only 35 minutes away.  The last time IU had a GOOD quarterback was when they had Randel El, and he's about to retire from the NFL now.
