Mattison walks in on meeting between Narduzzi, McDowell

Submitted by Cold War on

On the first day contact was allowed during the latest recruiting period under NCAA rules, Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison and Alabama assistant Bobby Williams were patiently biding their time at the school.

McDowell arrived at school, entered a tiny office and sat against the left wall in the middle of a row of chairs. At a small round table, Narduzzi began speaking, talking about football, about life, about his future in both areas — the door closed for just the two of them.

“Michigan State was here, then Michigan came, they just walked right in and sat down,” McDowell said. “That was pretty funny. I was just sitting there watching … (Coach) Narduzzi was sitting right here. It just all stopped. Then (Mattison) was like, ‘Oh, is this a bad time?’ It made me laugh.”

But it could be A deal changer in a good way. I still feel like we are getting McDowell when all is said and done. Duzzi shit his pants and Malik busted up so I'm assuming that was a great moment to be a fly on the wall. Lol

Just to answer the question, it was an early 2012 meeting of the Michigan High School Football Coaches' Association, I believe, when Jeff Hecklinski was interrupted by Mark Dantonio. As I recall, the reason that Dantonio gave essentially is that he found the tenor of Hecklinski's remarks a little too Michigan-centeic for the occasion. Supposedly, there was a misconception about the format of the forum that was being held which led to this.

In any case, I think that was a totally different situation that what the OP is reporting.

I think this kind of 'unpoliteness' is reasonably common in recruiting. I've heard of this exact 'accident' a few times over the years and I am certain that with the amount of negative recruiting that goes on off the record that this is about as tame as it gets

There is no class anymore. This is a cut throat buisness and you gotta do whatcha' gotta do to get the job done. You want to show class to MSU? So they don't call us scum? They will say we have no class no matter what.  Fuck them and fuck everyone else. We want championships, not friends.

Maybe we would be upset.  And what is wrong with that?

Is this not simply an extension of taking a little time to enjoy OSU losing 5 of the last 6 basketball games?  Just because we wouldn't like it if it were done to us, doesn't mean this is some terribly treacherous act.  It's funny.  To an unbiased observer, it'd be funny if MSU did it to us, even if we didn't like it.  Some people on this board need to start buying their panties a few sizes larger, so they're not constantly riding their cracks.

I thought this was interesting regarding McDowell not taking an official visit to Michigan:

(Malik McDowell won’t officially visit Michigan because “I’ve seen Michigan so many times, it’s unbelievable. I’ve been on an academic tour nine or 10 times.”)

Sam Webb also talked about this issue on today's recruiting roundup thanks to a question from Don. Sam also emphasized that the entire McDowell family was not present for MSU's in-home visit yesterday, in contrast to the in-homes with FSU and Michigan, where the entire family was or would be present—perhaps signaling that this recruitment is trending away from MSU.

I like our chances with that comment.

Some kids say it is about academics and then commit to some skool (Bama) wit no learnin. Touring Michigan "nine or 10 times" away from the football facilities means he's serious about it. His parents like Michigan for this reason, so they've most likely been impressed by the tours. Having parents not around for in home visits says a lot, especially when the entire family is there for Michigan's visit.

I will be surprised if he doesn't come here.

or would this have been douchey if it was something an MSU coach did to us? I love Mattison. And yes, swag for days. But I just keep thinking this sounds like a Dantonio-y attention grab.

Please, prove me incorrect.
