Don't over analyze this. It's a good thing. Run with it...

They have the players, but coaching said players is very crucial, and playcalling as well, as good players just don't go out there and "wing it." That, and he'll help recruiting... We need that.

The fear of Ray Lewis decapitating any recruit who dares to go elsewhere.
I get your larget point. GERG's resume minus Syracuse was strong and ticked some of the same boxes (DC at major college program and NFL), however this is the first time in a few weeks that I've felt optimistic about anything Michigan football related, so I'm going to go with that for now.

Realistically, I think this hire was the best we were going to do. Hoping for Shannon or similar names wasn't realistic. Better than having the Hokester's brother which was a real concern of mine. My list is basically:
1. DC experience in the NFL
2. Coached a great NFL defense for 2 years
3. Has enough "sizzle" to attract recruits
4. Demonstrated success at the collegiate level at a number of big-time BCS programs
4. Isn't the Hokester's brother
In my mind that makes for a pretty damn good hire. True he is a little old and seems to be a bit conservative, but I can get over that
January 18th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
...he's had a long track record as a successful college DC and was co-defensive coordinator for one of Florida's National Championships, so he has college success to go with the NFL pedigree, so its certainly a good hire, and not just for the Ravens connection...

It just got a little more interesting.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:57 PM ^
Can we really think that this is better than a retread former HC that was fired and comes with his own stuffed animal mascot. Oh please...
Fantastic news. Hoke is batting 1.000. He got Denard committed now Mattison. He does seem to have a way to get people on board and to believe!!
Seems like the Michigan coach hating God has left town. God Bless America and Michigan Football.

Sounds good. But why is G2 leaving one of the best D jobs in the NFL? Was he nudged ?
January 18th, 2011 at 7:02 PM ^
Quite frankly, he's probably a little more comfortable in a college environment.
It's gotta be tough on a guy when the players on his defense routinely drop F bombs on him. I heard it at least 5-6 times this season with my own ears. Once by Suggs in a way that was waaaaaaaaaaay outta line.
As it is in most sports, the pro game is a different animal.

perhaps he loves michigan football and simply wanted to come back...

I criticized Hoke earlier for bringing in assistants with no ties to M after having said everyone on his staff would be people with a fanatical love for M. This is a great move by Hoke. Well done Coach.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:09 PM ^
FWIW, the interwebz suggest that he and coach Hoke are good friends and that his daughter lives in Ann Arbor and is expecting a child. I'm guessing those aren't the only reasons for the move, but would give some good incentive.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
Maybe somewhere in the 180 posts this has already been said, but...

Hoke's two coordinators are both senior well established coaches as opposed to young hot shots. This strikes me as a really smart move on his part given his own resume.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:49 PM ^
...Ferrigno has been around since 1980, and at least 14 of those years featured coaching ST in some way.

Never be the guy who replaces the legend? Be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces the legend.
Greg Mattison was promoted to defensive coordinator of the Ravens after the departure of beloved DC Rex Ryan.
Greg Mattison comes to Michigan as defensive coordinator to replace the sacked Greg Robinson.
This should be a cakewalk, right?
January 18th, 2011 at 7:04 PM ^
Absolutely 100% correct.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:13 PM ^
candidates for our next DC opening should be wary of replacing Mattison.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:05 PM ^
This is a home run in the status category. It says volumes about Hoke, his lack of ego, and the committment he has to Michigan being a championship program.
Not ready to comment on it from an x and o's perspective, but this is a nuclear warhead move for recruiting and for serving notice to our rivals that we mean business.

...and they lived happily ever after
January 18th, 2011 at 7:08 PM ^
According to the Ravens website, Mattison's daughter, Lisa, lives in Ann Arbor and is expecting a child soon. I'm happy for him.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
He's definitely got a "no nonsense" look about him

Mattison has constantly issued a heavy dose of great defense in ALL his stops. LET'S GET ITTT in 2011
January 18th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
and think its a good fit. BH can work with the defense on the lines, Mattison can coach period! This is how we all should look at this hire. Mattison can pitch to the young kids how he has experience, clearly able to coach NFL players. Shoot in a perfect world, Greg pops in a highlight reel of defensive schemes of the Baltimore Ravens. Recruits will see what he can do with the Ray Lewis' , Ngata's, and Reeds and sign up!
January 18th, 2011 at 7:13 PM ^
Does anyone know if Mattison was involved in recruiting Charles Woodson, or was that before his time?
Also, was he fired after 1996 or did he leave?
Love this hire - this guy was coaching Ray Lewis a week ago and that has to mean something to recruits. My only reservation is that he has coached very talented defenses for pretty much his entire DC career, so I'm not sure how he'll do in a more, um, "challenging" situation. That is splitting hairs, though - he looks like he knows what he's doing.

Tackeling will (hopefully) be a nonissue from here on out. And hopefully we can have a uber aggressive defense. For some reason I got an image of Roh coming off the edge and giving Pryor whiplash as he is driven into the turf as soon as I heard this..
Yay for future hello posts caused by this hire!
January 18th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
Not just tackling, but tickling will be a nonissue as well.

This is an absolutely tremendous hire. Best news in a long loooooooooooooooong time.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:41 PM ^
Great, great news. We got ourselves some recruiting "street cred" now. And for all those so anxious to bury the Michigan Man era. . .you were wrong. It's still a strength and the exact place we needed to turn in our darkest hour.

Let's please call Mattinson, 'GM' as in The General Manager, as in The General. Let us never call him Gerg or some variation of that. Let's put that to rest forever. Let's take that name, place it in a boat, send it to sea, then shoot a flaming arrow into the vessel.

I'm hoping we have a few more African American hires; aka a more diverse staff as well.
