Mattison article

Submitted by PeteM on

When Mattison agreed to come back as a defensive line coach during the transition i thought that it was good sign, and the resutls on the field (especially from Wormley) seem to bear that out.  Anyway, I thought that this article was interesting, and that the quotes from Godin support the idea Mattison sticking around has helped make what was likely to be a good defense a potentially great one.

They where comparing to this time last year and yes the D line looked better against Utah and Oregon state than it did again App. State, Notre Dame and miami Ohio. Chris Wormley alone through two games has better stats than he did all last year combined 11 tackles 6 TFL and 1 sack ( thought he had 2-3 sacks but i'm wrong). We haven't had anyone play even close to this on the inside since Martin graduated

Notre Dame is a good example here. I don't think they were any better than Utah is this year. Sure the environment, rivalry and all that, but no way last year's team goes into Utah and hangs in there. We probably would have seen another Notre Dame type blow out, in which I still want to die from.

The D is very good. As good as any in the B1G. This team is a good QB and explosive RB from being in the 4 team playoffs. National Champs in 2016

I like your confidence but come on. Do you really believe that this D is as good as OSU or MSU? I seem to remember us having a problem stopping a 6'7 white QB from running all over us like Vince Young. I don't want to slob their knob like corn on the cob, but OSU is loaded with top flight talent at every position on their D. I like the potential for this years D, but let's not crown them already. I agree on 2016 though. Harbaugh!!

That 6'7 white qb was one of the greatest qb's with his fakes that I've ever seen. I was constantly fooled about who had the ball by that guy, I'm sure the D was also because he was great in the ball handling aspect. He's also quick, shifty & pretty speedy, with good vision, and he made the right cuts.

Harbaugh needs to teach that kind of ball handling to his qb's. It makes it harder to defend everything.

Touche. A little different though. I'm just saying I wouldn't get overly confident in this D. I watched a 6'7 athletic qb (I shouldn't have said white) run on us and it exposed a weakness. In my eyes there's still a lack of game changing athletic ability in our front seven. First game I know and I still think they're going to be damn good.

but I think we're about the same as 12, 13 & 14 except a slight upgrade in some areas and a slight downgrade in others. Utah seems like a borderline top-25 team to me and Ore St. is atrocious before having no QB - everywhere. We actually allowed so few points/yards in the 2nd half due possession, lack of talent and they being so one dimensional, IMO. We did what we should have on the minimal vs that team. I don't want to sounds negative because I think we have a decent defense with the ability to improve but it's not elite in any area. Elite offenses (or those that specialize in an area) will still carve us up, IMO. Lack of a consistent pass rush, turnovers and talent being issues. I hope confidence comes from last week and this week but not arrogance or complacency. We're not THAT good lol.

but I don't drink the Kool-aid! I'm lying. Who doesn't like Kool-aid? I have zero shame I'm admitting that I have Michigan Football PTSD. None and I overlook no team and give no credit until repeated for most of a season. That said, I'm of the mind of those that agree, or rather get what I mean in that I think we need to at least show it vs a quality team. I hate saying it but we could (should, IMO) have beat Utah! I didn't think we would but they weren't that great. Yet, when they had to move they found a way and wore us down. I didn't "like the feel" going into the last game so I was angrily unsurprised by the 1st quarter but deep down I had no doubt we'd win. We played great but most teams have a QB and an OL that weighs considerably more than said QB. They didn't. I'll hold off on even thinking we're anything above a "solid" defense for now. Yet, I'm always keeping the kool-aid cold. I assure you all.

Agreed. Let's see the D shut down a quality opponent before we get too excited. In the last decade we have maybe 2 or 3 wins against teams that finished in the top 15. How fucking pathetic is that? People have forgotten how far we have fallen that even being mediocre seems like an achievement.

I love Mattison. And I hope he sticks around for a long time. Great coach. I realize it isn't popular, but you know, I think the defense would have still been decent this year under Hoke. Because the defense would belong to Mattison. It takes some time to get everything working right. Thing is, I am pretty sure that Mattison is very happy cutting back a little bit, and being the defensive line coach.

Ummh, one thing that I believe is helping the defense is Michigan's offense. I know that Brian isn't a big time of possession guy. But I really believe that because Michigan's offense has stayed on the field longer, the defense doesn't get overextended and exhausted. Michigan's time of possession was 38:01. Oregon State's time of possession was 21:59. In other words, Michigan's offense was on the field about 2 minutes for every minute Oregon State was there. Michigan's defense was well rested, and this really showed in the second half. Mattison couldn't do anything about the offense, but the defense was worn out too often last year. If Harbaugh, Drevno, Rudock, and the OL can continue to extend drives and score, this is going to be huge for the defense, and allow Mattison (and Durkin) to be even more aggressive.
