Matt Millen says MSU is a contender for a National Championship

Submitted by Griff88 on

I couldn't make this up if I wanted to. Maybe Millen thinks that MSU is leaving the country, and playing teams around the pacific rim. I could see MSU becoming National Champions of China, although I think Shanghai  would give them a pretty good run. How Millen continues to collect a paycheck, is one of the greatest mysteries of our time.

Maybe what he meant was that every team is a contender until the season starts.

During his unfortunate color commentary of a michigan game (vs uconn I think), Millen said: "If you had 11 Mike Martin's, then you would win the game"........

I don't trust anything this guy says, and the last time he contributed anything positive was as a player.

This is a dark horse list.  MSU had 11 wins last year and they return a decent core.  It's not the worst pick in the world.  They face OSU without their starters and coach.  Maybe a ND team without Floyd.  A lot of other teams lose a lot of talent, including Iowa, Wisc, etc.  They have a chance to win the division in Nebraska slips up or something.  I'm not saying they are going to, but it's not the most heinious thing Millen has said/done.  I find it worse that he has Boise on that list.  Boise isn't a dark horse anymore, people know about them.  I also think Nebraska and Ok. State are solid choices, and Arkansas isn't a terrible choice (lots of offensive talent and their backup QB showed he could step in and play last year when Mallet went down).

Let me repeat, I don't think MSU is a title contender.  I do think they have an outside chance at a division title though and if things fall their way and they get that, they are one win away from a BCS bowl.  I don't see it happening, but crazier things have happened and this is a dark horse list.  Personally I think they still lose a few, including to OSU.

I'm also sure not a lot of thought went into the list more than, "what teams did pretty well last year that most people wouldn't think of and don't lose their whole team," in which case MSU fits that criteria pretty well.

MSU was a fraud as an 11 win  team. The games against Iowa and Alabama were the proof. Then on top of that MSU loses the two guys who were the heart and soul of their defense and a couple of starting linemen.  Make no mistake about it, even as a darkhorse pick, this is an idiotic statement by Millen.

To paraphrase Millen, "Well, except for the defensive holes and the holes on their offensive line and getting Notre Dame-Nebraska-Ohio State back-to-back-to-back and then the rest of their schedule, they look like a contender to me."

Worst part about this: if and/or when MSU's season falls apart, there will be State fans who legitimately blame Millen for their struggles.

should be ashamed of himself for what he did to the Lions andfor  accepting money as a professional football analyst.  And so should Andre Ware for accepting that first round pick from the Lions.

Sure, they're a contender. Mullen has his system working down there and they bring back Relf, Ballard, and most of a strong defense...

Oh, he meant Sparty. Evaluating a team based on its record the year before and returning passing/rushing/receiving yards leaders usually works ok as a quick and dirty method, but you'd expect a highly paid analyst to notice that they weren't nearly as good as their record last year and lose most of their OL along with Jones and most of their other leading tacklers.
