My biggest problem with him was not that he was a terrible GM, it's that he knew he was a terrible GM and took advantage of an senile old man (Ford) to keep collecting a big paycheck. I know it's idealistic as all hell of me to say, but he should have resigned. Bill Jr. had to publicly humiliate his own father for a move to get made.

The late Tom Kowalski implied on a number of occassions that Millen was a very sweet talker to Old Man Ford, convincing him he would right the ship when even he probably didn't believe it anymore and he also implied that Mayhew has been a much harder worker than Millen ever was.

OK -- first off, not a Lions fan -- secondly, I'll be honest, Millen never bugged me as a TV guy.  Having said that, his "emotion" on ESPN today was completely staged and I laughed when I saw it.  Millen is also on the board of Sandusky's charity (also, Marky Mark is on it).

staged?  give me a break dude.. someone that was a mentor to him and his position coach is probably going to jail for raping young children..  You think he had to stage his emotions on tv? you are an idiot, whether you like millen or not

was it staged...

I saw it live, and couldn't pull away from the TV--BUT--Switch26 hit it on the head...This guy was a mentor to Millen, and imagine digesting that someone you admired as a young man, and into adulthood could committ these acts.  These are acts from a monster.  I would hardly think crying on national TV in the business of conducting your job, would be what you would want to do--AND, considering hearing the acts makes people want to vomit, cry, whatever--AND they were committed by someone you looked up to--there is NO WAY that was staged.  No Way.  What?? because its so difficult to force a tear for those countless boys? and the embarassment how leadership did nothing???  NOTHING!! FUCKING NOTHING!!!!!  shit.

Even a blind squirrel...

I expect Millen to be pissed/emotional. This is a case of the worst nature, and it's really unthinkable for him to not say the right things.

That does not change the fact that he was a horrible GM or considered Gholston justified. Maybe "some" respect actually means like .0001 or something.

Get over it....IF this horrible story does anything, it tells us to put sports in a proper perspective...most of the time, we don't need that point of reference, but sometimes it is needed. How many times have people wished injuries on an opponent for example?

Millen was a horrible GM, but is a great person overall, by all accounts. I judge people first on the merits of being a rational and moral person first and a (in)competent athlete/manager second. That is something positive that I will take out of this tragedy.

That's just like your opinion, man. However, you are right, so I should explain. I do not think of Matt Millen as a social commentator. He is a football analyst. My opinion of Matt Millen is my opinion of Matt Millen the football analyst. To say that Matt Millen gained respect is to include Matt Millen in a class of something more than football analyst. However, the OP did not state that Matt Millen gained respect; the OP stated that Matt Millen regained respect. If we agree that this current action reflects something other than football commentary, I think the OP has committed a logical error unless the OP had an opinion of Matt Millen the social commentator. As far as Matt Millen "the guy," I am in no position to critique his private life and will therefore abstain.

I don't know man.  Yeah he got emotional.  I get emotional, too, when I think about tragedy happening to my kids.  Just the other night I woke up from a dead sleep because I dreamed my daughter got hit by a car.  I get emotional when I think about bad things happening to children at the hands of men who prey on them.

But Millen sat on the board of Sandusky's foundation.  There were reports of incidents happening back in 1998 and again in 2002.  Why is Millen getting emotional now?  If he wanted to take care of himself, why didn't he do that over the last 9 - 13 years?

I think it has to do with reports that the investigation into Sandusky's potential child molestation in 1998 was widely known by people connected to PSU.  Considering Millen is on the board, it is reasonable he would know what is going on with Sandusky.

And the guy retired unexpectedly in 1999 in the prime of his career....that sort of thing raises red flags.

Yeah, because before I thought he would condone child rape based on his being a bad football GM, but now i know he doesn't

I don't like raping kids either.  I would like it a hell of a lot less if someone who were very, very close to me were damningly accused of it.  I think you're making the common mistake of not taking into account the relationship between Sandusky and the other people in the story.  Millen's more than just a neutral commentator or bystander and Sandusky isn't just some old guy.  Indirectly, Millen and all the people who worshiped Sandusky are victims as well.  You think they might have a right to be a little more emotional or freaked out or conflicted than the rest of us?

I might not like Millen as a football guy, but I believe he spoke from his heart there.

This issue is a disaster for PSU on many levels.  I feel bad for the kids, all of the kids.  The kids that were directly affected and the ones that are in the football program now.  The whole thing is painful to think about let alone watch unfold.

If it is true, Joe has got to go!

Millen hasn't done his due diligence, either. The rumor have been out there for a while--people were talking about it on this board months ago, right?

Millen's statement along the lines of "Man's inhumanity to man, where do we stop with this stuff" rings a little untrue after he endorsed the twisting of a defenseless players head by the faskmask.

It was very tough to watch his interview with McKendry earlier when he got choked up. Clearly what has been transpiring in the recent days at Penn State bothers him.

No reason why he has to apologize for being emotional. Now for what he did to the Lions? That's a different story.
