Peace out bro, UM will survive
Tennessee is not recruiting well just because they got 18 dudes
Peace out bro, UM will survive
As long as we can avoid needing game-winning field goals.
We still have Gibbons. I think he will greatly improve.
According to his highschool profile he has a pretty good leg. So I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that as he get older, his mental toughness and approach to his craft matures. Also, hopefully he has adjusted to being a student athlete in college.
His technique is horrendous. His plant foot is never in the right spot and if you watch on his follow though he isn't on balance. He doesn't hit the ball in the right spot and his kicking-foot-angle is bad. I've even seen his plant foot roll over onto it's side on follow-through as he leaned to the SIDE. Sometimes he leans back/fades away. It's terrible.
And the real indictment that he stinks is that he can't kick off. The ball is where it is on the tee. There are no moving parts, no snapper or holder to blame it on and you get a tee. If you can't figure out how to kick off right, and/or don't have the leg to get it far enough down field while being high enough, you should not be kicking at a B1G school, and certainly not at Michigan.
If you are looking for reasons to improve, poor technique is as good as it gets. All of those things that you said he is doing wrong are all things that through practice he can improve on.
lefty. Lefty kickers always seem a tad unstable*
*I am a lefty myself so it's ok for me to rip on one of my own "kind."
I played against John Hall in high school and he was horrific. He had a strong leg (put every kickoff through the goal posts) but couldn't hit a field goal to save his life. I was shocked when I heard he was going to Wisconsin, but alas, he obviously got coached up there and had a pretty good professional career. You can't coach leg strength, but you can coach technique and mental approach (to some extent). If they lock up a better, more reliable kicker, great, if not, they have to work with what they have so hopefully there will be someone there to coach them up.
RR didn't even employ a kicking coach. The kickers all just practiced on their own, obviously it wasn't working. Hell we even had a kicking coach in high school. I guess my point is there probably is room for the current kickers to improve.
Little secret: Michigan hasn't had a dedicated special teams coach since the Jim Boccher debacle.
Nobody has a kicking coach. With only nine coaches allowed on staff, nobody sets aside a dedicated one for a kicker.
lol greatly improve? He has been on campus for two years.. we don't have a kicking coach.. and you think he is going to get better?
If we go into this next year god help this team
I'm sure Hoke could borrow a laptop, find a how-to-kick video on youtube, set it on the field during practice and Gibbons would have the opportunity for the same amount of improvement if we had hired a kicking coach.
Theres got to be another kicker out there that we can nab...
still hasn't committed, was high on his Michigan offer, ranked above Goudis in Rivals, wants U with good academics, etc.. (I know, I'm getting repetitious. My kicker-hope mantra.)
EDIT: Ah. Others already remembered him below.
Reality TV Show: Michigan Kicker.
Maybe he'll change his mind for USC next week. Fickle little fella. He is reminding me of my wife. Um, ah I mean always changing his mind, not so much the way he looks.
Speaking of USC, ESPN has an article about how they have a boatload of top level recruits coming in along with an explanation on how they are able to recruit so many despite the "probation" terms levied upon them.
For another kick while you're down, it also talks about how Brian Kelly is getting his type of recruits.
No mention on how the national impact of Brady Hoke being brought on as coach is causing many recruits to look at Michigan's football program however.
its not like we even knew if he could actually make them in the big house,, see ya goudis, good luck.
what are the chances we sign another kicker? or that get any new name big time recruits?
killer press conferences and basketball game appearances! So we got that goin' for us. Which is nice.
YTM or NNTM?
Al Golden Shower, plz stop stealing our recruits, thx.
Loftus is still uncommitted...
Yeah, and he only has offers from M, Boise St, UNC, Airforce, Navy and NCSU. Of those, I think the choice is obvious, especially because he apparently cares a lot about academics and has a 4.9 GPA.
So what are we down to now?? About 10 kids or so...good thing the last 2 weekends have been cancelled....not like those would have had any impact on this class or anything.
Just really dreadful right now...I really hope completely killing a recruiting class was all worth it.
Did Signing Day come and pass already, or are you just being a melodramatic fool?
you often post a lot of BS on this site and for the most part I just let it go but this is insane. I know you wanted RR gone and are all over Hoke's jock (which is fine, there isn't anything wrong with getting behind the new coach) but if you are attempting to imply that all the shit that has transpired since the OSU game hasn't impacted recruiting simply because NSD hasn't come and gone yet you are beyond help.
Do you really need to see a finished product in order to determine that something has been impacted? If you were building a house and found out after the foundation was poured that it wasn't level, would you keep building on it? Because by your rationale, you wouldn't be able to be sure there was a problem until the product was finished.
If you can't see and admit, based on the fact that D. Hart, A Zettel, K Frost, M Goudis etc have all left for other teams, that this has had a massive effect on recruiting this year you are either being wilfully ignorant or know aboslutely nothing about college football.
I have been watching college football for over 25 years so I know something about it.
One of the benefits of not being 20 years old anymore is that you wait until something has happened before you pass judgment on it.
There are still 2 1/2 weeks before Signing Day, how about waiting before we whine.
And yes, I realize what has happened has affected recruiting. I also understand that me whining about it and passing judgment on people about it means nothing in the grand scheme of life.
If the rip out the foundation and repour it..and the house turns out great in the end..then yes your crying before it was finished was pointless.
We lost some recruits. It would have happened whether RR was fired in Nov or Jan. Has there been a year in the past 3 where we didnt have some recruits decommit? Not to mention half the guys you mentioned never comitted here in the 1st place.
we might lose Jake Fisher, Beyer, Kellen Jones, and Blake Countess have already lost Dallas Crawford and Dee Hart, ahd have lost out on Zettel, Kris Frost, Avery Walls, Jack Tabb and a number of other guys.
We have a shot at adding Chris Bryant, maybe Kris Frost because Auburn won't take him, and Devin Lucien.
There is essentially no way whatsoever that this class will end up a top 25 class, and I think we're allowed to talk about that even though signing day hasn't yet passed.
it is a board for talking about things related to the Michigan football program. One of the things related to Michigan football is the 2011 recruiting class, which is a shambles.
When did this site get so Panglossian?
and is going to Miami next week.
Do I think we lose him? Probably not. But he's visiting Miami (YTM), and it's January. That is never a good thing.
Sometimes the sky actually is falling.
Actually, the sky has never fallen.
Once upon a time not too long ago, the near-unanimous consensus among MGoBlog posters and commenters was that Zettel was basically a lock for Michigan.
You're probably correct that Beyer and Jones will not decommit, but I'm not sure your supremely confident dismissal of any chance that they could go elsewhere is warranted.
Small recruiting classes are a reality of coaching changes.
Year 1 classes for big name schools/coaches:
LSU/Miles - 13 (averages @ 26)
tOSU/tressel - 15
Florida/Meyer - 16
It's not the rule, but very common to take a big hit with a coaching change. Roll with it, Kitchin doesn't help.
All of those programs were in significantly better positions player-personnel-wise and recent success-wise than Michigan is currently. They could "afford" to have the small of a class and be ok. If we get 10 guys in this class we will be roughly 10 scholarship players under the limit for the team next year, then graduating a lot in that next class and may not be able to make it up with the next class. So...theoretically, we could be short on scholarship players for 3 seasons. AWESOME. Way to self-impose sanctions DB.
those who stay (committed) will be champions.
I know Bo coined it, but those that have stayed haven't been champions in a long time on the football field. Only mantra I hate more is "Michigan man" which the MSM and some alums have made to be something that Bo didn't intend.
That's the weird thing about some traditions sometimes they become irrelevant. I remember helmet stickers, frozen marshmallows being tossed, toilet paper rolls missing from the RH bathrooms on game day.
Maybe academics couldn't compete with beaches?
has beautiful beaches!
Yes, but they have hurricanes....
+100000 for a Waiting for Godot reference.
Nothing like a dong punch by your own AD.
I believe he grew up in Florida, and still has family in the area..
Goudis was born in the Florida area,.. Miami is no.1 for Crawford now, he's gone,... recruiting is gonna be ugly for the next 2-3 weeks,...man hope we don't lose Kellen Jones commitment....and Fisher switching to Mich. State WHo ?...
Brand new start to the week and getting bad news already,....a Kicker & QB are needed come NSD......
Boise State fans are reading this and having a good laugh.
the kid but isn't this his third commitment to a program? Any predictions on which school he chooses next?
Did anyone notice any snake oil at the salvation army sale yesterday?
Does Purdue have another recruit worth poaching?
Not sure, but I would rather he poach recruits from a mid-level B1G team than a mid-level MWC team.
I'd say this kicker isn't very dependable.
Matt Goudis = the 2011 recruiting cycle's Josh Huff (Boise to Minnesota to TCU to Oregon in 4 months last year).
A coaching change shouldn't affect them too much. And in this case, the job was practically his to win. He seemed solid before the CC, so how could a change in coaches affect him that badly?
Personally, I'd rather kick field goals in south Florida than the midwest, but he seemed okay with Boise and A2 weather.
It's not like Goudis is a guy like Fisher or Beyer--- guys who grew up in Michigan, wanted to go to Michigan and committed early. Goudis has only been committed for about three weeks and that was right after breaking a commitment from another school- a school that he said he was solid on right before breaking his commitment to them.
I think this is more about Matt Goudis than it is about Michigan. I don't say that to rag on the guy, it's more that he's just looking for the best situation and felt that it was Miami. I don't think it has much to do with the CC or even Michigan at all.
our coach isn't who he thought it would be when he committed (no, not Rich Rod).
Raymon Taylor has already set up an official visit to Pitt. I tell you, I'm all for extending full faith to Hoke, but whatever he is doing, he doesn't seem to be locking these kids down. I'm not really thinking about Goudis, that kid is obviously a mercenary little weasel, but even the recruits who more or less wanted a nod and a handshake are already casting about for other options. i mean, why couldn't we have official visits this weekend? Pitt hired their (Mk. II) coach one day before us, and they're having a big group of official visits this weekend, and apparently, more of our recruits next weekend.
Has coach Hoke talked to Taylor yet? I would think he would be talking to some of the commits before the uncommitted. Give the guy a chance, he hasn't been at work for a week yet.
Is that he's been on the job for one day less than Pitt's coach, but Pitt's coach is already wining and dining Bryant and Taylor. One day should not make that much of a diiference. Meanwhile, the Bryant's and Taylor's of the world, who've been waiting for so long, are starting to think they've waited long enough. I like Hoke, I wasn't against his hire, etc., but I don't think it was wise to cancel the visits this weekend.
Good point. I forgot about Pitt and their new coach. Does Pitt have their staff in place. I know they hired Gibson and Magee, which probably helped with Taylor and Bryant.
All I am saying is this. I told myself that I don't expect anything from him until next week on the recruiting front. After today, he should have his staff in place and have talked to all the current players. The current players are the most important right now. I expect him to hit the recruiting road next week with staff in place.
I'm not sure if Pitt's staff is complete now, but I know it wasn't when they started setting up visits. It seems to be a question of philosophy, or energy, if you prefer: Todd G. wanted to get the kids in Pittsburgh so they could hear his pitch, see the campus and the Cathedral of Learning, see Heinz Field...and, not by coincidence, the Steelers playing IN Heinz Field in a playoffs game. Compared to all, having you positions coach in place seems trivial. Having your staff complete doesn't matter if the recruits have drifted elsewhere. I'd rather have Hoke bring them up and sell them on Mkchigan now and let them meet the remaining staff later than visa versa.
I see your point. IMHO, maybe he wants to get his ducks in line with the staff to further help him with recruiting. The recruits and commits are probably jsut as interested as who their HC is as well as their position coaches. I think Pitt got a little bit of a jump because both these guys may have ahd relationships with their new coaches. I understand your concern. I think if you were making this statement on Tuesday, I would be completely in the same boat. Maybe he never experienced this when moving to SDSU. If that is true then that is on DB more than him.
The other problem is when you have more of an unknown coach, maybe it is better to have all the pieces together before hitting the road. I know I am winging it here.
Has scheduled a visit with Michigan as well. Hoke's first job is the team, then the recruits. I do know that he is contacting the "commits", and I also heard that Fred Jackson is already on the road recruiting.
Breaking News....Goudis to Eastern Washington...rumor has it he loves the red field turf.....
Hoke's failure to name a big name kicking coordinator is kiling us!!!!!! .. or something like that.
Your task, Mr Hoke, should you choose to accept, is to undo the damage David Brandon did to this recruiting class. If you are captured or killed, the IMF will disavow any knowlege of your actions. This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Mr Hoke.
David Brandon is big on having a process so this must be rubbing off on Hoke. Before talking to recruits you need to look at 5000 hours of tape. You know thet Rivals, ESPN, Lemming and Scout don't know what they are doing so you have to create that round object known as the wheel first.
Question for those in the know. I understand we have one EE. Does he count against last year's class? If so, how many open spots are there for this year's class, if we assume we do not suffer additional decommits from this point?
It doesn't matter. We don't have enough scholarships available to sign a full class anyway.
The Goudis carousel?
Damn you, Al Golden!
We really haven't cursed Golden enough yet. May his name be stricken from every writing! May his family be driven into the wilderness! May his children's children bewail this day! Sound the horn of ostracism!
At least we still have Savodrick Beaver.
j/k....congrats. warmer weather and free college enjoy...but when you see what you could have had at UM you may regret!
Has someone told this kid to get over himself, he is a kicker.
"You're a kicker, dude, get over yourself!!"
Yeah, but, I kinda want a good kicker.
hopefully Hoke can bring in one bad ass kicking coach lol
Goudis said last week he would be switching to miami and it would not matter what M's new coach had to say. This was before the hire of hoke. He was not coming here. Period. According to Goudis.
Goudis was coming to Michigan, as a Rodriguez recruit. He changed his mind when Rodriguez was fired. Goudis didn't decommit because Hoke was hired, but he did decommit when Rodriguez was fired.
Straight from DB's book on semantics...
I'd be happy to be corrected if the timeline isn't right, but there was a week between the firing of Rodriguez and the hiring of Hoke. One, hellish, awful,gut-destroying week. And that was when Matt Goudis surpised no one with his decision to visit Miami (that may have been in the works for a while) and to decommit from Michigan to reopen his recruitment for a shot at one of Miami's 147 scholarships still available.
I just wanted to be clear on who or what might have been blamed. I don't want to blame "Brady Hoke" for stuff that had nothing to do with him. I do want to heap all of the correctly-placed blame on everybody involved with the firing of Rich Rodriguez.
If you want to criticize Brandon about the transparently phony business of what an "offer" really is; be my guest. I won't disagree with you.
So obviously, you must blame the freep for all that is happening.
Can he just be both our punter and kicker?
says that a kicker might walk on this year...
Sweet! Thanks man! I hope its true
Is there any chance that Brady Hoke focus on the state of Michigan gives them a chance at landing Kyle Brindza.
Why does this absurd notion that we haven't been recruiting in Michigan continue to persist?
Rodriguez always went after in-state kids he thought fit with what he was trying to accomplish.
I agree with the gist of your post, but Rodriguez never offered Brindza. It's a reasonable question.
That being said...there's virtually no chance that Brindza would come to Michigan, even if offered.
For UM, the kicker position is a little like a MLB bullpen...there are few guarantees with respect to performance from year to year, eand ven though you might spend $ (in UM's case a scholarship) on the position, there's not much comfort it will be an improvement.
No, they simply cannot go into the season just hoping that one of the current kickers will work out. They need to get out there and either snake-oil a commit away from another school or try to get CL. I appreciate the odds Hoke is facing here. But this position is, in many ways, the most crucial right now.
Won't Jim Harbaugh be bringing us a fab California kicker when he comes?
I cannot think of one game this past season where a field goal kicker would have made a difference. That is not to say we don't need one. But until we become competitive, field goal kickers are not a first priority.
Also, they are a time a dozen. Just have to do a better job finding and teaching them. If I am not mistaken, Gibbons was highly rated and we all know how he has fared.
I am not sure you can say that. Direct impact, maybe not, indirect impact may have cost us a few games. Having to go for it on every 4th down inside the 30 puts alot of pressure on both the offense and defense.
we made the first down by going for it on fourth. There is a book written by a statistician who claims coaches should go for it on fourth down more often. Those that do, often are more successful than not.
Also, even if you had an excellent kicker, in college their averages are not that great especially when they are 30 yards and out.
Finally, when you are saddled with a woeful defense three points is irrelevant.
If you don't think that Iowa game was affected by the kicking game at all, then I don't think you're knowledgeable enough about football to be posting here. You might want to sit out for a little bit. That's not to mention the number of times we had to forgo a field goal while we were in normal field goal range, it was 4th and long, and we turned it over on downs after a good drive and came up with 0 points. That is demoralizing for a team.
A remarkable logic exercise, Sir. Congratulations.
I wanted Connor Loftus more anyway
Wanted to come to UM because the academics were so good. Gues that was a bunch of bull....Miami??? Aint much for academics there. I don't think he would have been that good.
Hoke is not a big name.. Period. If you look at his record, 47-50, it doesn't scream success. When RR left wvu, he was 11-1, one loss away from the national championship. It it easier to sell that to an 18 year old instead of just making promises that he may or not be able to keep. Kids now want success instantly. That is how society has raised them. To most, tradition means nothing. It will bevhard for hoke to recruit these next couple years until he has a track record of winning. Since we have set the bar at three years to win the B10, if doesnt get there, he will be out also.
If you meet a girl (Matt Goudis) and she has a boyfriend (Boise State) but she starts sleeping with you (Michigan) behind her boyfriends back.. and then leaves her boyfriend for you and tells you she only wants to be with you ... dont be surprised when she leaves you for the next guy (Miami).
Connor Loftus is still available and was beaten to the punch by Goudis on the offer. I think he will take it if Hoke decides to use another scholarship on a kicker.
2005 Paw Paw MI. H.S. graduate/minor league baseball player Derrick Mitchell plans to walk on in the spring. Mike Gillette arranged this with Rod before Rod was fired.
Soon to be Alpena MI. H.S. graduate Garrett Mead plans to try and walk on in the fall as a kicker as well.
It doesn't matter because according to various press conferences and interviews, we're gonna have "toughness" and we're gonna "get after it" next year with someone who "understands what Michigan is all about." So a catastrophic fustercluck of a recruiting class won't matter.
I'm amused everytime there's a decommitment and the doom-folk come out. No wonder Black Heart, Gold Pants think we should be on collective suicide watch.
As for Goudis, his offer from Miami came after he committed to Michigan. He was going to end up at Miami no matter what. He has family in the area, etc. I suppose we'll go after Loftus now.
Gibbons is a lost cause. The fact that he ever got a scholarship offer at any level of college football astounds me, let alone an offer from Michigan. His technique is horrible. Really, really horrible. Broekhuizen's form isn't all that appalling, and perhaps he'll make a mental breakthrough during the spring. I still think someone should give Hagreup a chance. It's not like we have much to lose.
...every decommit is Hoke/Brandon's fault. Hart was unlikely to ever come here after Alabama did what they did for his High School. Goudis had already switched once from a school (Boise State) and thus had a decent chance at doing it again. The only true decommit that you might lay on Brandon/Hoke's head is Dallas Crawford and if we get Taylor (its us and Pittsburgh, so I admit its not a lock, though he is scheduled for a visit which is encouraging) we should be okay on that front.
Wish him luck. Honestly, that was one of the worst kicking perfomances statistically and in reality of all time last year. Even a bit of a regression to the mean would be a massive improvement, so while I'd like a kicker in this class, I definitely think there are other areas where the coaching staff should focus on.
I'm going to open tryouts and trying out for kicker next year. This is not a joke.
May not make a difference with Goudis but players can be switched until they sign LOIs. Doesn't look great now for the recruiting class but there is still some time left.
Rivals has him being offered by Penn, Brown, Harvard, Cornell, among the schools previously mentioned. If he's as smart as his GPA and testscores indicate he should jump on that Harvard offer.
