In case anybody's looking to waste some time, there's a pretty entertaining documentary on Massillon High's football team called "Go Tigers!" that's available for instant streaming on Netflix.
Mike Lantry, 1972
Just an excellent film, thanks for the tip.
Yes, great movie.
I remember in the State Playoffs it was Warren Harding (My Pride) vs Massillon ... and i kept hearing about this #2 player for Massillon and he was going to Michigan(My Soul)... Harding came out and i was pumped ... then the Harding side got REAL quiet.
Massillon stood in front of the tunnel (was about 15 degrees) and a GIANT stood making everyone on the field look tiny ..he was #2 .. he was Shawn Crable
And i must add ... Crable was a beast .. but after a AMAZING game won 21-20 in OT by Warren Harding ..it was Hardings #4 that everyone was talking about ..He was Prescott Burgess
As an aside, if you're looking for sports documentaries on Netflix, I recommend checking out the doc "Bigger, Stronger, Faster." It's a cool look at steroids in sports, society, and in the filmmaker's own family. I saw it the other day and really enjoyed it.
It's an excellent film that is very deserving of the praise it received.
As a side note, the filmmaker's brother Mike "Mad Dog" Bell, who was the wrestler, died after the movie was made.
They say it was probably depression and drugs.
Certainly makes for an interesting post script to the film.
Crable was a freshman and not on the varsity team this year? This is the same year that Massillon got in trouble for recruiting Jessie Scott from neighboring Perry Township. Kind of interesting that 10 years later there is an ongoing investigation regarding recruiting in western Stark County, aka Massillon. I do remember when our team played Crable in high school, he was the easiest player on the field to pick out because in the huddle he had a helmet on everybody else.
Really a great view of the pathology that goes into growing up into a Buckeye.
