Mason Ferlic wins NCAA East regional steeplechase

Submitted by Unsalted on

Congratulations to Mason Ferlic, Michigan Track, on winning the NCAA east regional. Mason is the favorite to win at the NCAA nationals in Eugene in two weeks. After nationals he is off to the Olympic trials.

There is an interview with Mason at Flotrack.org.

He's right up there with his coach as the top distance runners in Michigan history.

That fall he had last year likely cost him it. Redemption.

Have you ever heard of Greg Meyer?   I hardly think that any list of the top distance runners in Michigan History could omit Meyer, a Michigan Athletics Hall of Famer and the last native-born American to win the Boston Marathon.

Look Meyer up; if you do, you just might find that Meyer was one helluva Steeplechase and Cross Country runner, too.

My guess is that insufficient research was (again) part of the equation that caused you to post such a half-baked statement.  Maybe by the time April 2018 rolls around, you'll give Meyer his due.  For the sake of your online Superguide, I hope so.

"He's right up there with his coach as the top distance runners in Michigan history."

Read it again.  WD clearly states that Ferlic and his coach (Kevin Sullivan, I would assume) are the top distance runners in Michigan History.  If he would have posted something along the lines of this: "He's right up there with his coach among the top distance runners in Michigan history.",  I wouldn't have had reason to comment other than to agree.

Writing clearly.  It's important.

 As is reading comprehension.

Don't you know that WD is the end all be all on every Michigan sport!!!! He posts his lineups for baseball, water polo, lacrosse, soccer, and all the other sports. The SuperGuide is actually more accurate than actual Michigan history bc ya know it's creased by WD!!!1!!1!1!!

Actual Michigan history books are missing a ton of important info. Baseball book on MGoBlue is a joke because no one put any hard work into finding info on where any of the games were played.

It's called Bentley Library. I've been there a lot and that's what these are built on. Get a clue.

You're flipping a shit over a word I missed in my late night post. I know damn well who Greg Meyer is. He has an All-American page and as great as that accomplishment he had outside Michigan is, he never won the B1G Individual Championship.

Kevin Sullivan won it thrice.

Here's his page.

won the B10 individual and was an all-american in cross country and track in 1985.  great guy, great runner.  watched him win an indoor mile race once in ann arbor on that 1/8th mile (at the time, probably long gone now) track.  the leaders got way out ahead, like 2/3rds of a lap, and then he reeled them in and won going away.  a very memorable race and win.

past holder of 2 world records and 10 American road-racing records, winner of other major marathons such as the Detroit Marathon and Chicago Marathon, besides being a track All-American and 3-time Cross Country All-American while getting his degree from U of M---I think Meyer (and Brian Diemer, too)  have earned a place on the "Mount Rushmore" of  greatest Michigan Wolverine distance runners, right alongside Kevin Sullivan.

for joining the ever-growing ranks of Michigan champions.  Greg Meyer would be proud!

(If it weren't for Ferlic's success and the astute contributors to this board, some of us wouldn't have known about Meyer and Sullivan and Diemer.  Now we do, and are quadrupely proud.)

On the occasions when I can't sleep and have the notion to check on MGoBlog After Hours, I admit to a similar expression, although I look that way - if it is during the season - at the threads that are going to get nuked in the morning. To be fair to the blog though, some of the most fascinating (I am being generous here - maybe) theories on sports ever fronted by anyone have appeared here between about 1 AM and 5 AM or so.

rob f has turned into one of them. That's okay. Take a number and stand in line.

The shortsighted ones that knocks my work that's still in progress will be disappointed in a couple year's time.

I've "turned into one of them".  One of what?

"Take a number and stand in line."  ??

Lighten up, Michael Francis Devotee.   Either that or roll up a 'number' and light up, if that'll help mellow you out a bit from feeling so picked on/persecuted.  Darker Blue or Mad Hatter might be able to help you out there, if you wish.

FWIW, I upvote you a helluva lot more than I downvote you, I give you credit when it's due and generally approve of the vast majority of your non-apparel posts.   I treat you and your posts the same as I do those of the overwhelming majority on MGoBoard.   [I'll admit it, there are a very small handful of favorite posters who get practically an auto-upvote because their overall posting quality and/or attitude and/or internet personas consistantly enlighten me and/or bring a smile to my face (here's looking at you, 'Space Coyote',  'Quiverfull', 'Mabel Pines', 'Everyone Murders', 'Muttley', 'MGoBrewMom', 'ShruteBeetFarms', and 'stephenrjking', to name some of them).  You haven't earned the same free pass/free points treatment from me.]

TBH,  the 'stop picking on me' act seen more and more often over the last several months is a bad look.  As are posts like the one I ripped on you on a bit in the early AM hours today.  Your post about Ferlic was no doubt meant well but was so factually incorrect that I immediately addressed it---as I would with anyone else that presents themselves as an "expert' and then proceeds to put up half-baked posts.

Maybe you don't like the critisism you get, but whether you realize it or not (or even care), you've somewhat set yourself up for it by presenting yourself as the expert on all things Michigan.  When you do that, you place the burden on yourself to get it right or get called out.

FWIW, part 2: get rid of your "WD" avater and go back to that of Michigan QB Harry Newman.   That emblem of yours is an absolute lightning rod and has been from day one, IMO.  Ever heard of the phrase  "He who exalts himself shall be humbled"?  I'm guessing you have.

When I posted I forgot about Mason's plunge in 2015 in Eugene. Steeplechase can be very cruel.

Go Mason! Go Blue!

Mason went horizontal on lap two in 2015.

Don't worry, if it was anyone else that omitted a word past midnight after working all day, there wouldn't have been any problem.

Unbelievable. A congratulatory post and people still find a way to bitch at me and deral a thread.
