Mason Cole to Center?

Submitted by 1464 on
Saw a couple of Twitter tweets that seem to suggest that Cole is heading to center next year, and that LTT will be the new LT. Am I missing a joke? Is this a real thing?

I wouldnt hate it...

He is actually a little undersized for LT compared to guys like LTT. He would probably be a better fit a Center. And considering he was a successful starting LT as a true freshman, he is probably a smart kid, which would be nice to have at Center.

That being said, none of this bodes well for Kugler

This might be something that the coaches want to try out to get the five best players on the field.

This is what I think. Probably not all of these moves will stick. They're just trying what they can and this is a better time then fall to do it. I think JH wants to get the most competitive people on the field.

Michigan needs a viable center other than Kugler in case he goes down.  You can't count on Glasgow, harsh as that may sound, and Bars apparently isn't ready.  It's also possible that Michigan will be better with Cole at center and LTT at LT than they are with Kugler at center and Cole at LT.

This really seems the most likely - if Glasgow is out, Cole, who's apparently starter quality at tackle, may very well be the 2nd best option at center. You need at least 2 guys practicing that position that you trust on the field.

Looks like the coaches are shuffling players around or just trolling the media for the 20 or so minutes they were allowed to be at practice.

Yeah. Trolling the media is a jab comment at a presser. Practice time is important; there's no way any competent (or even incompetent) coach wastes a fraction of the time and effort needed to rep a player at an unusual position just for the benefit of someone not on the team.

Seems like Harbaugh is doing a lot of experimentation all over the team. I wouldn't get too tied up in any "position switch" or "he's running with the ones" as it probably won't be much of a predictor of anything until at least fall.

I don't think this is a big deal. Most likely it's just the coaches trying different combo's at different positions to see how everyone does.

Even if this is legit, honestly if anything this is good news. Cole is the returning starter at LT, and he played very solidly as a true freshman. If he's replaced, that means that coaches think they guy behind him is better, which is a good sign. I'm not worried.

Kids gott learn multiple positions in case of injury.  You got to know how the 6th lineman fits in depending on which of the first 5 goes down.  The same the the 7th lineman, and the 8th lineman, etc

If the idea is to get the best 5 on the field than it is certainly possible. We have a lot of talent and depth on the o-line even with the recent attrition and suspension. Just need to find the best group, with the coaching we have it should lead to good results.
