Mascot(!) Panic Thread

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

This picture is from the cheer team's recent competition in Florida....

If you want to see the thing, click the link, and select Intermediate Coed from the competition selector above the video and then scroll through the list and look for Michigan. Or just type Michigan into the search bar and select "all competitions" and find the one that has this set up.

Viewer discretion is as advised.

Commense PANIC!!!!!

Meanwhile somewhere, you will see this:

If you watch the video, it seems that it is the resurrection of Willy the Wolverine.

the cheerleaders got second place at that competition.  Way to represent Michigan.

I found out about the mascot about a week ago but was trying to figure out the best way to tell the MGoBlog community.  We can over react to situations like this.

only appearance at the Big House.  The jet pack guy swoops in, grabs the mascot, and deposits it from a great height over East Lansing (the only place in Michigan where Mascots belong).

Because those insane people think it would be like harassing the animal and other ridiculous things like that. See at LSU, they don't give a shit. About anyone's opinion. Their coach eats grass for God sake.

Is that the video unveils some delectable midriff baring outfits, and all anyone can talk about is the dude sweating his balls off in the Florida heat wearing a furry costume.

I hope DB makes it happen. I love how he realizes that times change and we dont have to act like were living in 1969 every year.

This isn't just a slippery marketing slope anymore, it's a metal dorm food tray at the top of the Arb on a snowy January night. We're going to take that ride, consequences be damned. Turn up the Pop Evil.

If it looks like a tough, mean thing I'll be for it. I don't wany any smiling, goofy looking thing. I also don't want one that looks like it's constipated (sparty).

If they must, GIVE ME MEAN DAMNIT.

I was at the Victors Classic as an alumni cheerleader.  The current cheer members there for the spring game said the mascot is limited to the competition only (thankfully) FWIW.  In NCA competition, teams are awarded points for having a mascot, thus they had to have one.  No doubt it could be a slippery slope but I (want to?) believe it is not slated for general use at this time.

Michigan switched from UCA to NCA (different competitions, same company) because UCA is in early January and we are usually in a bowl game (first world problems!).  They are considering switching back due to conflicts with final exams (NCA is in April).

In my haste to help cease panic I only skimmed the board posts and apologize if this has been covered.  ps FWIW the current cheer members also strongly disliked the mascot.

Yep I'm a lurker, but addicted.  Pretty sure I bored my fellow alumni team members with trivial knowledge of the recruits and embarrassed myself welcoming them to Michigan as they walked by on the sidelines.  Thanks a lot, MGoBlog.  And I don't think my crush on Shane Morris is age-appropriate.  Then again, most of you guys have one too, so I guess it's ok.

I mean, I'd rather look at that than a mascot, for obvious reasons, but I've always liked how our cheerleaders have looked like, well, cheerleaders, and not like there should be poles on the field, like some southern teams. And when they pull out those yellow tops for big games, that's plenty sexy while still staying classy. As long as they don't bring out those tennis mom white polo shirts again....

I understand this is a panic thread....but for those who wish to be comforted, no need to worry just yet. Using a mascot in the cheer portion of the cheerleaders' competition gives them bonus points.

See http://nca.varsity.com/college_nationals.aspx
Click on the "score sheets" link
Then look at page 3 of the score sheets

You'll notice it says "BONUS" and gives the team points for 'Effective Mascot Incorporation'

Therefore I don't believe it's a Dave Brandon master plan to introduce a mascot but instead a way for the cheerleaders to do better in their competition. And I also believe the cheerleaders have been using a mascot in their competitions for multiple years and we have yet to see it during a game of any sort. Soooo no need to push the giant red panic button just yet

You sir, are truly a visionary.  You joined this blog over a year and a half ago, waited silently in the shadows, knowing full well that in a moment of crisis, you would be there to avert disaster.  I must say, I will sleep better at night knowing that we have a guardian watching over us, ready to launch his desperately needed wisdom at the appropriate time.  Until the next crisis is upon us, I bid you farewell.
