Maryland prez leaks Conference divisions
Not a fan of this at all.
Maryland prez tells regents MD, RU in Leaders Division w/OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Purdue & Indiana. Illinois moves to Legends
Legends
- Michigan
- Nebraska
- Michigan State
- Iowa
- Minnesota
- Northwestern
- Illinois
Leaders
- Ohio State
- Penn State
- Wisconsin
- Purdue
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Rutgers
It probably guarantees the protected crossover game (can't wait to see who they matchup with Maryland & Rutgers) which means Michigan would play the other teams once every 6 years.
Huge competitive and recruiting disadvantage for Legends Division as well as the Ohio, Pennsylvania, DC/Baltimore, and Jersey markets are all in the other division.

Yeah, well, until we add GT and UNC, and then we'll get an overhaul for sure (maybe?).
November 19th, 2012 at 1:49 PM ^
Fuck.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:17 PM ^
What he said.
November 19th, 2012 at 7:47 PM ^
Ditto
November 19th, 2012 at 1:50 PM ^
Cool. Now all the people that thought "maybe this is a way to get rid of Legends and Leaders" will hate this expansion too.
Illinois is probably leaping with joy at the thought of moving into a division with their besties in Ann Arbor, though.

Keeps the Brown Jug, Keeps the MSU game. I assume we won't go on a rotating basis with Ohio and I can bribe the wife with trips to NYC for the Rutgers game every couple of years. F it. I'm good.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
The Rutgers game in NYC will be more like once a decade.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
You mean every TWELVE years, right?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:10 PM ^
I can bribe the wife with trips to NYC for the Rutgers game once every 12 years.
FIFY
November 19th, 2012 at 4:23 PM ^
And by New York, you mean New Jersey.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:06 PM ^
Wish it was the Cavs coming aboard instead of Rutgers.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:50 PM ^
Dammit. I thought they might use this to fix their stupidity.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:50 PM ^
November 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
Assume PSU takes years to recover (which is a good assumption). That division has 2 good football teams, 4 terrible ones, and Penn State.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:55 PM ^
If Ohio State doesn't win that division every year, they'll be underachieving badly. That could be the worst division in the country
November 19th, 2012 at 5:38 PM ^
Its no where near as bad as the ACC coastal.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
November 19th, 2012 at 2:25 PM ^
you are massively overrating the current quality of the Rutgers football program.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:48 PM ^
Rutgers plays in the Big East with powerhouses like Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, et al. When they make the move to the B1G, they will likely find the going slightly more difficult (see West Virginia this year in the Big 12).
November 19th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
It's funny, because I thought we had the more challenging one... maybe I was thinking immediate next few years. I guess that tells me it's balanced enough.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:51 PM ^
At least none of these fake Big Ten schools gets put into our division, I guess.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:51 PM ^
The big question is:
How does this change the hard fought and contentious rivalry between MSU and Indiana? We cannot afford to lose that.
November 19th, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
Heard it switches to MSU/Maryland.
Illinois picks up a “border-war” with Indiana as a crossover and Northwestern gets Rutgers. (ChiTown is none too happy.)
November 19th, 2012 at 1:51 PM ^
So... 8 conference games - 6 division games - 1 protected game (ohio state) = 1 remaining game. We'll play
- Penn State
- Wisconsin
- Purdue
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Rutgers
Once every six years each?
November 19th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
Unless they move to 9 conference games (which may happen) or if they get into the B1G championship game.
Summary is that it doesn't really change too much for us....
November 19th, 2012 at 1:59 PM ^
The earliest that would happen is 2017 like it was before. They might even have to wait until a couple years after that depending on how schedules have filled out in the last few months. That leaves at least 3 seasons where you have only 8 conference games with one cross-division rotational game.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
9 conference games was thought to be dead with the PAC-12 agreement... that was before this of course. That would make for only 2 "free" spots on the schedule. hm.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
The only good that can come out of this now is that the Big Ten might go to a 9-game schedule (6 games in-division, 1 protected game, 2 more cross-division games), so Michigan will get to play each of those schools twice every 6 years.
I guess I'm really looking forward to that one time between 2014 and 2019 that we host Wisconsin. Plus the one time between 2020 and 2025.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:55 PM ^
makes me want to lay a big ol' turd in my undies. Wisconsin now becomes just a rumor to us - I guess it kinda is already.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:06 PM ^
That's exactly how the SEC is doing it right now.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:13 PM ^
Not playing penn st and wisconsin conistently is a little annoying but its not the end of the world, maybe this breaks up the nebraska being home the same year as ohio st thing and at the end of the day are schedule doesn't really change all that much.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM ^
So we get Illinois as a baby seal every year and OSU's only hurdles to a B1G championship game are Wisconsin and Penn State (after their ban ends)?
November 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM ^
I have to believe M would prefer to be on the other division, which is more East Coast-ish, because M's fan-base skews eastward.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:03 PM ^
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
November 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM ^
OH MUTHERF@#%ER
November 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM ^
The announcement of these schools joining already has me upset and then this realignment, if true, is horrible. If this gets brought up around the table on Thursday after a few drinks the dicussion will become R-rated very quickly. This is horrible and will ultimately ruin my holiday.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:25 PM ^
A+ avatar. Absolutely phenominal.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM ^
So Ohio gets to feast on two extra cupcakes a year? And we get one?
This is not fair.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:55 PM ^
OSU gets 2 (MD and Rutgers) minus 1 (Illinois)... so it should even out...
Dunno, I'm not a math major.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:06 PM ^
Wrong - they had (1) cupcake - Illinois
Now they have (2) - Rutgers and Maryland
We had (0) now we have (1).
So it is NOT even.
OUR PLATE:
OHIO:
NOT FAIR!
November 19th, 2012 at 2:10 PM ^
This reminds me of that puzzle where three guys pay the waiter too much, and his boss tells him to give some money back, but he keeps some for himself, and then at the end there's a missing dollar for some reason.
Essentially I'm saying your attempts at math are nonsense.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:14 PM ^
Now I am going to stress-eat one of the last remaining Hostess Cupcakes on Earth with my green-tea. juxtapose
November 19th, 2012 at 2:10 PM ^
November 19th, 2012 at 2:20 PM ^
Sure, MSU is fighting for eligibility, but the guys in the striped shirts have secured their spot. Pretty sure they would end up in our division, at least according to Leveon Bell.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:14 PM ^
thats one cool looking bulldozer cupcake. I'd rather have one cool bulldozer than two turd looking things. After all, they say you eat with your eyes first (which I believe is incorrect, but this is not the place for epicurean discussions)
November 19th, 2012 at 2:13 PM ^
Having the easier division might help you get to the championship game, but if your goal is to make the new 4 team playoffs, it's going to hurt.
A one loss B1G champ OSU team could easily get shut out of the playoffs if, for example, Virginia Tech (future out of conference opponent) ended up being bad and OSU lost to one of Michigan or Wisconsin.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:18 PM ^
Well I like our cupcake a lot more. I mean look at those chocolate ones. They look like two swirly turds. Or maybe that's the point.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:22 PM ^
Assuming PSU comes back to relevance the divisions should be pretty even.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:24 PM ^
since we're using whole numbers for games, someone HAS to get screwed. OSU fans would be just as pissed if we got the two cupcakes.
For the record though, I have to ask: are you one of those guys who LIKES playing cupcakes? For instance, would you be happy with us exchanging MSU for EMU? That would make it easier for us to get to that B1G championship game. Or, do you not wanna play cupcake games unless you don't in which case you'll start complaining about not having cupcakes?
I swear, Brian, put this blog on TWIS. People complain about "oh, too many cupcakes" and then, "oh, not enough cupcakes" . "I want RR for his new offense" then "oh, STICK TO TRADITION", "those Fab 5 jerseys were so innovative" to "NEW JERSEYS SUCK", etc.
If you always want to see the glass half full, fine. Just realize that you're needlesly making your life harder. You can't do anything about it, and complaining about every change isn't going to make it better.
