"Do you teach the players position skills?"

-- "No, the position coaches do that."

"Do you call the plays?"

-- "Um, no, the coordinators do that."

"OK, so... do you physically signal the plays into the QB?"

--  "Well... uh... no, the backup QBs signal in the plays."

"So, Randy, just what would you say it is that you do here?"

-- "I INTERACT WITH THE GODDAMNED FANS AND MEDIA SO THE PLAYERS DON'T HAVE TO. I HAVE PEOPLE SKILLS. I AM GOOD AT DEALING WITH PEOPLE. CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT? WHAT THE HELL IS MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE??"

I'm so glad we added this program to the Big Ten:  "Maryland's fan base, unlike some of its Big Ten counterparts and those in football-religious fanbases of the Southeastern Conference, doesn't include a massive base of big-money football boosters, especially during times when the product is poor. Still in the process of raising funds for its $155-million football facility, low booster morale was making it difficult for the school's fundraisers to elicit donations. With this year's team looking like it will struggle through the remainder of the season, negativity mounting and players grumbling..."

That place was empty on Saturday.  Some MD students that left at halftime, a few glum-looking diehards, and the rest Michigan fans.

At first I thought it was cool that it was all Michigan fans.  But then it got a little depressing.

Their band's post-game show was played to absolutely nobody.  I felt bad for those kids.

Maryland has no equivalent of Michgian's Northwestern-game-fan-endurance-award where 80,000 people still came out in wretched weather for a lost cause.  They are bandwagon fans only.

Remember the Rich Rod to Maryland rumors right before the inevitible firing?  He'd get his shot at us once a year.  If he doesn't want to bring Casteel maybe he can hire Tony GIbson!

Brian and Ace mentioned one the podcast a few weeks ago that Cubit was named in the same report that got Beckman fired, and would seem unlikely to get the permanent gig. You'd have to figure Hazell at Purdue would be out, and despite some booster support, Kyle Flood at Rutgers. That's four jobs in the conference. I can't imagine another Power 5 league having that many open gigs, especially this year.

So Beckman and Edsall are out.  I assume Flood at Rutgers won't last the year.  As nice as it was to see Purdue almost complete the comeback at East Lansing, I have to think this is it for Hazell as well.

Pelini for all his wackiness, I still think of as an above average college coach. He could go to a place like Louisville or UConn and make them into a 10 win/yr team. Maryland would probably be a dream job for him as he could go 8-5 / 9-4 consistently, turn into a modern day Glenn Mason, and the Maryland media/fan base wouldn't be on his ass every day like the Nebraska folks.

1) The team has turned their back on Edsell....players only meeting he knew nothing about.

2) Recruiting moving forward....

I would guess they are bleeding recruits or attempting to keep as many as possible. This will be interesting to see because many players commit to a specific coach more so than a program, some commit to a program more so than a coach (within reason, the relationship with the coach does matter). Because I don't view Maryland as one of those "prestigous" programs, I would guess that most of the recruits committed due to Edsell! Wonder if they have any commits worth looking at?

If this is true this just shows how much of a mess the Maryland athletic department is that they can't keep their decision under wraps until the bye week and/or just fire him now and get it over with.

Two of the most laughable posts I saw last week on UMD's 247 board were about the Harbaughs. One suggested that they could've tried to outbid UM for Jim Harbaugh, the other suggested that John Harbaugh will be their coach next year (actually there have been several suggesting the latter).

It feels nice to be the less dilusional of two fanbases for once when the other fanbase isn't ND.
