Marv Marinovich, Tate & Barwis

Submitted by Ziff72 on

I read an intersting article in ESPN the Magazine on how Marv Marinovich is working with MMA fighters. It was very interesting on 2 fronts.

The 1st was how similar his workouts mirrored Barwis, from what I have been able to gather, with a big emphasis on explosiveness and flexibility with a lot of sprinting. Both also sound obssessed with making kids bodies as good as they can be. I wonder if anyone knows if they have any relationship?? I wonder if that was one of the reasons Tate liked Michigan as he worked with Marv during high school and the programs looked similar or Marv gave a seal of approval. I'm always been amazed at Tate's supposed lack of strength when he got here, now after reading that article I'm even more so.

Secondly, for those of us old enough to remember his son RoboQB, I was amazed to know that he is clean now and works for his dad and they are as close as ever. He doesn't blame his dad for anything that happened to him. From everything I read the media had painted Marv as a monster, but reading this gave me a new perspective on the guy. He admits he may have pushed his son too hard, but he was not portrayed as the lunatic you may have imagined from the stories back in the day.

This was a great article and I was going to mention something on it as well.

Not to mention that Marv and his younger brother are absolutely YOKED and could kick just about anyone's ass on this board.

I think the article gets across the point of "Marv is a genius when it comes to working the human body, but failed as a father. However, now he's trying to build his training business so he can leave something to Todd and be a better father that way".

If you have that same mag, flip to the page before to read the Bucher article on Russell Westbrook. Basically tells a story of a kid who worked his ass off and went from "out of the lottery" to #4 overall pick a few weeks before the draft. Manny - get your ass in gear man....

I know that Marv works with BJ Penn among others and gets a lot of credit for changing him from the cheeseburger eating doughboy with potential to the whole-food eating semi-doughboy that rules the lower weight classes.

"Camp Marinovich" when he could outside of regular school and team activities. Of course, he was being at least partially home-schooled, and could work a schedule around football and conditioning even more than most Southern California kids.

But is Marinovich in LA? And wasn't Tate in San Diego?

I think Marinovich is in Orange County. Not a big difference from a distance standpoint, but a pretty big difference from a traffic standpoint. Also, Scripps Ranch is north of San Diego (still city of, but north of what most poeple think of as San Diego) so to go from Scripps Ranch to OC isn't a big deal at all.

I remember reading that Tate used to take the train to L.A. a couple days a week. Oh, and although lazy, B.J. Penn didn't just have potential before working with the Marinavich's, he was the champ and one of the top fighters pound for pound.
