Martin quote about holding
"There was one play where the ref gave 59 (left guard Chris Stewart) a warning. He held the heck out of me and I looked at the ref and he just went over to 59 and was like, 'Hey, watch it.' And I'm like, 'This isn't like a speeding ticket, where you get a warning!' But that's something you just can't control."
So my question is... um, shouldn't that ref just be fired?

I did catch Roh and Martin getting held on a couple of occasions, but I also saw our offensive linemen get away with a couple of holds so I thought it just evened out.

Mouton was certainly held on the play in question.  His jersey was grasped and tugged away from his body, and then he turned towards the play and it the gusy hands were still outside his pads and grabbing.  Holding happens on every play, but when it's so blatant and at the point of attack it has to be called.

That Mouton hold happened on the series right after the drive killing Omameh hold.  I was already pissed about the Omameh hold because it happened after Denard had clearly passed the block, and didn't affect the play.  So on the very next series to watch Mouton unable to reach back to tackle Allen on a sweep play because the Left Tackle had him tied up just boiled my blood.  Holding happens all the time, but only Michigan seemed to be getting dinged on it so much.  Martin's quote justifies my feelings about the refs.

is one of those things where I feel like usually you can't complain about it all that much because it's probably missed being called against your own team as often as it is in favor.

But considering all the holding calls we were getting nailed with, there were some egregious ones that went uncalled (one horribly obvious one on Mouton where the RB came around the edge with Mouton on contain and the ND "blocker" practically ripping his shoulder pad off as Jonas was trying to run away from him).

Although I really think that one on Michael Floyd was pretty soft, so maybe they were owed one.

Overall, it wasn't a poorly officiated game by any means.

when I say "missed."  Whether they're actually missing them or just choosing not to call them, I still believe it happens both ways.   So without closely examining the tape, it's possible we were doing the exact same things and the refs would say to us "be careful."

Holding basically is a judgment call at this point in football.  I really don't think it's an exaggeration to say that by the rulebook, holding happens on every play.  So the ref is left to decide "was that hold so egregious that I should call it?" (except for the Spartan Bob game, in which case anal penetration was permissable MSU OL behavior).  Maybe there was more leeway given to ND in this particular game, but a ref giving an OL a heads up is not out of the ordinary.

I doubt that either a Michigan or an ND player picked up the football in the endzone, probably just the ref.  It's not like it rolled out the back of the endzone, so no possession changed.  I would imagine they'd place it at the spot of the fumble and call it first and goal at the half yard line.

ND got away with a boatload of holds last year, too.  Seems to be characterisitic of their O-line for some reason.

Now with 100% less South Bend, 100% more Washington DC.

Some of the holds on their first couple of drives were absurd, I thought we were dealt some pretty poor cards from the refs in this one.

I don't even want to mention their fantom touchdown.

THere were so many blown calls today.  ND was holding on almost every play, i'm glad Martin stepped up and said something.  I'm surprised we didn't see a pass interference on the last play of the game even though the ball was in the stands.

It always chaps my ass when Michigan gets called for holding when playing ND.  ND's o-line holds on practically every play, and often in a ridiculously blatant fashion (see, e.g,. any time they run around the end).

Interestingly, today also marks the second time in recent memory that ND was credited with a TD despite the ballcarrier being separated from the ball at the 2 yard line.
