Marquette coach Joe Amplo turns down Michigan lacrosse job

Submitted by Maizen on

There are rumors on twitter Michigan is being stingy with money and it's limiting their candidate pool.

Joe Amplo will remain the head coach at Marquette, the university confirmed via a release issued Saturday. The announcement comes amid speculation that Amplo was in line to replace John Paul at Michigan. Multiple sources have told Inside Lacrosse that Amplo was offered the position, but that the parties could not come to terms on a deal.

The announcement comes almost exactly a year after a nearly identical announcement ended speculation that Amplo was to become the next head coach at Princeton.

After IL first reported that Ben DeLuca would become Delaware's next coach, Michigan remains one of two open head coaching positions; St. Bonaventure is the other.

Dan Sheehan from Division II LeMoyne College (one of John Beilein's coaching stops) . . .

"Dan Sheehan, the only coach at Le Moyne College to lead his team to a national championship, is in his 20th season as the men’s lacrosse head coach. One of the nation’s most successful lacrosse coaches, he has posted a 283-49 (.852) overall mark through the 2017 season, including five National Championship game victories. Since the turn of the century, Sheehan’s Dolphins are 271-32 (.894). His 283 career victories are the 23rd-most in the history of NCAA lacrosse."

Michigan would surely be an upgrade in terms of salary.  LeMoyne is located in Syracuse, New York and the Central New York area has a good talent pool.

20th season as head coach? How old is he? In all that time and success why didn't he get hired by a Div I school? If the explanation is that he was just comfortable where he's at...well then chances are he won't come to Michigan at this point.

Talked about this topic this past week. They hinted that they thought amplo would take the job, they didn't actually name him. They followed that up with if the current candidate (amplo) turned them down that they would then have two more candidates that have a larger profile in the lacrosse community.

Supposedly the next two candidates are a tier above according to inside lacrosse. They said although that seems counterintuitive, that's the way these things work sometimes. Michigan is building the nicest lacrosse facility in the country so I don't know why you'd skimp on a coach but let's see how it plays out. Michigan can do better than Amplo anyways. They think Michigan is a top 10 job in the country and should be competing for a spot in the B1G tournament as early as next year.

Wow great catch Maizen.  I was wondering why I hadn't heard any chatter/rumors lately.

I'm really curious who the others are now.  If they're more established but they asked Amplo first I wonder if they're older and they wanted Amplo as a multi-decade hire

What is the difference between an average coach and the highest paid ones?  I can't imagine it is much when you have the athletic budget Michigan has.  If this program gets turned around they will sell some tickets and merch to make up the difference.

Not saying he wasn't offered but you never know if the coach isn't just putting it out there to get a raise. Hoping they don't end up with Starsia or Cottle. I can't think of two bigger names than amplo without taking an ACC, Big10 or Denver coach. And if the rumors are true I don't think we can afford any of those. Would have liked byrne, amplo, nadelin or Shea

If we paid top dollar for every coach the athletic department would be in a lot worse position than they are now. There is also some belief that for non-revenue sports we pay the same for both men's and women's coaches. The data suggests that is basically true, and if we won't stray from that, paying a top men's coach would require paying nearly as much for a women's coach. That might be more than Warde is willing to give. That said we need to offer enough to get a top coach and convince them to relocate and take over a last in the conference team with high expectations from the athletic department. Keeping in mind the next worse team in the conference was #1 in the country earlier in the year and we are way behind that is a tall order.

Belief from whom. It's completely asinine to think women's coaches are going to get paid as much as men. And we aren't that far behind. inside lacrosse guys said Michigan could easily make the B1G tournament next year.

Read the laxpower thread. Someone looked up the actual salaries and you can see they are very similar for non revenue sports and in a number of cases the women's coach makes more (soccer for example). We have a lot of parts to get in place/develop before we can expect to beat 2 big10 teams (fogo, dodging attackman, lockdown defender, etc.). Rutgers was #1 in the country this year and couldn't get it done. It will not be an easy task. I would say we may not be far from competing, but winning will be tough.

Why is that asinine?

Aside from a the revenue sports, why is it asinine that a women's coach make the same as a men's coach? They both do the same thing for the University. Neither sport generates revenue for the University. Seems entirely reasonable that both a men's and women's coach for the same sport make the same amount of money.

Exactly.  It's not the gender of the coach, it's the sport that he/she coaches.  Lacrosse, Field Hockey, etc. are more alike than different to the school, regardless of whether it's Men or Women.  In terms of revenue, the pay disparity runs in high correlation with that, tenure and success.

Top paid coaches at MICHIGAN are exactly who you'd expect them to be.

Perhaps at Princeton, the men's Football coach is on par with Lacrosse and paid accordingly, but not at UM.

to get their program established.

not sure we have a fan base clamoring for immediate success but please no more games in the Big House in front of 50 fans which has to have been part of the goal.

it's nice to have a goal to be good in everything but where does it end?

how much do you spend to make a second tier sport like lacrosse good?

the money being spent on facilities that are a drain on all others is really out of hand already.

luckily we have men like Steven Ross who has invested so many millions to the AD to spend how they want.

best thing the new stadium will do is get these guys and gals out of Oosterbann so they can get the new weight room and traning done for Football, we NEED that to compete at a higher level and to get top recruits.

when the FB players spend most of their time in the off season in the weight room it should be on par at least with your competition.

Whether this is true or not, we'd better not get some half-ass, 2nd tier choice in this thing because we were being cheap. We let go of a coach, have been recruiting decently well, and are close to opening the best lax facilities in the country. Don't screw up this opportunity and set the program back another 5-10 years because you're being a cheapskate please

True, if you were going to do that you might as well have held on to JP and spend a little bit of money on top-flight assistants. I thought the point of getting rid of JP was to Go Big.

I think the facilities aren't as big of a draw for coaches and recruits as we thought. Also - the program is on the hook for $2m for the construction of the facility (although it may have been earmarked as a gift from a big time donor).  Still thats a lot of scratch tied up in a facility that isn't entirely necessary. Would be nice to have more cash to spend on a coach in that case.

Nadelen's staying at Towson per Baltimore Sun. I'm guessing next up is Scott Marr. Beyond that, Gerry Byrne? Judd Lattimore, the former Michigan OC now at Holy Cross? Andy Shay or Ryan Polley? It's back to being a total crapshoot.

The dark horse is Conor Ford.  I could see Andy Shay getting the job but perhaps everyone is still a little nervous coming into Michigan and not knowing how supportive the program is. I would like to know what the "terms" were that could not be agreed. Salary or other tangibles.

But Conor Ford could have come to Ann Arbor knowing he might get a shot at the job. He is still listed on the staff directory.
