Mark Moundros to LB - that sounds interesting

Submitted by TESOE on
Moundros got the short end of the PT stick last year. I was looking forward to seeing more of him with Grady graduating, but this bit of news from RR at the signing presser gives me hope for even more time. I'm wondering if we will see more talent come over to the D to protect some red shirts this Fall. EDIT: Note this same interview RR mentions Cam Gordon to Safety. The redshirting is going to be interesting - Spring practice and the Fall are going to be very competitive.

Isn't he a senior this year? Why would you move him to a new position? I thought he just got hurt part of last year and then Grady kind of took over at FB...

Did you forget the walk-on starting at middle linebacker thing? This is another way to get a body at a position that is low on numbers. Who knows, with the way that Obi played last year Moundros might even get some time at LB, if he ends up staying there past spring.

Gordon to S is interesting. First of all, I thought he was kind of a bigger possession type receiver and that they were considering a move the LB. Also, we brought in a lot of safeties this year, you wouldn't think it would be a huge position of need.

Although I agree with you somewhat, Cam Gordon will be a RS Freshman, who didn't play defense last year, so by moving him to D, it's just another freshman safety thrown into the mix. Unless we have some indication that Cam will be significantly better than the other freshman safeties, he's just another young, inexperienced player in an area where we have a lot of those.

The only true freshman who will see playing time for sure are Cullen Christian and Demar Dorsey. I think that Moundros is a great fullback, but he was barely used last year. Now that Roundtree has proven himself, and with having Koger, Odoms and Gallon, I think we are looking at a way to get a good player on the field. We will probably run a lot of four receiver sets and not have a fullback much. Moundros can always come in for a goaline situation even if he spends 90% of his time at linebacker this year. Remember, no matter what a guy is rated coming out of high school, his body won't be as mature as a guy who is 4-5 years older than him. Not to mention the struggle of dealing with college and the speed of the game.

I think Moundros did a good job at FB, although we mostly played Grady in that role last year. Just curious, as I would like to see him at FB this year, catching passes out of the backfield a la last year's spring game.
