Mark Donnal reclassifies to Junior
This doesn't mean much near term but it would appear the writing is on the wall longer term. Not a surprise considering the struggles and lack of physicality last year but what a far cry from the tales of spring 2013 when he was "tearing up Jordan Morgan" in practice.
You talkin' about practice?!!

The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Monclova, Ohio, native is now listed as junior, a change from when the roster was updated for the 2015-16 season in mid-July.
A U-M team spokesman confirmed that Donnal's status was modified "a few weeks ago," but did not provide a statement as to why. Regardless of Michigan's classification, Donnal has three seasons of NCAA eligibility remaining.

is it his choice to set up for a grad transfer like Max?

Which is kind of weird they'd reclassify now. Motivational tactic?

Thanks Hillary.

I think it's Beilein's way of saying you should make sure and get your degree in four years. I imagine there's a motivational component to it too.

I suspect this is part of a new athletic department policy that lists individuals by their academic standing rather than their eligibility class.
The same reason that Wilton Speight and Jabrill Peppers are listed as Sophomores--for whatever reason, they have dropped the "redshirt" designations from the rosters:
http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/mich-m-footbl-mtt.html
I have no idea why the change was made, but it has been changed in multiple sports. Including, obviously, men's basketball.
November 9th, 2015 at 10:27 AM ^
Robinson and Wilson are listed as RS SO and RS FR, respectively. I think it's a football only change in policy.
November 9th, 2015 at 10:35 AM ^
You're right--I didn't look at the basketball roster. Thanks for catching that.
The reason that they would change one person but not the other two is a bit mysterious to me. Well, as the article said, it's not like it changes his actual eligibility status.

when it comes to class. You're listed as you're year, and if you're good enough to deserve a 5th year, and you didn't play Freshman year you get it. Seems like a good policy across the board for all the sports.

In the 4th quarter of the Rutgers game, the announcers said that Shane Morris asked to redshirt at the start of the season. There have also been some rumors about him graduating early and playing two years at Grand Valley State.

Man that has got to be tough for a kid like Shane, to go from 5* stud to D2. But hopefully he is happy, gets to play the game he loves, and has a good future.

Doesn't need to graduate to play at GVSU
November 9th, 2015 at 10:33 AM ^
Maybe he'd prefer a UM degree to GVSU?
November 9th, 2015 at 10:35 AM ^
He wants to get his degree from Michigan and have two years of eligibility.
November 9th, 2015 at 11:07 AM ^
I would be shocked if that was possible. Graduating from UM in three years is a very tall task, especially if you haven't been preparing to do so from day one. Devin Gardner started taking a heavier course load and, I believe, all spring/summer semesters from the very start, but his case is extremely rare.
November 9th, 2015 at 11:16 AM ^
if (and big if) he came in with a lot of APs it is not too hard to get to 120. Remember, athletes tend to be here all year so they pick up spring and sometimes even a summer term credit
Furthermore, qbs all over are preparing to graduate in three years to allow a grad transfer plus two. It is just a good strategy.
My only hope for Shane is that he gets a degree and then makes a decision that makes him happy long term, whatever that may be

it should be doable for most players (depending on major of course). we were able to finish early at bc due to all the summer classes. im guessing many of these guys have the option to take classes both summer sessions. its certainly doable as long as theyre not messing around with meaningless courses

I don't think a transfer to GVSU is likely. He was there to watch his brother. If he graduates early, he could go anywhere and be eligible next season. If he doesn't graduate, then he would need to move down to schools like GVSU to do that.
November 9th, 2015 at 11:31 AM ^
is transfering wherever Brady Hoke is coaching next year. I'd have to believe that Hoke would love to have Morris.
November 9th, 2015 at 12:51 PM ^
I think there is no chance Morris goes to a school like Grand Valley State. If he transfer at all , it seems to me it will be a Division 1 school.. He asked to reshirt only if he was not going to see much playing time as the Michigan starter.
November 9th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
GVSU used to be great. How are they now?
November 9th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
to Mark to let him know now that they don't anticipate him getting a 5th year. That way he knows he needs to graduate in 4 years and if he wants to keep playing he can take a 5th year somewhere else.

This is just my opinion, but I believe he will play this year. Given it was just an exhibition game, but he showed a little different game than the other 5's did. I thought he looked pretty good doing it as well.
November 9th, 2015 at 1:27 PM ^
that could contribute this year that won't be in the rotation. Beilein has said he wants to go 8 or 9 deep, just like always.
I'm guessing if Wagner plays, it won't be right away. He'll have to show in practice that he can play a meaningful role, much like LeVert as a freshman. Based on Beilein's comments on his rebounding and what I've seen, he's more ready to play the 4 than the 5 right now. I think Wilson will get most of his minutes at the 5.
