Mark Donnal reclassifies to Junior

Submitted by alum96 on

This doesn't mean much near term but it would appear the writing is on the wall longer term.  Not a surprise considering the struggles and lack of physicality last year but what a far cry from the tales of spring 2013 when he was "tearing up Jordan Morgan" in practice.

You talkin' about practice?!!

The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Monclova, Ohio, native is now listed as junior, a change from when the roster was updated for the 2015-16 season in mid-July.

A U-M team spokesman confirmed that Donnal's status was modified "a few weeks ago," but did not provide a statement as to why.  Regardless of Michigan's classification, Donnal has three seasons of NCAA eligibility remaining.

Eh, whatever. It will work it self out; there's still time. Either he gets a lot of time and both he and the coaches want a 5th year at UM, or when that potential 5th year comes along, maybe he or the coaches think opportunities are better elsewhere. Still a long way off.

If Beilein thought he was going to want Max or Blake around for their 5th year, he wouldn't have reclassified them. This, to me, means the same thing for Donnal as it did for Max and Blake: they'd rather use the scholarship spot for recruiting purposes than for a 5th year for Mark.

With the addition of Teske, our roster will be top-heavy with bigs. Even if Beilein starts playing two bigs some of the time next year, there still won't be enough minutes to go around. Someone will leave, and right now I'd peg Donnal as the most likely.

I suspect this is part of a new athletic department policy that lists individuals by their academic standing rather than their eligibility class.

The same reason that Wilton Speight and Jabrill Peppers are listed as Sophomores--for whatever reason, they have dropped the "redshirt" designations from the rosters:

I have no idea why the change was made, but it has been changed in multiple sports.  Including, obviously, men's basketball.

In the 4th quarter of the Rutgers game, the announcers said that Shane Morris asked to redshirt at the start of the season. There have also been some rumors about him graduating early and playing two years at Grand Valley State.

if (and big if) he came in with a lot of APs it is not too hard to get to 120. Remember, athletes tend to be here all year so they pick up spring and sometimes even a summer term credit

Furthermore, qbs all over are preparing to graduate in three years to allow a grad transfer plus two. It is just a good strategy.

My only hope for Shane is that he gets a degree and then makes a decision that makes him happy long term, whatever that may be

it should be doable for most players (depending on major of course).  we were able to finish early at bc due to all the summer classes.  im guessing many of these guys have the option to take classes both summer sessions.  its certainly doable as long as theyre not messing around with meaningless courses

to Mark to let him know now that they don't anticipate him getting a 5th year.  That way he knows he needs to graduate in 4 years and if he wants to keep playing he can take a 5th year somewhere else.

This is why I've been saying Mo Wagner should play this year. The last few guys to redshirt at M (Blake McLimams, Max Bielfeldt, Jon Horford, now possibly Donnal) didn't play their 5th year here anyway.

that could contribute this year that won't be in the rotation. Beilein has said he wants to go 8 or 9 deep, just like always.

I'm guessing if Wagner plays, it won't be right away. He'll have to show in practice that he can play a meaningful role, much like LeVert as a freshman. Based on Beilein's comments on his rebounding and what I've seen, he's more ready to play the 4 than the 5 right now. I think Wilson will get most of his minutes at the 5.
