Mario Ojemudia to OLB?!?

Submitted by 93Grad on

In a recent Detnews article, they talk about Mario playing OLB for Michigan.  If true, that is a shock to me and it raises more questions about or DL recruiting.  If Mario goes to OLB that means we did not land any true WDE's this year and we are even more loaded at OLB.

Wormley, Godin and Strobel all seem to be SDE/ DT types.  Pharoh Brown was slated for WDE and maybe his desire to play TE helped the coaches decide to move on.  I suppose Mario can still end up at WDE after putting on weight, but I'm still wondering why the staff did not start recuriting other WDE's once Brown left?

I know, I know, trust the coaches, blah blah blah, but this one confuses me.

Can't source this for the life of me, but I read a pretty keen article by some HS football coach in Ohio (it was about defending the spread.)  He said the best advice he ever received as a coach was to base your defense around what your players do well, rather than the other way around.  I'm paraphrasing it badly, but there it is.  I expect that's what our coaches will do and have 97.5% confidence the proof will be in the product.  (If we figure out how to not flub covering the Poseys of the world on long pass plays, I'll tack on the extra 2.5% :) )

I honestly think the differences between the 4-3 and 3-4 that UM would run are not that different - and that's okay to me.  Based on current recruiting a 3-4 makes a bit more sense, but that fluidity will help to cover up some of the talent deficiencies UM currently has especially along the line.

Personnel difference b/n the 4-3 under and the 3-4 are overblown.  Think of the 4-3 under as the average of the 3-4 and 4-3 over with 3 lbs lined up off the line of scrimmage.  You can argue that some set of personnel is better for A than B but really, a college coach can't just dial up the perfect measurables for every position.

Here's hoping this meme dies, absent any statement from coaches.

I know, I know, trust the coaches, blah blah blah,

If you're already worried about where he will play seven months before fall practice of his freshman year, you don't trust the coaches. Maybe you need to hear something other than "blah, blah, blah" next time.
