Marcus Ray leaving WTKA
well, bye
I didn't like Marcus Ray but if his presence cuts down on how many times I have to hear Jamie Morris say "I mean", I'd rather Marcus just stay in the show.

Sorry Gramps
But I read your comment just fine. #ClevernessFail
One of your best posts.

start listening again. A Boxing Day Miracle!
liked his stories
his analysis, however...
...a poor man's Steven A. Smith.
Butch Jones is a better analyst than Marcus.
He's a Jackass
Marcus was pretty negative at a time when things had to be considered as on the rise. He can say what he wants to say but he seemed to have a personal problem with the current coaching staff. I stopped listening to the Mzone months ago because the act got old quick.
in a bad mood.
Mr. Dead Air. He will not be missed. It seemed like he never did any preparation and Jamie had to try to carry the show. I wonder whose decision it really was for him to leave.
You said it yourself. He was making free money on that show. No way he would leave on his own. The way Ray was trashing the staff this year, I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh finally got him blown out of there.
that annoyed me. The worst thing is every so often he would denigrate the value of getting a degree, basically saying athletes should take the money as soon as they could, and how a degree wasn't necessary to make a lot of money in the "real world". Although he may have been technically correct, it's a bad message to broadcast all the way around. Most ex-athletes can't or won't have any opportunities to work in broadcasting, coaching, or other sports-related field after their playing days are over. And even if they did, a degree certainly will help I would think.
Aside from that, Ray didn't exactly further his career opportunities in the broadcasting area (IMO) during his stint at WTKA. Most of the time, he sounded bored, unmotivated, unprepared, and not wanting to be there. I doubt any networks executives looking for talent would be very impressed if they listened to his tapes.
I wonder what Charles Woodson thinks about this. For those who don't know, Marcus played with Charles Woodson.
You don’t say!
I did not realize that. Marcus never mentioned it.
That Marcus still talks to Charles?
Ha, he says Charles is his best friend but I've never seen/heard Charles say it in return.
Probably because he would be a terrible best friend to have.
He was always too negative about the team. He seemed to forgot that his teams was average before the championship.
Marcus is so annoying that he sometimes makes me wish that the '97 team had lost a couple of games.
are you saying Marcus Ray and Charles Woodson played on the same team? Huh.. thats crazy!
Marcus is a guy I always wanted to like. He seems like a really good human being overall but he provides virtually zero useful information or substance. It's as if he tries too hard to have a dissenting opinion from the majority, especially when the majority opinion is a positive one. Then he acts like an asshole to anyone who argues with him.
I met him at a car dealership that he worked with. He was really cool. But he became unlistenable.
Hey, works for Mike Valenti, right?
#richardradio, #angrydudewithnegativityradiatingfromhisspores, #chiponshoulder, #sizematters
Pretty much wraps up sports journalism as a whole. Dissent for the sake of argument and/or clicks.
Careful now. That contrarian attitude is what pushed a Columbus kid to come play for Michigan!
Did he really say "relieve myself"?
I mean, I just relieved myself but it wasn’t from a radio show
He is not good and listening to him its like listening to a random fan spewing random crap. I have a hard time listening to him especially when he goes off tangent and talks about random shit. Nice guy but not a radio person.
Like listening to a fan spewing random crap, who then drops the "well I played here so my opinion automatically trumps your opinion" card whenever someone calls him out or argues with him.
Also seemed to overplay his relationship with Woodson
About that '97 team, like no other team did things like they did - like they didn't have the GOAT making Ray look good.
was starting QB, wasn't he, with GOAT Brady as backup?
Marcus was award winning safety in 97, can't take that away.
Interestingly Brady was the DL coach of that squad... CFB has changed in the intervening 20 years but these guys got what they got.
=
Woodson
I attended a um alumni event at UM flint during the coaching search (between thanksgiving and Christmas because we had already fired Hoke) and he said we should look for Nick Saban to be a name to come to Michigan. I knew then he was full of it.
Was he serious ?!
Yes. I can corroborate this. I heard him say this on the radio. He even said something like "everyone will think I'm crazy but I have heard from good sources that he'd take the job." Pretty much chatsports level credibility right there.
I swear he would zone out while on air. JMo would say something and there would be repeated silence. Was cringe worthy at times. Did not really show that he cared about the quality of the product IMO.
not really that good
May be understatement of the year...
He doesn't have to drag around M-Ray for several hours every day on-air and put up with his negativity. JMo isn't the best talk show host either, but at least he's positive much of the time and attempts to fill up the air with something of value.
He seemed to have checked out from the MZone some time ago. Always enjoyed him more on Rays of Light in the morning. His chemistry with Sam was markedly better.
...question is, who will be his replacement?
Jim Rome
Braylon Edwards
Too soon?
Finebaum.
a ham sandwich is available.
I like Jon Jansen on the broadcast. Also Ira is great with Sam but isn’t necessary for the morning show, I’d love a radio pro on the afternoons.
On the subject of Sam, whom I hear more that I'm listening to his podcast segments, I love his insider knowledge and his guests and his demeanor, but, man, Sam is a guy who...who....who, Sam is a guy who...needs to uh, needs to...needs to get to his point sometimes. I mean, there is measuring your words and all, but good God man you're on the radio! Spit it out!
Once he got that Mzone show, he became arrogant. He was a lot better when he was humble. You could tell when he started making actual money again. His entire demeanor changed.
next DB coach for Harbaugh
Marcus is extremely articulate, intelligent and when he wants to be, a charming on-air personality. Quite a few times this fall he hasn't wanted to be... he was openly disdainful of both Harbaugh and Don Brown, and I never understood why. It seemed somehow personal. He carried out his attacks into trolling territory with abandon, unafraid of saying things that flat out made no sense. Callers trying to curry favor with his moods, which changed regularly, were more painful to listen to than anything Marcus said. He did try to temper his criticisms with some perspective at times, perhaps as a reaction to some of these callers.
Towards the end of the season, I had the feeling someone at WTKA talked to him because he did a complete turnaround with Brother Love, who was not only more fun to listen to, the underlying satirical quality caught me off guard and I started laughing while in rush hour traffic.
I was actually looking forward to the 2018 season with Brother Love, so I hope he continues to call in for his Rays of Light segment on Sam's show.
He has some football insight, no doubt, but he comes off as being very arrogant. He seems really frustrated to me.
Jamie Morris is a much nicer guy and has an equal or better level insight of insight to offer.
Make no mistake, though, the players I've spoken to from the NC team are not JH fans -- he demeaned their degrees.
How can his overall good (AFAICS, anyway) reception from other former players be explained?
It's not like he said "All those guys from Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan got lousy degrees. Ours were much better."
Here's an idea: Winning a national championship tends -- in some people -- to encourage an inflated sense of (football) self-worth. It maybe leads to conclusions like "Mike DeBord would be a good head coach. He was on the staff of a national championship team."
The Mike Debord truthers astound me, but you see them every time his name pops up.
Between these accounts and what JUB says in his book, it seem some players from the '97 team have some issues.
If a former player coaching another team made a somewhat tepid (if stupid) remark about the agree programs usually associated with athletes bothers them that much that they hold a grudge years later, that says as much about them as Harbaugh. I thought Harbaugh was an asshole for saying it, but it astounds me that people like Toomer and Ray seem to hold real anger toward him for really minor slights.
His moods, my goodness. That embodied his largest problem: he couldn't let go of his ego. Indulging his moods on air was just the most overt expression, but that colored his entire program.
Brother Love started last week or the week before, not at the end of the football season.
I haven't listened to WTKA in over a year. My favorite segments were when Marcus was on with Sam. I had no idea he had gone downhill so fast in the last year. Maybe he is having some personal problems that carried over to his on air show. That tweet is worded like something of a "F U". I hope he gets it together.
Hope he gets the opp.
Situation is well described above. I found some of his stories insightful but I don't think I would be able to remember him if he wasn't the guy opposite Woodson on an undefeated team. I was about to write him a letter suggesting that he should pause and put a period on some of his statements. They used to run on like a fan with too many ideas.
And I'm sad for anyone that does. Sometimes, sports guys shouldn't have a platform.
Marcus Ray. His honest opinion was appreciated and his knowledge of breaking down defenses was unsurpassed. Go Luck 29.
Go Blue.
I agree, he was the polar opposite of Sam(everything is always positive!). Which was refreshing at times. I don’t need someone to tell me my team is great after they get blasted. He was always critical when the time called for it. And gave them praise when it was warranted.
"I've decided to get fired." - Marcus Ray
"I've decided to get fired." - Marcus Ray
I believe he always wanted a position on the coaching staff. As time went by and he didn't get any looks, I think he became more and more sour.
Listening to him just piss all over our program, our coaches and our players was just awful. He was the most negative sports commentator I've ever listened to
never found him that insightful, rarely listened to him.
On how great he was or relating every possible sports story to his days at Michigan.
Good riddance. The guy obviously had a chip on his shoulder because he didn't get tan assistant coaching job under Harbaugh after basically begging for it on WTKA.
Fisch calling a great game for UCLA right now.
Just looked up the stats:
UCLA 2016 S&P+ Offensive Rank (pre-Fisch): No. 82
UCLA 2017 S&P+ Offensive Rank (Fisch): No. 16
Obviously, Rosen's health also played a part, but that's a pretty remarkable change (even bigger than the improvement when Mattison and Hoke's staff came in and replaced Greg Robinson, et al.).
I always liked Jed. I've got KState in my bet pool, so I'm hoping they find their footing here.
Rick Flair , come on down
His Harbaugh hatred was too much for me. The Shea Patterson comments were way over the top. I enjoyed Rays of Light very much but he's been dark space for a very long time. I love Jamie though, I'll tune back in.
You can only keep things so real before you're no longer welcome. Even if youre Champion Alumni.
I wonder how many people on this thread throwing shade at Marcus have a framed, autographed picture of the "Take That" SI cover hanging somewhere in their home. It's sad how much this fanbase loves to turn its back on former players just because they've said something fans don't want to hear.
This is supposed to be a family. Family says and does stupid things at times. No reason to turn your back on them. I feel like Marcus did try to provide a different outlook and analysis most of the times. He did troll at times, but nothing out of hand. Sad that the fans drove one of their own to quit.
Well Put. We are all Michigan Family and should pull for each other, even if we disagree with their opinion or way of doing it. I enjoyed Marcus's story telling of the past. Some of his inputs were excellent. How he has reacted to the Michigan Mafia afterthey got after him was poor. I will miss some of his inputs, Go Blue
Well said.
Yet you are here complaining because you didnt like what others had to say about Ray? Hypocrite much?
People dont hate Ray the player they just didnt like his radio persona. He was not a good analyst period.
I wonder how many people on this thread understand that you can celebrate great memories of Michigan football and can at that same time disagree with those that created said memories. The idea that you have to agree with the ridiculous things that Marcus says to get a reacton in order to have this signed in your man cabe is ridiculous.
Who said you have to agree with him? I just don't think people have to go out of their way to bury the guy. My point is I bet most of the people wouldn't have the guts to say their criticisms to his face. A lot of what he's said in the past has been taken out of context. It is what it is. He's a Michigan man whether people like it or not.
Did you read what you wrote above? You literally write that people that have that photo hanging in their home and think Marcus is a blowhard have somehow turned on him.
Well when you’re an entertainer or on air personality you’ve got to be able to take it. Marcus could give it out but the first time anyone have any back he shut stuff down immediately and acted like a baby. And because I don’t agree with him trashing a guy that’s had a top 5 defense for half a decade because he has to busts a game doesn’t mean I have to say something to his face. What are you 12?
Who’s going out of their way?
I see the MLivers have shown up.
In my opinion Marcus Ray made the M Zone the most entertaining segment of all of WTKA. I love Sam Webb and the recruiting roundup but Marcus always made me laugh. Sure his analysis wasn’t always rainbows and butterflies but damn he’s funny and he has some great stories (like how they trolled Peyton Manning on their official visit together). I for one will miss Marcus. I like Jaime Morris as a person but without Marcus there’s no way in hell I’ll be listening to the M Zone anymore.
Hey Marcus.
His schtick of being a Michigan contrarian on the Michigan home radio station was not a very bright strategy. He was almost as annoying as Valenti. Glad to see he's moving on. Despite my dislike for his radio persona I do wish him the best of luck in the future.
But where will I get insightful analysis with such comments as, “You can’t make the club, if you in da tub”?
I generally felt I could learn from him when he focused on that.
Unfortunately his on-air personality and demeanor was so sullen and disinterested when the focus wasn't directly on him that he was unlistenable. Even Sam got after him on-air one morning after a particularly petulant rant. I completely stopped listening to the M-Zone months ago because it was simply not worth waiting for the valuable stuff. I think he's got things to contribute, but he has to get over himself first.
Sam prob told the big ups “done with ray. Time to go “ Then ray said he is leaving before they could say “you done”
I listened to his podcasts a few times on The Wolverine. He was awful. Whether he was butchering metaphors or idioms, or the English language, or claiming he predicted ahead of time what transpired in the game, I quickly found him unbearable.
On the other hand, if you haven’t listened to Doug Skene’s podcasts or “In The Trenches”, you’re missing out. He’s excellent and should be on TV. He would immediately be in the top 2-3 analysts in football, IMO.
Mediocre analyst at best. I don't get why those two things can't be true to some of you.
I'll double down and say that as much as I loved Terry Mills as a player, he has got to be one of the worst color commentators on the radio. Just terrible. Incoherant half the time and he thinks he's on TV with his descriptions - as if we are all watching it with him. It doesn't mean I appreciate his days on the court any less. Get a grip people.
Better than Huge
Hopefully his depression doesn't come back and cause him to keep eating his way to diabeetus.
Most of the guys were in their early to mid-30's when Harbaugh spouted off.
I agree with them. JH was no rocket scientist while at UM -- his meme that "I was told not to major in history" is BS (he was dyslexic and would have failed).
I liked when he talked schemes and such but he is very, very arrogant and thinks he is the smartest defensive mind in the world. He continuously said over the last few months he could go toe to toe with any defensive coaches and teach them a thing or two. Surprisingly, he’s not even a coach at the HS level anymore.
See ya
When he was at CMU coaching for Butch Jones, he took many HS coaches out to the coaches social at summer football camp. Let's just say he wasn't behaving and was an embarrassment to CMU.
He's also terrible on the BTN but the BTN in my opinion is terrible as well.
Good luck to him.
I think expecting him to jump from an hour segment once a week to 4 hours of co-hosting 5 days a week was a miscalculation. Enjoyed his stories, the one about the Northwestern running back coach who recruited him was pretty funny, think he's much more suited to a Rays of Light segment.
The awkward silences recently were very cringe inducing, I wonder if Jamie got tired of carrying the show all of the time. I remember mark from lansing calling and essentially easking them if they were high, neither really gave much of a response.
Guess this means we get more of Rick Leach's son Matt. Sigh. Guest says something,Matt says pretty much the exact same thing in a slightly different way, repeat. Someone needs to tell him he can just say, "Yeah, I agree," every once in a whle.
Great player, horrible analysts who seemed to have a closet hate for anything Michigan that wasn't the 1997 team. Also sometimes his scheme analsys was wrong, and felt he knew everything when it came to defense and always knew what was going to happen after it happen.
Marcus also seemed to have a clear preference for the guys from The Wolverine (John Borton, Chris Balas, etc.). I’m guessing because they clearly kiss his ass where the WTKA callers seem to question his critism. Crazy, fans of a team might be critical of the guy who criticized said team? Unfortunately, Marcus’ “keep it real” approach only included saying nice things about Ohio State and not Michigan. Sad!
Since that's all he talks about anyway. Did you guys know he's from Columbus? And knows the neighborhoods too?
Good player, hard to listen to on the air. It shouldn't be hard to find someone better.
Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out ....now i can listen to Sam more without you there
Am I the only one annoyed by Ira? If Sam is off, I can’t even listen.
You are the only one
Good luck to him.
Great player, but I really have gotten tired of his analysis due to his overwhelmingly disinterested attitude on Michigan Insider.
