March Madness First Round to be called the First Round again

Submitted by Fifth-Stringer on

Saw this on ESPN - after several years of deluding themselves into believing that the play-in games were an actual round and everyone would be alright with calling the first round of 64 "the second round" and the round of 32 "the third round", the NCAA has finally voted to "return to sanity" as the article puts it. Nice to see the NCAA submitting to logic and public opinion on how dumb their decision was, even on something as small and meaningless as this.

Sanity:  Brought to you by the people that renamed Big Ten "Leaders" and "Legends" to Big Ten "East" and "West" like they should have been in the first place.

This will be much better and makes far more sense than how it was marketed before as the "Round of 64...well, not quite that many, but given the mechanics of a single-elimination tournament with play-in games, you get the idea, and as for the Round of 32, well, you'll have the Sweet Sixteen next week anyway..."

I refused to go by the NCAA terminology and stuck with the "Play-in Round" and the "First Round".

It'll be nice to avoid having to do that stupid translation again.

who had pushed for the re-naming of the rounds (the 1st Round becoming the 2nd Round), and the NCAA basically gave in to their wishes.

Reason being was that many coaches had incentive clauses in their contracts that said stuff like "reach the second round of the NCAA, get a bonus of $75K."

Well, what better way to get that bonus than to move the goalposts!  The American way!
