List of the new freshman numbers revealed along with the ones already known to refresh the memory. The number changes with Drake and Dennis make more sense now-
Many more freshman jersey #s revealed
This makes me feel like the season is so close, but yet so far away. Sigh.
It's not that far. Only sixty-eight days for M football. It will be here before you know it.
Deveon #4, Douglass #29, Dawson #55, Derrick Green #27 and Shane #7.
But I've never liked defensive lineman wearing skill numbers (taco #33 and poggi #7).
Henry Poggi has switched positions, and will be providing depth at safety this season. Team player, that guy.
Makes the number look tiny on their monstrous torsos. Recall Crables number 2. I remember SCar had a DT, Ingram maybe, and the number (5 perhaps) looked stretched beyond belief. Don't know why I fancy it, but I do. Same with WRs in the 1-19 range
Back in the old old days you had guys on the OL wearing single digits and QBs like Forest Evashevski with wacky numbers (69).
Yeah #7 on the D line is going to look really odd. Also at 55, Dawson is going to look like a center.
What does "pwo" mean?
I knew I'd be like "duh".
Preferred walk on
Preferred walk on
what the hell. "Preferred Walk On." Everybody else was doing it....
I feel like Shane Morris after Henne as 7 is going to cement that number as the number you wear if you are a badass Michigan quarterback.
By this time next year, we'll be reading about Poggi's change of number.
(I can see into the future).
It's interesting to consider that with the advent of the "legends number" program, some of these numbers could be purely temporary.
For instance, the coaches know they will award #11 to Quinton Washington near the beginning of the year. Poggi wants #76, but obviously can't have it until its vacated. For whatever reason, they stick him at #7 in the mean time. (All hypothetical, but you get the point.)
I can't think of one RB with the #27 in the HOF. That's a very uncommon number choice, but it's cool if he can make it famous.
I can think of a lot of great backs in the #32 and #34.
Edward George wore #27....
So formal... if you're going to call him Edward, at least use his full name Edward Nathan George, Jr.
I get the sense with these players the number they wear is secondary to being on the team and wearing the maize and blue. They'd be happy and proud to wear any number.
Do some numbers have greater historic meaning than others? Sure. And to wear those numbers is no doubt an extra measure of pride. But most meaningful is be a Wolverine and strap on the winged helmet.
I love what Hoke has done to shape the spirit of this team. Love it.
(All that said, my very favorite number is #41 -- Rob Lytle's number.)
...Is that the sense you get?
Loved Rob Lytle. He was my school-girl crush back then. Right when I started really getting into M Football.
DeVeon has always run hard behind that #4..Keep it up kid..Him and DGreen could make some opposing LBers quit
They'd be absolutely lethal in a single wing.
From the front I won't be able to tell if it's him or Shane :-(
Hopefully he brings the "rage" back to the number 4. I loved watching Brandon Minor run.
I was playing the demo NCAA 14 this past weekend and while you can't change your depth chart you can still cycle in players. Rawls is our starting RB in the game. I tried to get Green but couldn't. But it had an RB that is #3. Who is that?
The game is always wayyyy off with freshman #s, so I would assume it's Derrick Green.
It's derrick green if you run a play with him and check the stats it says freshman from VA I must say he is pretty beastly on the game
wait how do you cycle in players? /still waiting for my media copy EA.
You can change the players by hitting circle I believe when you are looking at your formation, before you choose it.
just checked. Its the Right stick
That makes no sense to me.
I always wondered how this works. I have to assume senior players get to choose whether to keep/change their number first. But do scholarship players get priorirty over walk-ons? If a Devin Gardner for whatever reason wants Brian Cleary's (walk-on QB) this year, would Cleary have to give it up? Just curious. I know in the NFL, it's generally if you want my number you have to pay/trade me something for it.
Yeah, scholarship players get to choose their numbers. Walk-ons get the leftovers.
I always thought numbers were assigned by the coaches. How else do you explain J.T. Floyd getting #1 in 2008? Or Devin Gardner making the switch from #7 to #12? Or all those other stories where a player says he walked into the coach's office and the coach said "You're wearing this number"?
Interesting. I wonder why James Ross didn't choose #6 as a freshman then. It was available, and that was the number he had in HS.
There are also stories like Wyatt Shallman wearing #33 for a teammate who passed away, Henry Poggi wearing #7 despite being a defensive tackle, etc. I don't know the particulars of how Floyd got the #1 jersey, except maybe he said he didn't care what number he got and Rodriguez's staff didn't know any better.
Fair point, good sir.
Taco Charlton as #33 is just too damn cool.
Cinco de Mayo Taco Charlton
That's reserved for whoever is bestowed the Tate Forcier Legends jersey.
"Tate Forcer: Michigan Legend"?
I can see it.
That is one badass lookin' QB.
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T CATCH COLD, TATE! It's only summer!
...for Cinco de Quatro.
I guess Shallman is staying on offense. Taco and him have the same number.
First thing I noticed too. Not only is WS staying on O, but two big strong young athletes now can't play special teams together. Seems a little odd (the second issue, not so much the first).
Who knows? Maybe it's a sign that one or the other is going to redshirt. Maybe Charlton is waiting for a senior to graduate so he can take his number, using #33 in the meantime until Jibreel Black's #55 is available. If the coaches want both of them on the field on special teams, the kids will change numbers.
I doubt Taco changes his number. He was #33 in high school as well.
Not at Notre Dame they wouldn't
.....It felt really good to say that.
That was in reference to the fact that they had two players with #2 on the field during the missed (potentially winning) field goal in OT. I believe it happened twice last year and neither time were they flagged for it.
But you're right, we are not Notre Dame, this is Michigan, fergodsakes.
I'm ready for a bad ass running back to wear #6 again.
a defensive end in a couple years. #Legacy
At this point in time, the coaches are recruiting him for TE.
Which I'm in favor of, if for no other reason that I want the ball in Wheatley's hands, and Wheatleys are pretty good at scoring TDs.
I always liked the Chris Howard #8 too.
For the OP, Scott Sypniewski will wear #43 and Garrett Moores will wear #15.
Per the TTB comments, Reon Dawson is 20 and Stribling is 8. I guess Stribling really is a taller Floyd?
Poggi wearing #7? I guess he is trying to channel his inner Jadaveon Clowney. All he needs is some dreads, darker skin, and to talk like a hood rat.
