Manti Te'o suffers personal tragedy, will probably still play v. State

According to Mark at Tremendous and the ND message boards, Manti Te'o lost his girlfriend to cancer, and may have also lost his grandmother within the same 24 house. He may miss Saturday's game, but that isn't the first thing on his mind right now.

I'm hearing some rumors that Manti Te'o isn't going to play Saturday. Would be a big blow to ND's chances if he's out.

— Mark (@Mgobluegr) September 13, 2012

To clarify, Manti Te'o's girlfriend passed away yesterday (confirmed) but rumors are saying his grandmother passed away as well (unrelated)

— Mark (@Mgobluegr) September 13, 2012

I'm sure you all join me in sending our sympathies to Manti, his family, and his girlfriend's family.

ED: Looks like Te'o will play. May he find healing in the smacking of many Spartans.

Brian Hamilton Brian Hamilton ‏@ChiTribHamilton

RT @NDatRivals: Brian Kelly says that Manti Te'o will play this week despite personal losses.

(H/T julesh for the update)

Yeah, I'm all for Teo missing games, but not for something like this.  I can't imagine losing two people that close to you at once.

I lost my mother to cancer

I lost my mother to cancer and went through the hell of a funeral only to have her father pass away the morning after we put her to rest. It was not easy and derailed my head for a couple years. My thoughts are certainly with Manti.

Prayers go out to him right

Prayers go out to him right now. I cannot even fathom losing two loved ones (especially someone so young) in such a short period of time.

Cancer is such an awful disease. I know first hand cause I have it too.

Thanks guys. In remission

Thanks guys. In remission right now so technically im a "cancer survivor". But I have to go every 6 months for a battery of tests to make sure it stays that way.

I don't like hearing news like this cause it makes think about what could happen if it doesn't.

cancer's the kind of thing

cancer's the kind of thing you have to be constantly vigilant about, even after you beat it.  which kinda sucks, but it works for a lot of people!  you got this, Grow.

Well, if he doesn't play it

Well, if he doesn't play it might not just be a willingness to play thing as him being out of town for a funeral, or with family.

Teo is from Hawaii, and although I don't know where his gf or grandma live, it's possible either or both of them are out of town.  So if he took right off to be with family and attend a funeral, he might not be around for the game, or prepared.

What an amazing young man.

Seriously.  I have worked in oncology for over 8 years as a healthcare practitioner.  I have seen more than a few cases where someone is diagnosed with cancer and the spouse leaves them because they can't handle going through the process.

Te'o obviously could have left at any time and focused more on football, having fun, school, whatever.  It speaks volumes of his character that he supported her through the process.

I hope whenever it is that he returns, he has a career day as he will most certainly be playing in honor of those two women.

High Character

I know this is lower on the importance scale but in an era of big time college football, and the stereotypes that come along with it.  I for one am impressed in a kid who obviously stuck with a girlfriend who had cancer.  This couldn't have been easy for him with the pressures of being "the athelete" on campus and I'm sure many of young females trying to get his attention.

Did not know that.

Did not know that.  Interesting, in that he attends, well a Catholic school.  Anyway, moot point.

Definitely feel for the guy.  I'm sure he'll be playing for a lot more than just school pride (etc.) the rest of this year (and even further into his career, for that matter).

Theodore Roosevelt lost his wife and mother on Valentine’s Day.

In his journal he wrote "The light has gone out of my life." and put a X in the rest of the space for that day.

My sympathies to Manti Te'o and the affected families.

Seriously.  I got dumped by my longtime girlfriend at about his age and I thought the world was going to end (it didn't).  I can't imagine how I would have been if she died.

Very Sad News

My condolences and thoughts to Manti Te'o, his family and his girlfriend's family.

I cannot imagine losing two people I love dearly in the space of a day.

Love that kid; thoughts & prayers with him and the families.

May the Lord bless and keep him strong.  Be even more thankful than normal that you are NOT a Spartan football player today.

Damn, poor guy.This means

Damn, poor guy. Good news that he's able to play.

This means Spartys fledgling new offense will be facing exactly 2 other returning starters from the ND defense they played last year: OLB Prince Shembo, and SS Jamoris Slaughter (my vote for coolest sports name ever, just saying) But 5 of the other starters were playing in the 2 deep last year so it isn't so bad. Interesting to see how Sparty passes against NDs depleted backfield, and how well Bell rushes against their front 7 after they faced Navy's option and shut down Purdues modest running game. Also interesting to see which qb(s) ND will play.

I literally have no idea how either team will play this Saturday as both had close, ugly wins against similar opponents, and both had blowout wins over inferior opponents, but I'm betting ND can limit Spartys offense enough to win.

Sad news indeed. I wish he and his family the best through tough times.

This puts football watching into perspective.

I do agree with his decision/want to play, I just think that he will not be very effective and this will frustrate him. ND loses this game.

Man, hurts my heart to hear

Man, hurts my heart to hear this news.. No one should have to go through that..  I am about the same age as Teo (a year older I think) and I can't imagine how I would feel to lose my long term girlfriend, let alone my grandmother also in such a short span of time...  As others have stated, I salute Teo for staying with his girlfriend through what had to be an incredibly hard and heart breaking process.  Many married couples are not willing to do what Teo did, that says a lot about him as a man and about their relationship.  Anyways, Teo, his family, and his girlfirend's family are in my thoughts...  Good luck to him this weekend.
