Man on the Moon

Submitted by winged helmet on
How many schools can say they have a flag on the moon? I only know of one - MICHIGAN - from the all-Michigan Apollo 15 mission! I propose that "Man on the Moon" by R.E.M. would a great song to be piped in during a long time out. It's no "rawk" song, but I still think it could really pump up the crowd. "If you believed they put a man on the moon, man on the moon..." Thoughts? EDIT: 1. Is there a flag? I don't know. Nor does the daily. Quoting a friend: "Is the Daily right? Is there no Michigan flag on the moon, as it claims in Debunking the moon myth (03/29/2006)? Maybe, but it is also responsible for spreading the story about the flag. Most recently in an article titled The right stuff (02/14/2006) the Daily states the Michigan flag was famously planted by the Apollo 15 crew. Again, in University Alumni Association courts larger classes, (10/22/1998) it is mentioned that there is a Michigan flag on the moon. The Daily follows this article with another article in the Friday Focus section (11/20/1998) that says the rumor about the Michigan flag on the moon "cannot be confirmed." It seems like the Daily cannot make up its mind whether there is a Michigan flag on the moon. It has flip-flopped its view on multiple occasions, each time within a two-month period. Regardless of whether we have a flag on the moon, I would not leave it up to the Daily to inform me of such information. Clearly, the integrity of the Daily's reporting is not up to par. It was not even capable of accurately quoting me in Wednesday's article. Due to lack of evidence, this myth is plausible." 2. As a current UM student, I can verify that most students - the ones that aren't stuck under rocks - know about the Apollo 15 mission.

Song is good, but not a football song. I'd like to see more AC/DC. I'm trying to think of what else would sound good, but nothing comes directly to mind.

Plus i'm pretty sure the "flag on the moon" is just a myth. I believe we have a charter plaque for the Alumni Association on there but not a flag. Also, while I don't mind the song it will not pump people up if that's your objective

It may precede MTV, but the "M Flag on the Moon" myth really got going (at least around Ann Arbor) in the mid-80s, about the time MTV's title sequence showed an astronaut planting an MTV flag. The "M" looked like our familiar Block M, and was centered in the middle of the flag. "TV" was drawn to the lower right of the M. Many students knew about the Apollo 15 crew, (after having been dutifully told of it by their orientation leaders) and put it together. Thus, an (urban) legend was born.

I propose that Minor Rage gets its theme. Anyone know the Wilco/Billy Bragg album of unrecorded Woody Guthrie songs? There's a great song that goes: "Way over yonder in the Minor key, there ain't nobody that can sing like me." Or: There's a Bonnie Prince Billy song called "A Minor Place". "Well I've been to a Minor place, and I can say I like it's face. If I am gone and with no trace I will be in my Minor place." It's no Benatar, to be sure.

reaction to "Minor Key" would be something along the lines of WTF? Don't get me wrong. That first Wilco/Bragg record is still somewhere around my house, but a folksy Brit singing Guthrie protest song strikes me as bit off as a sonic representation of Minor Rage. I however have a few Kenny Chesney and Dave Mathews Band selections I shall soon nominate ...

Yes, both great songs. I like your taste in music, but no, not gonna happen. Kind of like when i got elected social chair of my frat on the "good beer, good music" ticket. Sorority girls could dance to the JB's and Stevie, but got bored and kept requesting Brown Eyed Girl and whatever overplayed junk was on the radio those days. It'll have to be the music of the masses for the crowd (and players) to get into it.

I concur with other recommendations that we use uniquely Michigan music - Bob Seger and Ted Nugent are obvious nominees. If we have to have RAWK music, I hate for it to be the same damn AC/DC, Metallica, Journey stuff they play at every hockey arena and low-rent basketball game.

had a pretty good idea... whenever our opponents fail at a big pass, we could play the chorus for "It Takes Two" But if we are gonna play dance music, there is none who surpass Daler Mendhi:

You may not believe the Daily (and I don't blame you), but this is a link to the website of one of the astronauts on that flight. If you scroll to the very bottom of the page it confirms the fact that there is no UM flag on the moon, only the Alumni Association charter plaque. While it would be awesome to have a flag on the moon, we do not. http://www.alworden.com/apollo_xv.htm

I used to coach basketball at a small college in Kentucky and one of the schools in our conference would play real cheesy soap opera music when they announced our starting line-up. I was only at the school one year and it was the first year the other school was in the league. When they started playing the soap opera tune everyone started looking around with WTF plastered all over their face. If nothing else, it got us unfocused for the time being.
