Malzahn
I am actively rooting for a Rodriguez return in 2011. However, being a realistic fella, I understand that this mightn't happen (/"duh").
Aside from the inevitable media-driven-Harbaugh!-ness of the weeks immediately post-Rodriguez, how does the Mgocommunity feel about Malzahn? Watching Auburn play and watching multiple camera shots of the sideline, one gets the inclination that Malzahn is running that show. To be sure, he will be a hot commodity either this season or next, and I imagine he'll sooner stick with Newton than abandon Auburn for anything other than a head coaching gig.
Odds are he'd do as well at keeping Denard in Maize and Blue as anyone (other than Rodriguez); so, how do you feel about Brandon--hypothetically--giving him a good, long look?
December 4th, 2010 at 6:15 PM ^
Rich Rod or Harbaugh. That is all.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:19 PM ^
You need at least 3 options for any decision, let alone one like this.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:20 PM ^
Not when we already have Rich Rod and he is fully committed to UM. I'd be much happier keeping Rich Rod than doing a full blown coaching search.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:24 PM ^
I'm not even sure the best way for Brandon to go, but even if he really wants Harbaugh, Rich should at least be plan B. I can't see another coach out there that would be a better risk than Rich Year 4, except MAYBE Harbaugh.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
I think Rich is doing just fine. But if there is a decision to be made I don't get why we can't look at more than just Harbaugh, how do we even know that he is the best available?
December 4th, 2010 at 6:27 PM ^
List other realistic possibilities.
Go!
December 4th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
Decide next year.
Why we'd throw away the option that is the potential to be really good that RichRod brings for this year's "up-and-comer" is beyond me. If there's an obvious concrete candiate like Harbaugh that we may only get one shot at, that I can understand. I can't understand pulling the trigger for something (or it's equivalent) that will be available next year.
Heck, if you were that other incoming coach, all things being equal, wouldn't you want to walk into a situation with the defensive cupboard stocked a little better with 2011 recruits so that your clock starts ticking in 2012?
December 4th, 2010 at 8:15 PM ^
If Brandon were considering anyone other than Harbaugh, he'd have fired Rodriguez already. Plan A is Harbaugh; if he says no, RR is back (perhaps even with an extension).
December 4th, 2010 at 9:58 PM ^
We're apparently considering Brady Hoke pretty seriously, unfortunately, according to pay sites.
December 4th, 2010 at 10:58 PM ^
That could be a smokescreen.
December 4th, 2010 at 11:04 PM ^
Is still plan A
Bringing in Harbaugh doesn't guarantee anything in terms of success. Plus Harbaugh will not say no, he has already made it clear through the Wolverine alumni network that he wants the job.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:39 PM ^
I will stick with the GODfather of the Spread, thank you very much.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
a program like UM needs to land a big time coach.. one who's already made a name for himself, sure malzahn is somewhat football-minded, but i don't think he'd get the job over harbaugh

Fielding Yost?
December 4th, 2010 at 6:34 PM ^
Newton is only 27 feet tall. He looks taller on TV.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:41 PM ^
He sounds taller on tv when Danielson is verbally fellating him every chance he gets. I just wonder when Gary will come up for air.

sorry for asking the dumbest question in the world, but who is TacoPants??
I see his name all the time here, and I can never figure out who it is :'(
December 4th, 2010 at 6:51 PM ^
But he's the 10 foot tall invisible receiver that Michigan quarterbacks keep throwing to over the heads of everyone else.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:52 PM ^
The 17 foot tall wide receiver Navarre, and occasionally Henne, enjoyed throwing to. He's been on scholarship for about 10 years.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:57 PM ^
As to the thinking behind the coining of "TacoPants", I'm guessing that it's because whenever we throw to him, our visible receivers get their pants crushed. Just my speculation.

Made of dreams and has infinite eligibility
December 4th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
I don't know about anybody else, but I wouldn't feel too comfortable hiring anybody from Auburn anytime soon until a full investigation is complete, clearing the coaches. But maybe that's just my knee-jerk reaction to the pay-for-play situation.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:18 PM ^
Although I agree that Denard would be more likely to stick around if Malzahn were hired, I would have several issues with hiring him. First, he's never been a college head coach. I would much rather have somebody with a proven track record. Secondly, he's a very offensive-minded coach. There is nothing to suggest that he could fix the biggest problems with the current Michigan team, which are on the defensive side of the ball.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:26 PM ^
Not a bad coordinator, but just didn't have it when it came to being captain of the whole ship.
I don't know that much about Malzahn, but you better be sure you're getting someone who can handle the periphial issues when you hire/promote a coordinator to head coach.
December 4th, 2010 at 8:39 PM ^
Bobby Williams wasn't even a coordinator. He was MSU's RB coach.

job Comrade.

How about this Nebraska-Oklahoma game?
December 5th, 2010 at 12:30 AM ^
I thought Nebraska was going to stomp them into Bolivia, but they fizzled out. Although as Martinez ages, he will be scary for Big Ten defenses.

after Rich Rod retires with multiple Michigan Naitonal Championships!
December 4th, 2010 at 6:24 PM ^
Mike Hart was going to get that job, after interning and asst-coaching for several years under RichRod, when the latter retires. Wasn't that already posted somewhere?
December 4th, 2010 at 6:19 PM ^
That's a high risk/high reward guy. I think he is 5 years removed from HS coaching. He may be great, but I think he needs at least a couple of more years.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:20 PM ^
December 4th, 2010 at 6:26 PM ^
He would be my first choice after Coach Rod. I think if DB doesn't retain Coach Rod. Then Mullen and if not Mullen, have Gary Moeller has head coach and Malzahn as OC and coach in waiting. Have Gary tutor him about being head coach and a Michigan Man.
These are my second and third options. There is only one option I care about right now.

December 4th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
If we get a head coach, we should be able to get someone who has been a successful head coach. There is more to coaching than offensive play calling.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
Spread-N-Shred or Ground-N-Pound or we just let our current coach see his first full year of recruits turn into upper classmen next year ... This whole thing has grown tiresome.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:22 PM ^
...but I'll start a thread to discuss Malzahn.
I'm sure RichRod would thank you for your support.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:22 PM ^
Malzhan is an offensive coordinator who has never coached at the college level. Michigan already has an offensive coordinator struggling to make it as a head coach at the highest level. Why would they ever consider hiring another one?
